Chapter 3 Three years have passed since the drifting
“Heave-ho~ and heave-ho~… Mmm, delicious.”
It’s been about three years since drifting into this world.
While diligently gathering information about entities like the celestial realm and the underworld that probably exist, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying a slow life in the forest.
To cut to the chase, it seems there are indeed administrators in this world.
In the celestial realm, there’s a creation goddess who brought the world into existence, as well as sword gods and war gods who serve as lower-ranked deities.
And naturally, there exists the underworld.
Here, it’s referred to as the demon realm, but the content seems similar.
It’s a region inhabited by groups of demonic beings who oppose the gods, hence the underworld or demon realm.
“The fried dragon’s meat is indeed delicious. The melting tenderness of the flesh and the crunchy texture of the soul are addicting.”
That’s why I’m pondering.
How precarious is my current position? And if it is precarious, how can I avoid this precarious situation and fully enjoy my slow life?
Honestly, for now, my existence hasn’t been noticed by them.
I haven’t done anything reckless in this world, nor have I directly ventured into the celestial realm or demon realm.
Moreover, I’m a demon who came from another world.
Since I’m somewhat different from the beings called the demon tribe here, unless someone is exceptionally perceptive, they probably won’t see through me at first glance.
And from what I’ve investigated, the angels and lower-ranked gods of this world are probably fine in terms of strength.
I’m stronger than them.
While angels on the Earthly dimension might have been dangerous, the angels and lower-ranked gods here aren’t as terrifyingly powerful.
Well, there are more of them, but unless I’m attacked by a group, I probably won’t lose.
Perhaps Earth values quality over quantity, while this world values quantity over quality. And the same could be said for the demon realm.
“Ahh, that hit the spot. It’s been a while since I had a big catch.”
So, the conclusion I reached was, huh, there aren’t many threats in this world, are there?
Of course, the goddess who is the creator deity is stronger than me.
But compared to the elderly gods of the Earthly dimension or the demon king, there’s a difference in power like that between an adult and a child.
So, isn’t that fine?
Isn’t it okay to enjoy a peaceful slow life?
That’s what I thought.
“Now that breakfast is done, maybe I’ll head to the base on the western continent today. I hope those folks in the pioneer village are doing well.”
By the way, for the past three years, I’ve been on a demon journey around the world for the investigation of the heavens and the underworld. Interestingly, the size of this planet was about the same as Earth’s.
Naturally, however, the continents have changed considerably. Currently, the untrodden land where I’ve set up my base, the Eastern Continent, along with various other lands large and small, exist across the seas.
Among them, I particularly enjoy the living areas of humanity with civilizations resembling those of the early Middle Ages, such as the Western and Southern Continents and the surrounding islands.
In this world, sailing by ship is unexpectedly difficult due to gigantic sea creatures with magical powers and unprecedentedly severe weather conditions.
Consequently, there have been no significant ventures beyond the nearby Western and Southern Continents into the outside world, leaving it uncharted territory.
By the way, there is a human settlement on the Northern Continent as well. However, due to its distance from the East, West, and South, there is no interaction, and they have formed their own civilization and worldview in the north.
Well, that’s roughly the result of my investigation.
Now, shifting gears, the folks in the pioneering villages of the Western Continent are truly delightful people.
The first time I met them was when I was using magic to create my base on all four continents. The villagers I met then were incredibly kind to me.
Naturally, to avoid trouble, I concealed the symbols of demons—horns, wings, and tail. But even without those, they probably would have accepted me, such was the open-mindedness of those people.
So, having taken a liking to the villagers of the pioneering village, I often visited them through teleportation, posing as a traveling merchant, and engaged in interactions with them.
The frequency? Roughly once a month or so.
“Hey there, old gatekeeper! Still kicking, huh? I’ve come to share some dragon meat with you today!”
“Hohoho… Kakyu, is it? I’m alive and kicking, as you can see. And to think you’ve got dragon meat again today, your tales keep getting more and more lively!”
Kakyu—that’s my name.
Back when I was in the underworld, I didn’t have a name. But for the sake of interacting with people, I decided to introduce myself as Kakyu, a lower demon, just Kakyu.
By the way, I’ve been bringing dragon meat as a souvenir every time, but so far, not a single person in the pioneering village has believed me. It seems like everyone thinks it’s just a joke.
Well, normal humans can’t exactly defeat fire dragons, so it’s a reasonable judgment.
There’s no real reason to reveal the truth, and I’m not particularly in need of money, so I just go along with the joking atmosphere without denying it.
“Hey, calm down, we get it, you’re still active. If you swing that spear around at your age, you’ll hurt your back.”
“What’s this nonsense! Hmph! Haa! Seiyaaaahhhh!? My… my back!”
“I didn’t mean to…”
If a man over sixty makes such reckless moves, that’s bound to happen. Looks like he really did a number on his back.
He used to be quite the tough adventurer back in his active days, but he should consider his age now.
Well, I do like this village elder’s slightly foolish side.
Well, I’ll have to use magic to heal the old man’s back for now.
“There, old man, feeling better?”
“Oh, yes… Your magic really does wonders on these old bones. How about running a clinic here in the village instead of peddling? My great-granddaughter seems to admire you, too. She’ll grow up to be a beauty, you know? A dream clinic run by a married couple, wouldn’t that be nice?”
No, that wouldn’t be nice at all.
Actually, this old man always finds some excuse to try to matchmake his great-granddaughter with me.
I’ve turned him down countless times, but he doesn’t seem to understand the meaning of giving up.
But some things are just impossible.
I’m not a lolicon, after all.
I mean, his great-granddaughter is only nine years old. There’s no way I could take her in.
“Anyway, instead of talking nonsense, let’s all have a barbecue party together. By the way, this really is dragon meat.”
“Hohoho, I know.”
While saying he knows, the old man who doesn’t seem to believe me at all, I lead him and start a barbecue with everyone in the pioneering village.
