- Chapter 6: A Hymn to the Living (Part 3)
Genfur looked at the diminutive humans who continued to struggle and felt superior. Their fate was no longer the same. He wanted to see those crying out in despair, but those wasting away to the end were not quite so miserable and not so bad.
The barrier magic repels the sword attacks of the Marysean soldiers, and the weapons of the otherworldly people who flew in to replace them pass through my own body. The otherworldly people are desperate, too.
When he thought of this, he felt ecstatic about him pushing them. These were the same beings who even Richarada could not defeat so spectacularly.
What a sweet moment! He continued to laugh.
[The melee weapons of the Marysean army, ineffective!]
[Bullets penetrated the barrier, but no damage to the target was observed!]
[Don’t be frightened! The maidens are on their way! Cover fire!]
Overhearing the report on the communicator, Kuze was carrying the 84mm recoilless gun and advancing on the fourth crawl along the side of the flower bed in the corner of the courtyard. The fourth crawl was a crawl in which the majority of the body was placed on the ground to move forward. If he stooped so low, the monster would not be able to see him from his blind spot.
Behind him was Carda, who was following him in a crawl as he watched.
“Hahaha… You are very good at crawling on the ground…” Although she was unequipped except for her Magic Sword, crawling, which she was not accustomed to, seemed to be hard for her.
Kuze chuckled, “I’ve trained so much that this is my job.”
“So you’re a knight whose job is to crawl on the ground…” From all his sarcasm, Carda seemed amused.
They were both covered in mud and looked terrible. It was a decisive battle, and they seem to think of it as funny that they were fighting in such a simple battle.
“When the warriors pass away to the underworld, I’ll have no trouble telling them this story.”
“Let’s make sure we don’t have trouble with stories at the drinking table in the afterlife.”
“No doubt.”
Soon, they arrived right next to the monster.
Unnoticed. A good start, Kuze thought.
“If Rumi breaks through the barrier, Kuze-dono will shoot at it, and I’ll move in when he does.” Kuze nodded at Carda’s words.
He held the 84 mm recoilless cannon in a prone firing position. He looked through the sighting device and aimed at the monster.
Rumi and her people were advancing, receiving covering fire from the SDF. There was no discrimination between worlds. There was only the battlefield and those who were not ready to give up on life.
With determined expressions, Rumi and her people looked ahead, clasped their hands together, and began chanting a spell in unison.
“Light is the only miracle that can defeat darkness! Display the purification of light to that which is darkness! Let there be light! Let the light shine!”
And light emerged from her hands. The magic was to purge the darkness by becoming a sun and emitting a purifying light. She took it one step and then another to dissolve the darkness that surrounds Genfur while managing to withstand the repulsion of the barrier magic.
“Those people have fulfilled their promise to protect us. Now it’s our turn to fulfill the promise!”
Rumi and the others put more force into their chanting. Even anguish was visible on their faces, and they were desperate. Then, suddenly, the repulsion vanished. The barrier magic disappeared due to their spell. However, the purifying light released by a mere dozen or so priest warriors could not completely purify the being that had become darkness itself.
The monster extended its tentacles, which had materialized, and attacked them.
“Aaagh!?!!” Rumi’s face contorted at the black tentacles entangling her body.
They tightened up just enough to lift her petite body off the ground.
“Hahahahaha! Cry! Cry out! Be dyed in despair!” The loud laughter was no longer human.
Genfur tightened his hold on Rumi as if toying with her, seemingly enjoying her suffering.
But…
“Heh!” Rumi laughed through the pain.
“Muuu…?” By the time Genfurl noticed the discomfort, it was too late.
Inside the flower bed on the side. A man wearing clothes that seemed to blend in with the grass and trees exclaimed, “Target in front, sight clear! Fire!”
Flames gushed out as something rushed in at ultra-high speed before exploding inside Genfur’s disembodied body, sending smoke and heat billowing out.
“Gaaaaaaaaaah!” Genfur was hit by a jolt as his body was torn apart.
“What the hell? How dare you!”
His concentration was disrupted, and the tentacles that had materialized returned to mist. The girl who had been tightened up by it fell to the ground and screamed.
He was caught off guard. But Genfur did not think it would be fatal. He was still complacent. Yet, before he could regain his bearings, a shadow leapt out of the cloud of dust. It was a woman.
“Ooooooooooooo!” The woman broke through the curling smoke and stood before Genfur’s eyes.
She was carrying the Magic Sword Balmung.
Seeing the sword Genfur wondered, As I recall, its owner, Richarda, died in cold blood…
“Howl, Sword! Dwell in the fire that destroys all!” The flames leaped. And the next moment, Genfur’s body was on fire.
The woman was releasing flames with her Magic Sword.
“Gyaaaaaaaaaaaaah!”
The woman sent the whips of flames flying toward him one after another as if using up the sword’s magical power. The flames engulfed Genfur’s entire body.
Delirious, he no longer even knew the opponent in front of him.
“”Forgive me! Forgive me… RICHARDAAAAAAAAAA!”
“Kut!”
At the same time, the woman, Carda, let go of her magic sword and began to retreat. Kato, who was watching the battle situation, shouted into his radio.
“Heat source secured! Request tomahawk launch!”
[Roger! Evacuate from the point of impact!]
Kato, who had finished communicating with the IBUKI, saw the missile fly away without a moment’s pause. The fierce flames of the rocket boosters soared high into the sky.
After the booster’s glistening combustion was complete, the three Tomahawk missiles detached from their boosters, deployed their stabilizing wings and entered into cruising mode.
The original range of the Tactical Tomahawk was 3,000 km. But the distance to the target this time was frighteningly short. They should reach it in less than a few minutes.
“Third Lieutenant Kuze! The missile has been fired! Get out of there quickly! You’ll get caught in the middle of it!”
Kato called out in a tense voice over the radio. However, Kuze’s voice sounded more urgent than that.
[Carda-san is still stranded near the monster!]
