Chapter 67: “Were They Worried About Me?”
Natsuki and Kazuto had frozen up for a moment after Poseidon’s sudden confession—
But seeing him standing there in his usual ridiculous swim trunks and fishing vest, smiling like always,
They both relaxed.
He might be a god, but he was still just good old Posei-san.
Since it felt like a rare chance, they decided to stop by a beef bowl chain for lunch, then headed to the back of Poseidon’s fishing gear shop to chat.
“It’s been a while since we came here. Posei-san, you only open the shop every now and then.”
“Forgive me! I am a god, after all—very busy, dooon!“
“You were suspiciously good at fishing, though.”
Over bowls of beef and rice, Natsuki and Kazuto reminisced about the time Poseidon had taught them how to fish when they were kids.
How to hold the rod, tie the line, work the catch, even how to ‘communicate’ with the water—
He’d taught them everything.
Neither of them ever imagined they were getting lessons from the sea god Poseidon himself.
They could only laugh about it now.
“Wait—does that lady you always work with… happen to be a goddess too!?”
“Nope! Just a part-timer from the neighborhood, dooon!“
“Gods hiring part-timers, huh… Truly feels like the Reiwa era now.”
For a brief moment, Natsuki and Kazuto had gotten their hopes up for the appearance of another god—
Only to be let down.
“I once thought about working here with my wives and children too, dooon. But, well… I have a lot of wives and children, so it turned into a huge mess, dooon! The wives even got into full-blown catfights, dooon!”
“That’s… a backstory I never needed to know.”
“Yeah. Adults are kind of the worst sometimes.”
Clearing his throat with a loud ahem, Poseidon shifted gears.
“Nacchan… No—boy who bears the Thunder Blade and holds the power of the sea.”
“…Posei-san?”
Natsuki straightened up as Poseidon suddenly grew serious.
“The ocean is vast—far too vast for humans… even for gods. It brings love and life, yes—but when angered, it becomes terrifying beyond imagination. That is the nature of the sea. You carry a strong power from the ocean… But with your body still growing, even I, Poseidon, do not know what kind of price you may pay if you use it. I pray—truly—that you never have to.”
“…Posei-san…”
“I watched your battles—against Susanoo-no-Mikoto, Thor the God of Thunder, and Mammon. Even without the holy sword you brought back from the other world, You already possess enough strength to stand toe-to-toe with gods and demons. And with that sword added to the mix, you’ve already experienced it for yourself—you can surpass even the divine. So the power of the sea is unnecessary. There’s no need to ever use it.”
Kazuto didn’t seem to follow all that,
But Natsuki understood exactly what Poseidon was saying.
“Many gods… many heroes throughout history have been consumed by overwhelming power. As someone who’s known you since you were little—I don’t want to see you end up like that. Not as a god, but as a friend.”
“Yeah.”
“Honestly, with how ridiculously strong you already are, I doubt you’ll ever need to use the power of the sea. But just in case… I wanted to make sure you heard it from me.”
“Thanks. If it’s a warning from the sea god Poseidon himself, I’ll take it seriously.”
“Good. If I were more skilled, I might’ve been able to help guide that power properly… but alas.”
“It’s fine. I never planned to use my ‘Hero of the Sea’ powers here anyway, so don’t worry.”
“In that case, I’m relieved.”
Poseidon gave a slow, quiet nod—
And Natsuki silently thanked him from the bottom of his heart.
“Umm… so, wait—what does all that actually mean?”
Still not following, Kazuto nervously asked the question everyone else might’ve been thinking.
Poseidon simply laughed.
“No need to worry, dooon! The short version is—if Nacchan tries to use that crazy sea power of his, his insides will go boom, so he’s better off not using it, dooon!“
“THAT IS ABSOLUTELY SOMETHING TO WORRY ABOUT!!!”
〜〜Afterword〜〜
We’ll revisit the “Hero of the Sea” powers another time.
Just remember—if even Poseidon’s worried about it, that means it’s seriously powerful.
Next time… a god descends!
