Chapter 2 Blown away and washed up
“Hmm, is it over?”
“G-Grrrr… You’re quite something, you old fart.”
“Don’t be foolish. Demon King, you should reflect a little.”
The god muttered to himself, surveying the scorched earth that had become of the underworld.
Although the excessive interference with humanity, which was on the brink of destruction due to the demons, was meant to cease and encourage reflection, the scene spread before him might have been a bit too much.
The Demon King was battered and bruised, with not a single demon under his command surviving. It was truly a massacre.
However, demons don’t completely die, and they’ll eventually revive, albeit with their power halved. It wasn’t an irreparable slaughter.
“But it seems one got away…”
“Huh? Did you say something, old man?”
“N-No…”
The Demon King, who had been thoroughly beaten and lacked concentration, didn’t realize it, but the god did.
The one demon who endured the god’s relentless assault for twenty minutes and ultimately escaped to the void between dimensions, managing to survive.
It would still be possible to pursue him even now, but the god pondered what to do next.
“Well, that’s fine. I didn’t sense any malice from that demon, and if he’s as exceptional as he seems, he won’t meet his end no matter what realm he ends up in.”
“What? A demon without malice? …Ah, you mean that one. Indeed, I can’t detect his soul around here. Damn, I let a talented one slip away. I had my eye on him.”
Listening to the god’s mutterings, the Demon King also became aware of his absence.
Even after scanning the demons who were now just souls, that particular one… wasn’t there.
Which means, he likely escaped unscathed, just as the god said.
The Demon King had always held that low-ranking demon’s abilities in high regard.
Despite not having experienced evolution, he had the strength to rival a duke-level demon who had been heavily blessed, and his cowardly and calculating nature, unlike ordinary demons, was something the Demon King admired.
That one wasn’t ordinary.
Although she still believed she was more deserving of being the Demon King for now, she wondered what would happen in another ten thousand years.
That’s why it’s regrettable to have let him slip away like this.
“All right, shall we pursue?”
“Stop it, Demon King. Reflecting on our actions should come first. Besides, if that demon is determined, he’ll eventually return on his own. If he doesn’t come back, it means he has no intention to.”
“…Well, that’s true. Ahh! Damn it! It’s not fair! Playing with humans and letting that one go don’t balance out at all, you old fart!”
“Well, let’s include that in our reflections.
Or rather, don’t play with humans.”
The god, shaking his head in exasperation, resumed lecturing the Demon King once again.
◇
Floating and drifting through the void between dimensions.
Drifting. Drifting. Drifting.
“Dooonburakoo~, doonburakoo~”
Uh, currently leisurely swimming in this thing called the void between dimensions.
It’s been about three months in Earth’s time units already, I guess?
Well, for me, who has lived as a demon for thousands of years, it’s not much time at all.
Besides, demon bodies are sturdy, and with magic, you can manage in almost any place.
Swimming through the void between dimensions is no big deal.
The problem is what lies ahead in this swim, and what kind of exit it leads to. I wonder what to do.
Honestly, if the world ahead is connected to some world’s heaven or something, there might be a real danger to my life.
The chances of that are probably less than decimal points, but the fact that it’s not impossible is what’s frightening.
At that time, I’ll have to prepare myself to kneel down and apologize.
Drifting and swaying like this, finally, I can see the exit.
From the feeling of it, it seems like there’s no heaven.
“More like a forest teeming with life.”
It’s similar to Earth’s environment, also known as the natural world or the human world.
So, is this another world?
Or is it just fantasy?
Well, I’ll find out once I step out.
“Heave-ho!”
Finally, I’ve reached the end point of the void between dimensions and successfully set foot on solid ground.
The place is a dense, lush forest. It’s not as hellish as the underworld, but it’s an environment where demons can easily wield their power.
In other words, it’s proof that this place contains a significant amount of magical energy, which can be considered the source of demon energy.
Since Earth had very little magical energy, it required considerable power to emerge from hell, but it seems that’s not the case here.
Well, that’s convenient, so there shouldn’t be any major problems.
However, in a world so overflowing with magical energy, it’s highly likely that many of the inhabitants here have aptitude for magic.
It gives off an impression close to what you’d call a fantasy world.
I’m not sure about the level of civilization here, whether it’s medieval, modern, primitive, or far future.
“But judging from this lush forest, I’d say there’s probably no modern or futuristic era. Most likely.”
As a low-level demon lurking in the hell of the Earth dimension, I don’t know much, but if I were to compare it to that world, a world where technology is advanced wouldn’t have a forest with such a strong presence of life.
So, for now, I estimate the era to be somewhere between primitive and medieval.
“To be honest, anything’s fine. More importantly, rather than worrying about that, since I’ve safely escaped from that hellish war, I should thoroughly investigate and establish a stable living environment first.”
Above all, I must be cautious of the celestial realm that undoubtedly exists in this world.
I don’t know how much power the gods of this world have or what their personalities are like, but I’m just a low-level demon.
I shouldn’t do anything too conspicuous or increase my workload unnecessarily.
Well then, let’s take a step forward for a slow life!
