Chapter 15: Minato Myougi’s… Ability?
“I want taiyaki.”
“…Huh?”
Class had just ended, and the classroom was starting to buzz with noise.
Minato marched right up to me with this gloomy look and just blurted it out.
I couldn’t help but give a dumb-sounding reply.
“Taiyaki. You know, taiyaki.”
“Yeah, I get it, but still.”
“Don’t you ever just crave one outta nowhere?”
“…Can’t say I do.”
Honestly, taiyaki wasn’t exactly part of my daily life.
I rarely even thought about it, let alone craved one.
Minato let out a heavy sigh, like she couldn’t believe me.
“So anyway, let’s hit the school store.”
“They sell taiyaki at the store?”
“’Course they do. It’s a must-have.”
She flipped her dyed brown hair as she strutted off.
The loose ponytail tied at her waist swayed side to side like a tail.
Honestly, she looked like a big excited dog.
When we reached the school store, the place was packed.
The guy running the counter—yeah, I’m choosing my words carefully here—looked totally swamped trying to keep up with all the customers.
I didn’t really want anything, so I just leaned against the wall and let Minato dive headfirst into the crowd.
Arms crossed, I watched the sea of bodies shifting.
“…Man, this place is crawling with yankees.”
That thought slipped right out.
Every single one of them looked fired up, eyes practically blazing.
Naturally, with so many people, it took forever just to buy something.
Even after a few minutes, Minato still hadn’t come back—I could just barely see her struggling her way through the human waves.
It was kinda funny, honestly, so I just stood there watching.
That’s when a pair of girls, already done shopping, noticed me and started walking over.
“Oh? What’s up, onii-san?”
“Bored? C’mon, hang with us for a bit.”
“Uh, no… I’m waiting for someone.”
One of them had her hair up in a bun with shaved sides.
For an introvert like me, this was basically my natural enemy.
“Relax, it’s fine.”
“Yeah, yeah. We’ll be way more fun than whoever you’re waitin’ for.”
“No, seriously… please stop.”
They might’ve been blonde on the outside, but me? Deep down, I was just a pure-hearted virgin boy.
With their loose uniforms and chests practically on display, I had no choice but to bow my head and retreat.
But that only fired them up even more.
One slammed her hand against the wall—kabedon—leaning in close enough that I could feel her breath.
And since this was happening right in front of the school store, a crowd had started gathering.
Some voices even shouted out, half-laughing: “Let me join toooo!”
“Hehe, look at that. We’ve got an audience…”
“Guess we should take this somewhere more private…”
They grabbed my arm.
This was it. The end.
I shut my eyes in resignation—
But then, a familiar voice sliced through the noise.
“Takuma.”
“…Yayoi?”
I forced my eyes open—
And there she was. Yayoi, grinning from ear to ear.
Around us, the crowd buzzed even louder.
“Oh crap, is he friends with Akagi-san…!?”
“Then he’s the rumored favorite…!”
The two of them shot nervous glances at each other, then bolted with a quick, “Sorryyy!”
I just stood there, stunned, watching them run off.
They backed down just from her showing up.
So this was the weight of a true leader’s presence, huh.
Yayoi clomped over toward me.
“Did they do anything to you?”
“Nope, nothing.”
“Good~!”
She smiled with that pure, childlike grin of hers.
Tilting her head, she leaned against my side, still looking a little worried.
That’s when I noticed Minato—she’d somehow managed to buy her taiyaki.
She was staring at us, face pale, like she was watching a movie character about to die.
Well… given Yayoi’s reputation, I couldn’t exactly blame her.
I let out a wry smile.
“Yayoi.”
“Hm?”
“What’s up today? Kinda rare for you to show up here.”
I’d seen her at school a fair bit lately, but from what Asama told me, Yayoi showing up in class was supposed to be rare.
When I asked, she narrowed her eyes in a playful smile.
“Because I wanted to see you, Takuma!”
“…Me?”
“Yep!”
“Let’s go to our usual classroom!” She tugged on my arm and started dragging me along.
But Minato’s face flashed through my mind, and I glanced back her way.
“…Ah, Takuma-kun.”
“—Oh yeah, you’re that girl who picked a fight the other day.”
Yayoi had noticed Minato too.
Her eyes slowly shifted toward her.
Like a frog caught in a snake’s stare, Minato froze.
Her mouth opened and closed wordlessly, like a fish gasping on land.
“You come too.”
“Eh—h-hehh!? M-Me as well!?”
Her voice cracked, completely submissive, her whole body radiating desperate flattery.
Pathetic. Seriously pathetic.
…But maybe that was part of Minato Myougi’s charm.
I couldn’t stop the smile tugging at my lips.
Without a single complaint—or maybe because she couldn’t complain—Minato followed us all the way to the club building.
By the time we reached the top floor, she was half-fainted, eyes rolling, tears already welling at the corners.
Yayoi sprawled grandly on the sofa.
She crunched a candy between her teeth, then pointed the leftover stick straight at Minato.
“What was your name again?”
“M-Mmmy humble self is Minato Myougi, at your service!”
“Yeah, stop talkin’ like that. It’s annoying.”
Minato dropped to the floor in a full-on seiza, practically throwing her pride away.
Her obsequious tone was so cringe I almost looked away.
Yayoi cut her down with an icy glare and a single sharp line.
“I only let it slide ‘cause you’re Takuma’s friend… but why do you think small fries pick on you? It’s ‘cause you—Minato—look weak, right? Even though you strut around calling yourself the so-called Myougi faction.”
“…I-I guess that’s true…”
“Damn right it is.”
Leaning her elbow against the back of the sofa, Yayoi kept talking.
“So then, how do you stop nobodies from messin’ with you? Easy. Either you get strong enough they can’t look down on you… or you’ve got a powerful backer standin’ behind you.”
“R-Right…”
“Which brings me to this.”
—How about the Akagi faction and the Myougi faction go to war?
That suggestion… I knew it.
It was something that happened in the manga too.
But back then, it didn’t happen until months later.
The story racing forward this fast made my head spin.
