Chapter 65: “He’s Kind of a Big Deal, Isn’t He?” ①
“—The ocean… it’s calling to me.”
“Natsuki-kun, what are you talking about? We’re literally at the ocean.”
Standing at the edge of the dock at Mukaijima Port, Natsuki had one foot dramatically propped up on a mooring post, spouting nonsense like he was in some kind of movie.
Right behind him, Kazuto Miyahara rolled up on his bike and immediately called him out.
He, too, was fully geared up for a day of fishing.
“Well, you know, after all that craziness with the spaceship last night, I guess I’m still riding the high.”
“…They didn’t implant any kind of chip in you, right?”
“I dunno!”
“…………”
“…………”
A weird, uncomfortable silence settled between them—
So they forced a laugh and decided to get on with fishing.
“Alrighty then. What should we try to catch today?”
“I heard the rockfish are starting to bite again. They say the evening’s better, but you can still get some during the day too.”
“Nice, nice. Rockfish is good simmered.”
“I’ve also heard rumors that there are still some good-sized bigfin reef squid around.”
“Ooh, perfect for sashimi. That stuff’s super sweet.”
“It’s also the season for black sea bream.”
“That’s carpaccio material right there!”
“And over near the river mouth, I hear people are catching sea bass too.”
“Ah, that calls for some chilled sashimi slices!”
“…Okay, now I kind of want to just go to a sushi restaurant.”
“Same here!”
The waters around Mukaijima were full of variety.
Once May rolled around, the mackerel would start migrating through.
By late June, bigger game fish would begin to show up in full swing.
And at night, even cutlassfish could be caught.
All year round, if you fished near the shore, you could reel in octopus or scorpionfish—maybe not the biggest sizes, but you could definitely catch a bunch.
Cast your line out a little farther, and depending on the season, you might snag small filefish or whiting.
And maybe—just maybe—there were sea gods tied to this ocean too.
It’s just that Natsuki and Kazuto hadn’t realized it yet.
“Hey there! Nacchan, Kazuchan! It’s been a while!”
As the two were about to pick a spot and go for mixed fishing, a familiar old man waved at them.
“Oh, it’s you, old man!”
“Hello!”
“Yo! What’s this? Playing hooky from school, huh?”
“Sometimes there are days when fishing’s just more important.”
“…Well, I wasn’t exactly a model student either, but I never skipped school just to fish.”
Seeing Natsuki and Kazuto fishing in broad daylight on a weekday, the nearby old men couldn’t help but let out some awkward chuckles.
Thanks to their natural people skills, Natsuki and Kazuto had become friendly with most of the local anglers in the area.
Back when they were in elementary school—or just starting junior high—they’d often come to the ocean whenever they didn’t feel like going to class.
“Hey, by the way—have you seen Posei-san around lately?”
“Ah yeah, he’s been showing up again recently. Thanks to that, the fish have been biting like crazy. He was here just yesterday too.”
“Oooh! Then today’s looking good!”
“Totally!”
Posei-san was a rather unique fisherman from Greece.
Natsuki and Kazuto had become pretty friendly with him, and just before spring break, he’d even treated them to beef bowls after a fishing trip.
And whenever Posei-san showed up—there was always a big catch.
“Speak of the devil—there he is!”
The old man pointed toward the harbor, where a muscular middle-aged man appeared.
He had wavy blonde hair tied back, wore a fishing vest over a pair of aggressively cut swim trunks, and strutted forward like he was walking a fashion runway.
“Boom! Boom! Po-sei-doooon! Boom! Boom! Po-sei-doooon! YEAH!”
Whether it was a chant or a song was unclear, but there was no mistaking that signature entrance.
With that dramatic energy and confident stride along the seawall, the man was unmistakably Mukaijima Port’s most famous eccentric—Posei-san.
“Man… this feels so nostalgic. Like, in my head, it’s been years since I was last here.”
“Hey, hey, Natsuki-kun…”
“What’s up, Kazuto?”
“I mean, it’s kinda my fault for not realizing it sooner, but…”
“Hm?”
“Posei-san… isn’t he literally just yelling Poseidon?”
“—Wait, what?”
At Kazuto’s words, they both turned their ears toward Posei-san’s booming voice.
“Boom! Boom! Po-sei-doooon! Boom! Boom! Po-sei-dooon! Boom boom!”
“He’s actually yelling Poseidon!! And—and he’s totally radiating divine energy!! How did I never notice this until nowwwwwwwwwww?!”
Natsuki’s scream echoed through the skies and across the sea of Mukaijima—
Right alongside Posei-san’s booming voice.
