Chapter 42: “Doesn’t a sleepover get you excited?” ②

“Sushiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!

In the Yura family’s living room, sitting cross-legged on the tatami floor, Koume raised her voice high in excitement. 

“Oh dear, I’m glad you’re pleased. But now that I think about it, considering our guest is from overseas, I wonder if sushi is appropriate? Are you alright with that?”

Haruko Yura, Natsuki’s mother, worried about Jack and Nancy, who were sitting in perfect seiza form. 

They smiled and thanked her.

“Thank you very much. We like sushi. We used to eat raw fish in our home country too.”

“Thank you for your concern.”

“That’s good to hear. Now, Ginko-chan, please take a seat too.”

“Am I also allowed?”

“Oh, are you still working?”

“No, it’s not that.”

“Since you brought Natsuki here, please, have some too. I ordered extra sea urchin and salmon roe, Ginko-chan’s favorites, so please.”

Ginko, who had planned to leave after dropping off Natsuki, was a bit puzzled by the invitation to stay for a meal.

“Come on, Ginko-san, let’s eat together. It’s a little token of thanks for everything.”

“Even Natsuki-kun… Well, then, I’ll partake without reservation!” 

Just in case, to avoid trouble with his mother, Ginko had left her swords, Taro and Hanako, in the car. 

While Ginko seemed wary of Koume, who looked about ready to drool over the sushi, Natsuki wasn’t concerned. Any misunderstanding about him being a demon had been cleared up, and after receiving an apology, he knew there was no longer any hostility or threat of being attacked again.

From the way he held his chopsticks more elegantly than a Japanese person, it was clear that Natsuki was not at all contemplating a rematch. 

“Would you like some alcohol? We only have beer, though.”

“I’ll have some!”

Koume was the first to respond, her eyes sparkling more than anyone else’s. 

Jack and Nancy also accepted their glasses with gratitude, saying, “Thank you very much.”

“Ah, I’m driving.”

“Then, will you stay over?”

“Eh? Wouldn’t I be a bother?”

“Ginko-chan is more than welcome. Besides, I’ve heard that everyone is staying over, and we have spare rooms, so please, feel free.” 

“No, really, I feel bad. But I’ll gladly accept, thank you!”

With Ginko’s overnight stay subtly decided, beer adorned with mythical creatures was poured into glasses, making a lively sound as it filled them.

The unique aroma of the beer tickled Natsuki’s nostrils. 

“Ugh, I really can’t stand the smell of beer.”

“Fuhahaha, you’re such a kid, Natsuki! The scent, the initial bitterness, the depth, and then the crisp finish, it’s irresistible! Oh, sorry, shall we toast now?” 

Unable to hold back any longer, Koume politely requested, prompting Natsuki to raise a tea cup filled with green tea.

“Then, a toast to Natsuki’s friends coming over to visit!”

Led by the mother, everyone toasted. 

Natsuki’s mother, Jack, and Nancy only took a sip, but Koume and Ginko gulped down their beer, making audible sounds as they drank it all in one go.

“Ah, this is bliss! I haven’t had the money to enjoy beer for a while, so this is just perfect!” 

“Man, nothing beats a beer after a day’s work! It’s the best!”

With their mouths frothy, creating makeshift beards, Koume and Ginko said, “Let’s eat!” and reached for the sushi with their chopsticks.

Koume picked a piece of fatty tuna, lightly dipped it in soy sauce, and savored it in one bite. 

“Ah, I like how it melts in my mouth. If I could be reborn, I’d want to be Japanese.” 

Next to a delighted Koume, Ginko was enjoying sea urchin. 

“This is amazing… Haven’t had sushi in about a year. Sea urchin sushi is the best!” 

“Oh dear, both of you eat as much as you like. Jack-san and Nancy-san, please go ahead too.”

“Thank you.” 

“We will, thank you.” 

Jack and Nancy also started to enjoy their sushi deliciously.

Natsuki too reached out for a shrimp sushi. 

(No cucumber rolls {Kappamaki} huh… Come to think of it, they said kappa exist, so maybe there’s a future where I get to eat cucumber rolls with an actual kappa.) 

In front of beings like angel Lucifer and Grey aliens, Natsuki pondered on kappa in a very Japanese manner.
