Chapter 16 The past of a warrior and the plans of a lower-class devil
“…So, that’s the gist of it. Well, to put it simply, it’s just stubbornness.”
“I see, I’ve more or less grasped the situation.”
After listening to Gaius’s circumstances for a while, I could roughly piece together his past.
In essence, he cursed himself and seems to want revenge on the opponent who defeated him as a warrior.
He doesn’t want to heal his eyes until he’s fulfilled his revenge, hoping to break the curse as a result of avenging himself.
I understand his feelings, so I won’t press the matter any further.
I think it’s best to let him do as he pleases.
However, there’s one concern.
The issue lies with this opponent of his revenge.
“Wow… Gaius has been through some incredible adventures!”
“Yeah, it was one hell of a battle. As a high-ranking adventurer participating in a war quest, suddenly a group of demons appeared and wreaked havoc. I thought I was done for. Managed to bring it to a draw, but ended up cursed in the end. Well, overall, I’d say it was my loss.”
Indeed, demons.
This formidable warrior was faced with an entity that defeated him in battle and caused chaos on the battlefield.
It’s understandable that if demons interrupted while both sides were fighting, it would cause confusion in the command structure. From the perspective of meddling with humans, it couldn’t have been more effective.
But Gaius wasn’t just standing by silently. He challenged the marauding horde of demons single-handedly, managed to hold them off, and brought about both sides’ retreat.
It seems he was cursed during this retreat, but without Gaius’s achievements, the damage would have been even greater. However, in terms of guild war quests, it seems to have failed due to the demons’ interference. The details of which side won or the extent of achievements were overshadowed.
He apparently received a hefty reward as compensation for participating in the quest, but he truly is an unlucky man.
Nevertheless, through this, I understood the reason why Gaius was seeking the battlefield as a warrior even after settling things with Sebas. If there were ever another encounter with those demons, he likely intends to settle the score and eliminate the root cause of the curse.
That would indeed be the mark of victory.
Well, whether those demons will appear on the battlefield again is a matter of luck, so there’s quite a bit of gambling involved.
If need be, I could even use reverse detection to trace the curse on Gaius and pinpoint the demons by tracing their magical flow. Since he serves as Ars guardian, I can’t easily involve him in warfare, so this might be the fastest solution for restoring his sight.
After all, it’s just a magic cast by demons in this world, which is of a lower level compared to Earth. With the power to rival a duke-class demon over there, this low-ranking demon should be within reach.
Gaius has a fair chance in a proper one-on-one battle, which is why he seeks revenge like this. It’s not a bad idea.
And it seems Ars might have had similar thoughts, judging by the look in his eyes as he gazes at me, as if he wants to say something.
“….Dad.”
“Yeah, that’s right. Hmm, it’s not impossible, you know?”
“Huh! Really!”
Indeed, really.
For Dad, this is just a piece of cake~
Just a little concerned about attracting attention from the heavenly or demonic realms, but unless the goddess of creation or something decides to drop by, there’s no way I’ll lose in terms of power.
For Ars, who’s bouncing around with excitement, I want to be the father who doesn’t disappoint his expectations.
“Hey, what’s going on? I have no idea what you two are talking about.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll explain later.”
Well, even if we’re planning to lure the demons, some preparations will be necessary.
Whether Gaius wins or loses, we’ll need to consider the aftermath of the battle.
Once those preparations are in place, I’ll explain this to him.
And we’ll need weapons too, huh.
“Hmm, but the equipment sold in stores is insufficient in terms of power… Well, I guess I’ll just have to make it myself.”
“Huh? What do you mean, Master?”
“No, I mean your equipment, Gaius.”
It’s a bit late to mention, but I’m the one who built this castle, including the bases on each continent.
Of course, it’s all thanks to my abilities as a demon honed over two thousand years, particularly my expertise in alchemy alongside magic.
Well, alchemy uses magic too, so in a broad sense, it’s like magic, but let’s not dwell on that.
In terms of abilities, I’m just as skilled in alchemy as I am in magic.
To give you an idea, even in the hell dimension of Earth, I created my own war-avoidance shelter and endured attacks from that old god for about twenty minutes. That should give you an idea of my proficiency in alchemy.
So, if I put a little effort into it, I can easily surpass the weapons and armor made by the blacksmiths of this world. If Gaius is planning to confront the demons, I want to provide him with at least this level of support.
Initially, I was just going to provide basic weapons, leaving the rest up to him, but I’ve changed my mind. With Ars looking forward to a rematch with the demons, this man’s defeat is simply not an option.
Heh heh heh, prepare yourself, Gaius.
“M-Master, you seem rather intimidating…”
“Dad, you’re amazing! So cool!”
That’s right, that’s right!
Ha ha ha ha ha!
