Chapter 64: “Did I Just Get Found Out?”
“Yaaawn… What a great morning. I guess I’m tougher than I thought. Even after regaining my memories of Kyoto, finding out Madoka-chan was actually Madoka-kun, hearing I supposedly died, and maybe even getting modified by Jack and the others— I still managed to sleep like a baby!”
Outside the window, sparrows chirped cutely, chun chun.
“…Maybe your body and mind were under so much stress that they just shut down and refused to think about anything. That’s what Satan thinks.”
“Yeah… that might actually be true.”
“From my perspective, it’s the only explanation.”
Last night, after they went back and picked up Satan—who’d been left behind in the spaceship—Natsuki yawned, said “I’m sleepy,” and knocked out on the spot.
No dreams, no tossing and turning.
He just closed his eyes… and when he opened them, it was morning.
Even the fatigue from fighting Thor had mostly faded—about 80% gone.
“Alright! Today’s the perfect day for fishing!”
“Oh no. This kid is clearly planning to skip school! But you know what? Satan doesn’t totally hate that.”
“Tonight, we feast on sashimi.”
“Don’t jinx it by saying that before we’ve even started!”
With that kind of casual banter, Natsuki in his tracksuit and Satan in his pajamas made their way down to the first-floor living room.
(Wait a sec… this old man brought his own pajamas. He definitely plans to stay here long-term.)
Well, that thought aside… this Demon King was already doing whatever he wanted, so it wasn’t even worth mentioning anymore.
Eventually, Koume would probably get sick of him and kick him out—that much was obvious.
So Natsuki decided to just leave it be.
“Good morning.”
“Morning, everyone. Ah—good morning, Haruko-san!”
The living room was already lively with the usual faces.
Haruko, Nancy, and Leviathan were preparing breakfast.
Jack was setting the plates.
Ginko was wiping down the table.
And Koume was sitting with a newspaper spread open, acting like she owned the place.
“’Sup. Morning to you. Hurry up and sit down.”
“…As a father, I can’t help but feel weird seeing my daughter act like a stereotypical old-school Showa-era Japanese old man.”
“Mind your own business.”
While all that was going on, Natsuki went to brush his teeth and rinse his mouth before returning to the table.
Breakfast was scrambled eggs, sausages, potato salad, and corn soup.
Freshly baked rolls from the local bakery were neatly arranged in a basket.
Since Natsuki preferred rice over bread, a bowl of glossy, perfectly cooked rice had been prepared just for him.
“Alright then, let’s eat.”
“Yes! Haruko-san, thanks for the food!”
“Ufufu, eat up.”
Satan looked absolutely delighted.
Getting to sit at the table and eat breakfast with Haruko clearly made him happy.
After that, he started acting like one of those food critics from cooking manga—
But since his commentary was super annoying, everyone just ignored him.
“Hey, hey, Natsuki-kyun!”
“…What is it, Leviako-san?”
“I’ve decided! If Haruko-mama becomes my future mother-in-law, I think I could totally handle it~”
“Why though?”
“She’s such a sweet and lovely mama~ My creator might be God, but he never acted like a real parent, you know? So I’ve always kind of admired the idea of having a parent.”
“…Putting aside whether anything happens between us or not, if it’s my mom, I’m sure she’d treat you like her own daughter.”
“I really hope so~”
Just earlier, Leviako had been helping with breakfast too.
It really did seem like he felt genuine affection toward Haruko’s warmth.
“Thanks for the meal!”
“My, you’re done early today. You usually take your time in the morning.”
As Natsuki clapped his hands and carried his dishes to the sink, Haruko tilted her head and asked.
“Kazuto’s coming to pick me up.”
“Oh?”
“Yeah. I’m gonna go get ready.”
Leaving those words behind, Natsuki headed back to his room.
A short while later, he came down wearing a full layered outfit: a sporty rain jacket and pants, fishing vest, sunglasses, and a cap.
He had a rod case slung over his shoulder.
“—Well then, I’m off to school.”
“—Hold it right there. There’s no way you’re going to school dressed like that. Nice try, but I’m not falling for it.”
Haruko had clearly seen through him.
Even she couldn’t ignore the fact that her son was wearing boots and looked way too ready to go fishing.
〜〜Afterword〜〜
And so, Natsuki-kun finally got caught skipping school!
But even so—next time, we’re going fishing!
Mysterious sea-dweller Posei-san is making his debut!
If you enjoyed the chapter, a follow, review, or comment would mean the world!
Thanks as always for reading!
He’s got a legit reason to skip. He’s being a bro for his buddy who just lost his (s*itbag of a) brother. Even proven narc Miyako was down with it.
