Chapter 30: Settling the Past and New Enemy

Few days had passed since then. There wasn’t any drastic change in our daily life. Rie was still going to that prestigious high school like normal. I still had to take care of her, working part-time and live streamed my hunting session.

However, my burden had definitely decreased significantly thanks to the Tsutsuji family. Yuri-nee and Nana didn’t do as many streaming activities as before. It seemed they had already gotten tired of live streaming. And so, whenever they had free time, they would come over to my place and hang out with Rie. 

The three of them looked like the picturesque close sisters. My cheeks would loosen into a smile whenever I saw them like this.

“Oh, here it is. Wow, what a huge amount of money…”

My eyes widened in surprise when I checked my balance on the banking app. My money had reached 8 digits. 

It doesn’t feel real but… This is my reality now. 

Rie was still in school and I didn’t have any plans for today. However, I remembered one very important thing.

I immediately headed to the bank and transferred the money I had borrowed along with the interest to Takasago-san’s account. Then, I stopped by a shop to buy a gift before heading straight to Takasago Coffee.

“Oh? Yusuke-kun?”

Takasago-san, a handsome middle-aged man, greeted me. The surprise was evident in his face. 

“Ah! Yusuke! Ugh…..”

Takasago-san’s niece, Arisa-nee, also greeted me upon seeing me but then, as if she was reminded of something, she suddenly became frightened and hid behind Takasago-san’s back instead. 

What’s going on with her?

I placed the cake I had bought as a gift on the table and bowed my head to Takasago-san.

“Thank you very much for lending me the money! I’ve transferred the money, including the interest, to Takasago-san’s account!”

Takasago-san remained silent for a moment before he spoke again. 

“I see. Then, as of today, you’re fired.”

“Huh?”

Surprised to hear that, I tilted my head to the side. 

“You don’t need to work part-time here anymore. Not when you can only earn 1300 yen per hour. Yusuke-kun, you can earn so much more without working here now.”

His cold tone made me feel dejected.

That being said, he’s right. Realistically speaking, there’s a stark difference from the amount of money I can earn from streaming and from doing a part-time job at the cafe. “Even if you don’t work here anymore, you can still come over anytime you like, you know? That is, if you have a free time to do so.”

“Tha-That’s true….”

“Huh? What? Are you planning to part ways from us permanently just because you’ve become famous?”

He nudged my side while teasing me with a huge grin on his face. 

“N-No! I will still come over and hang out with you guys! I will come often!”

“Also, if it’s alright with you~ It’d be nice if you can help promote the cafe for us. I want to make Takasago Coffee a global coffee place. I want everyone in the whole world to know about my coffee!”

“Ahaha! Sure, sure. I will.”

As expected from the former department head of a major trading company. His entrepreneurial spirit is always burning with passion. 

I talked with Takasago-san for a while before I left his place. 

Then, I headed straight to a certain place. 

The supermarket that I had stolen from. I used to steal from this supermarket so I could feed Rie. 

I made my way to the back office of the supermarket. 

“Oh, if it isn’t Yusuke.”

“…..Nishimura-san.”

“Hahaha, or should I call you Legendary Fist-sama instead?”

“No, just Yusuke is fine.”

I laughed along and then, Manager Nishimura led me to their reception room. 

I handed Manager Nishimura an envelope with money in it. 

“Oh? What is this?”

“Payment for the lunch boxes and groceries I stole. Please, take it.”

The manager stared at the envelope for a moment before he returned his attention to me.

“I can’t accept it.”

“Why not?”

“Because, there’s something I want you to do, Yusuke.”

“Something you want me to do….”

The manager had a calm, serene expression on his face, as typical of someone who had long years of experience in life. 

“Yusuke, you will meet a lot of people in the future. Some might be courteous while some might not be as fortunate. Those kinds of people might seem selfish to some.”

“Yes….”

“But you see, everyone has their own problems and circumstances.”

“….”

“So, if someone like the old you were to appear before you, I want you to not jump to conclusions that quickly. I want you to not judge them based on your emotions alone. Instead, I want you to listen to their heart. Look at them with kindness. If you can do that, I’m sure you will be able to save more people in the future.”

While I was doubtful I would get to meet that kind of person in the future, or if I would be able to save anyone even, but the way Manager-san said it made me unable to argue with him. 

“I understand.”

Seemingly satisfied with my response, the manager looked at me with a gentle smile on his face. 

“No matter how much time passes, the fact still remains. You stole things to survive. However, I want you to hold your head high. You don’t need to be ashamed of that fact. Live your life proudly.”

Emotions welled up inside of me. Thanks to his words, I felt like a weight had been lifted from my heart.

With this, I finally had closed a chapter in my life that had been plaguing my heart for years. 

Would I be able to act like Manager Nishimura even if someone like the old me were to appear in front of me?

I pondered about it as I left the supermarket. I walked down the street, sighing as I soaked in the afterglow of my conversation with Manager Nishimura. 

Tonight, we’ll be having a barbecue party at the Tsutsuji household.

“Since I will need to buy meat for the party, I might as well buy it at Manager Nishimura’s supermarket for a change.”

I said as I turned on my heel. 

But then, a loud noise came from my smartphone. 

“The emergency alert?!”

I quickly turned my smartphone on.

Another SS-rank monster?! And this time in Asakusa?!

“I need to go there quickly!”
