Chapter 62: “Did I Lose My Memory or Something?” ②
Natsuki sat quietly in the yard, letting the night breeze wash over him as he stared off into space.
He had never even considered the possibility that he might have lost part of his memory.
There were so many things he wanted to forget…
And yet, it turned out he had lost the memories of his childhood.
That alone made him feel strangely sad.
It wasn’t confirmed yet whether Madoka Abe, the psychic from Kyoto, was really the same friend from his childhood.
But if he was—then Natsuki couldn’t help but feel sorry for him.
For someone so consumed by revenge.
In the other world, he’d met many people who sought revenge.
There was a man whose family had been killed by demons.
He turned into a full-blown avenger—willing to sacrifice anything, anyone, for the sake of vengeance.
Men, women, children—it didn’t matter.
He even used his fellow warriors as shields if it meant gaining the upper hand against the demons.
So Natsuki killed him.
Just like that.
Right before the man died, he looked up at Natsuki with eyes that seemed to ask, “Why?”
But to Natsuki, he had simply been in the way.
There was also a demon who had become a monster of revenge after his homeland was ravaged by humans.
He rose through the ranks and became one of the Four Heavenly Kings.
Even while burning with hatred, he treated the Demon Lord’s army like family, deeply cherishing his subordinates.
He was a man torn between vengeance and the desire to protect his new family.
A noble man in his own right.
But that didn’t matter to Natsuki.
In order to return to Earth, he first incinerated the demon’s closest companion in a single strike—
And while the man stood there in stunned silence, Natsuki lopped off his head.
That’s the kind of ending most avengers met.
Seishiro Kanna had also been someone seeking revenge.
But unlike the others, he had managed to stop himself before crossing a line he couldn’t return from.
Maybe it was because he’d always been a good person at heart, or maybe he just knew better.
In the end, he never caused any real harm to others.
And because of that—he was able to give up on revenge and return to a normal life.
A perfect example of why it’s better not to seek revenge at all.
“You’re looking awfully serious.”
“Koume-chan…”
With a can of beer in hand, Koume sat down beside Natsuki.
Satan followed and plopped down on his other side.
“What’s going onn? This isn’t like you, Natsuki. If you don’t remember, that’s fine, isn’t it?”
“That’s right, Natsuki! Look at me—I forgot my old name, Taichiro or something, and now I’m living positively as the nice middle-aged Demon King Satan!”
“‘Nice middle-aged’—that’s hilarious!”
“Koume-tan… you’re gonna make your dad cry. Like, seriously bawl. Like, ‘Waaah!’—super baby-style.”
“Stop it already!”
It was unclear whether they were trying to comfort him or just make him laugh.
Either way, once their comedy skit ended, the two suddenly grabbed onto Natsuki’s shoulders—firm grips, both sides.
“Uh, wait… Koume-chan? Satan-san?”
“Now, now, Natsuki. Leave this to the professionals.”
“Professionals!? What professionals!?”
“Doctor! It’s your turn!”
“Wait, who’s ‘Doctor’!?”
Just as Natsuki shouted in confusion—
A soft, glowing light descended from above, wrapping around all of them.
And at the same time… they started to float.
“—Abduction!?”
With a low, mechanical rumble, Natsuki and the others were sucked up into a spaceship.
■
When Natsuki opened his eyes, he found himself strapped down to a cold, silver table that looked like something out of a sci-fi surgery room.
“—WE ARE ALIENS.”
“I know that already!”
“—WE WILL NOW BEGIN THE PROCEDURE.”
“Wait, wait! Nancy-san, why are you holding a giant syringe?! Calm down, calm down! Jack, why are you wearing an apron? And not just any apron—it’s like the kind American butchers wear, right? Is that… for blood?! Are we really doing blood precautions right now!?”
“WE WILL NOW RESTORE THE MEMORIES THAT NATSUKI HAS LOST.”
“You’re really just restoring my memories, right? That’s all? Hold on, I see a scalpel at the edge of my vision! And that looks like a freaking hatchet! You’re not gonna make me lose something else while restoring my memories, are you?! You wouldn’t do something that cruel to your best friend, right?!”
But no matter how much Natsuki pleaded, the “procedure” by Jack and Nancy had already begun.
〜〜Afterword〜〜
The process to ahem restore memories has officially begun!
Picture a weird helmet with a bunch of blinking lights—something like that!
