Chapter 63: “Did I Lose My Memory or Something?” ③
Back in the yard, Natsuki stood before the ground and gave it a full-on salute.
“I’m home, Earth. But sadly, the Natsuki Yura you all knew is gone. I’ve been… modified. From now on, I shall live as… Explorer Dynamic Avant-Garde Mammon-Mammon Ultra Super Hero Natsuki Yura! The Hero of the Kappa, the Hero of the Holy Sword, the Hero of the Sea—has now become… the Hero of Space!”
“What the hell are you even saying?”
“Please don’t be sad. The memories I made with all of you are forever in my heart. In the dark days ahead, that alone will be my light.”
“This sounds like the procedure totally failed. Like, an isekai hero died and now some space hero just got born out of it. Is he planning to conquer the galaxy now, or what? Is this okay?”
Koume pointed at the slightly glitched-out Natsuki, looking genuinely concerned.
Jack and Nancy, now back in human form, also wore troubled expressions.
“This is strange… My friend should’ve successfully regained his memories.”
“Should we… run the procedure again in the spaceship?”
“Double-check everything this time.”
“I’m kidding! Just kidding! I’m perfectly fine, Natsuki-kun’s all good! I got my memories back, I didn’t fall to the dark side—totally fine!”
Since the whole “space procedure” had honestly been kind of terrifying, Natsuki had tried to act all cheerful and silly to cover it up.
But the thought of getting dragged back into that spaceship made him panic.
“So, if you got your memories back… that means you remembered Kyoto too, right?”
“Yeah. But… not everything. Just parts of it.”
“I’m sorry, my friend. It’s just a guess, but… I think Haruko-dono was right. You probably went through something really frightening. I didn’t want to make you remember that part. Depending on the situation, it could trigger the trauma again. Honestly, I’m better at erasing memories than restoring them.”
“Thanks for being thoughtful.”
Natsuki patted Jack on the shoulder and thanked him.
He hadn’t gotten everything back, but pieces of his time in Kyoto had started to return.
“So? Did you figure out the important part?”
“Yeah. I don’t know if it’s the important part, but… Back in Kyoto—I was attacked by an oni.”
“Oh?”
“I remember the pain too. But there’s no scar on me now that shows I was attacked by an oni. I don’t remember what happened after that, but… I think something kind of fantasy-like must’ve happened.”
“…Is it really okay to just call that ‘fantasy’ and move on?”
Natsuki dropped the salute and his expression turned serious.
Koume and the others immediately turned their attention toward him, sensing something was off.
“I was totally living it up in Kyoto with this super cute kid named Madoka-chan, but—turns out Madoka-chan was actually a dude!”
“I need the full story on that, please!”
Hearing Natsuki’s dramatic outburst, Ginko flung open the window with a loud slam and came flying in.
Whether to call it unfortunate or just surprising—
It was now clear: Natsuki Yura had been in Kyoto.
And he’d remembered that he and Madoka Abe had been friends.
