- Chapter 14 - The Social Misfit Among Society
The Social Misfit Among Society
“I see, so young lord…you’re saying that, no matter how hard you struggle, no matter how much you sacrifice, you will never show your true self to the public?”
For some reason, Enrique asked with a solemn expression on his face.
It is now in the middle of the night.
The moonlight is shining into the mansion.
“Are you really sure about this? Stopping the mayor’s plan, protecting people from the thieves’ attacks. If everyone knew it is the legitimate son of the Randall Ducal family who did all that, they’d praise you. You will have a bright future ahead of you.”
I shake my head.
I’m not doing all this for that, Enrique.
“I don’t need fame.”
“Then, why are you doing all this!?”
Enrique asked with an almost desperate tone.
I firmly explain,
“I’ve told you before, right? This is my duty. I just want to save their lives. That’s why, I don’t mind if no one ever knows about me.”
That’s right, if I do my best here, I’ll be able to live a peaceful mob life without tragically getting killed in the end.
In other words, I’m just saving my own life.
“Are you sure about this?”
Enrique looks at me intently.
I smile warmly in response.
“Of course, it’s my sincere wish.”
“I see…”
Enrique sighs.
“Young lord…”
After a short pause, Enrique begins speaking.
“Ever since I was in the guild, I’ve always refused requests that I don’t like. Requests from disgusting nobles, merchants who look down on adventurers. No matter how much the guild receptionist pleaded with me, I just wouldn’t take them.”
“…y-yeah.”
Enrique suddenly confessed so with a serious expression on his face.
He really did that?
I can’t help but to be taken aback.
I don’t particularly know much about the guild myself, but I’m sure that only the most powerful adventurers in the guild would have the privilege to turn down such requests.
To put it into comparison, it’s somewhat like someone choosing their jobs even though they don’t have one, or someone with poor exam results who still doesn’t to their homework, I suppose.
Enrique is a typical F-rank adventurer who likes to show off his strength.
If he refused the requests like that…
“Then before I knew it, I was expelled from the guild.”
“I guessed so.”
Well of course you’d be expelled.
If you act like that even though you’re just an F-rank adventurer, it’s only natural for you to get expelled.
“T-Then, what about the reactions of the other adventurers…?”
“The other adventurers? Ah, those guys, each and every one of them just looked away when they see me.”
“…uwaaa.”
“Hahaha, what’s with that reaction? It’s been a while since I met someone who didn’t feel intimidated by me.”
What an awkward conversation this is…
Enrique continues cheerfully, seemingly oblivious to my reaction.
“For the first time, I’m doing this not because I’m asked by someone, but because I want to stand by your side, young lord.”
Enrique says so as he extends his hand.
“E-Enrique…”
“From now on, let’s work together, young lord.”
Enrique says so, laughing.
“What do you say, Genesis?”
With ferocious smile and glaring eyes, Enrique asked so.
“Y-Yeah.”
I reluctantly shake his hand.
For now, it seems like Enrique is motivated.
He’s not a bad guy, I guess…
I don’t exactly fit well in the society myself, and my partner is a man who has been expelled from the adventurer’s guild…
Is this what people call ‘the gathering of the social misfits’?
After this event is over, perhaps I should teach him some basic etiquettes and common sense.
“However, Genesis, huh? This is the first time I’ve heard that name, but it’s such a nice name that somehow sticks in my heart…”
“I-I see. I’m glad you think so. I put a lot of thought into it…”
It’s just a name from my cringeworthy past that I probably won’t ever use again
However, it seems like Chuunibyous like it.
The town of Lyon is quite big.
When we leave the mansion, we flag down a carriage, saying we have an urgent situation.
Fortunately, there was a conference for nobles today, so the carriages are still running late.
After riding the carriage for a while, we finally arrive at the town’s checkpoint.
The village under attack is located in the direction of the mountains, so it’s faster to run than riding a carriage there.
We don’t have much time, so I increase my speed by enhancing my physique using magic.
While running to the village, Enrique asks me a question.
“So, I should head to that village, Haven, right? Then I’ll save the villagers from thieves’ attack.”
“That’s right.”
Enrique scratches his head.
Well, it’s natural for him to act like that, he’s not exactly used to helping people after all.
“So, Genesis, what will you do?”
“I have another matter to take care of, so I’ll take a detour and head over there once I’m done.”
“Another matter?”
Enrique furrows his brow, wondering what it is.
“Yeah—to see the face of the future hero.”
