Volume 2 Chapter 17 Mermel’s Egg Hatches
“Fire is fierce, and the egg is scorching hot…”
At the summit of an active volcano on the southern continent, a little girl, seemingly out of place in such an environment, sat watching the egg she was tending to. Despite the intense heat, she had a campfire going, adding to the already high temperatures.
The egg was glowing red-hot, seemingly on the verge of being damaged, yet there was a relaxed atmosphere. This little girl, or rather, the elite angel Mermel, had a gut feeling that this was the right way to do it, so it must be correct. The egg inside was shaking and making noises, indicating it was about to hatch.
“What should I name this little one? Maybe something like Super Phoenix Ultimate?”
It’s a mystery how she knew what was inside the egg she got from a gacha, but in Mermel’s mind, it was already decided that the egg contained a top-tier divine beast, a Phoenix. Her intuition seemed limitless.
If only she had a bit more combat ability, she would be a formidable being. Fortunately, this little angel lacked direct fighting power. Her angelic flames were highly effective against demons, but that was a very limited scope.
Back to the matter at hand, the egg, named Super Phoenix Ultimate, shook again, as if rejecting the unimpressive name.
“What’s wrong? Why don’t you like it? Such a picky egg.”
The egg’s dissatisfaction was clear. Despite Mermel’s insistence, her names kept escalating in grandeur, from Hyper Phoenix to Infinity Phoenix, but she couldn’t think of anything else.
Her fixation on grandiose names showed just how much she anticipated the egg’s hatching and how much she expected from it.
Mermel meant no harm, after all.
“No, no. You seem to be a picky one, so we’ll stick with the first name I came up with. I feel like a lot of fun things are waiting for us, so let’s enjoy them together, alright?”
Even though she didn’t change her mind, it was clear that she had a lot of love for the egg.
The egg, responding to the little angel’s words, stopped rattling and continued to warm up in the combined heat of the campfire and magma. After some time, as it simmered in the molten soup, the egg began to glow with a dazzling light.
“It’s here! It’s finally here! FHOoooOOO!”
With a massive explosion, the power of the overexcited little angel and the egg’s energy merged, creating an enormous blast.
Caught in the blast, Mermel spun like a newspaper caught in a tornado, but her face was beaming with satisfaction.
As the explosion subsided…
“Huh?”
There, standing majestically, was a fearsome-looking shoebill stork. It was not the creature Mermel had expected. She blinked in surprise, removing her sunglasses to make sure she wasn’t seeing things.
Instead of a phoenix, a shoebill had hatched. It was a shocking development.
Moreover, its face was a hundred times more intimidating than she’d imagined, so terrifying that meeting its gaze could make one tremble.
“Gwah!”
“…”
“Gwah! Gwah?”
“…!!”
Accepting the reality, Mermel put her sunglasses back on and, trying to show affection, hugged the shoebill that came from the egg gacha. However, the bird’s fearsome presence was too much, and she couldn’t look it in the eye.
In fact, her legs were already shaking, and she had slightly wet herself out of fear.
Even when the shoebill, now named Super Phoenix Ultimate, made a sound to get her attention, Mermel could only look away. It was a pitiful sight, like a child encountering a scary animal at a petting zoo.
Incidentally, this shoebill stork, despite its appearance not resembling a phoenix at all, is indeed a divine beast.
It’s actually a subspecies of the phoenix, which typically has red wings, and is known as Phoenix Mark II, the black-winged version, which is the rarest and most valuable draw in the egg gacha.
In addition to the phoenix’s abilities of “divine flame” and “regeneration,” it also possesses a fear-inducing ability called “glare.”
“I-I-I-I’ll t-t-take good care of you from now on! P-P-Please be nice to me!”
“Gwah!”
She was utterly terrified, stumbling over her words. However, the fear would only last initially. Eventually, she would grow accustomed to the divine beast, Super Phoenix Ultimate, and they would become good friends.
For now, as long as she avoided eye contact, she managed not to wet herself. This might continue for a while.
Despite these circumstances, the new divine beast that joined Mermel would joyfully fly around the world with the little angel on its back. Along the way, many people experienced both fear and fortune, but that’s another story.
Soon enough, she would probably join up with the little devils currently in the midst of their adventures. If she didn’t learn to control the shoebill’s “glare” by then, it could spell trouble.
On a side note…
“You seem to scare everyone, don’t you~? I guess I’ll lend you my sunglasses for now.”
“Gwah~”
Or so such an exchange might have occurred, somewhere along the journey.
