Reincarnated as the Villain Who Experiments on Orphanage Kids – Why Are the Test Subject Girls Begging Me for "Night Experiments"? - Chapter 2
Chapter 2: Attacked by the Test Subject
“Everyone, have you done brushing your teeth? If you’re not, get in line.”
The kids line up in front of the sink area.
The shorter ones step onto little stools, while the taller ones help the younger kids.
It’s a peaceful scene.
In my past life I was always shut up in the lab, but now I spend my days looking after these kids like this.
“Hey Sai! Look!”
Someone tugs on my sleeve and I turn around. The cheeky one, John, opens his mouth really wide and shows me his teeth.
“I brushed them properly!”
“Alright, let me see.”
I check and John’s teeth are sparkling clean.
“Good, you pass.”
“Yay!”
I ruffle his hair and he squints his eyes happily, then bounces away toward the bedroom.
“Master! Me too!”
“Teacher! Check mine too!”
“Hey hey, one at a time, okay? Brushing teeth is like lining up at a ramen shop—you gotta get in line first.”
I check the kids’ teeth one after another.
Thanks to the daily reminders, none of them have any spots left unbrushed. Everyone’s teeth are sparkling.
—Five years have passed since I remembered my past-life memories.
Right now I’m twenty-five years old, Mad Sai the Scientist, living a peaceful slow life with no connection to any bad ending.
Of course I’m not doing any human experiments.
I don’t do anything inhumane. I just study magic as a personal hobby, do the bare minimum training for self-defense, and eat the ramen I love.
Every day is perfectly peaceful.
Well, looking after the kids is still tough, though.
A lot of them are stubborn, and since this world is full of orphans, plenty of them carry emotional scars.
Taking care of kids like that is never easy.
But that’s exactly what makes it worth doing, I guess.
When I suddenly got reincarnated I wondered what would happen, but I’m actually enjoying life here.
“Hey, can you check mine too?”
“Please check me!”
“Sai-sama, please!”
When I go to the bedroom to put the kids to bed, three girls come up and surround me.
They’re the oldest ones in the orphanage. Fifteen years old, basically young ladies who just became adults.
“You three still need a teeth-brushing check? You’re all proper adults now, right?”
The teeth check is normally only for kids under ten. As they grow older, most of them start feeling embarrassed about it.
Even so, these three still come begging for it without any shame, even after turning fifteen.
It’s true they each have their own special circumstances, but still, they’re way too attached to the director.
When I think about how they’ll have to leave the nest someday, I should probably push them away a little here.
“Once you’re an adult, no more teeth checks. Hurry up and go back to your rooms and sleep.”
As soon as I say that, all three of them make really obvious unhappy faces.
“Why not! Don’t just decide that by yourself!”
“I think that’s too bossy.”
“Sai-sama, I can’t sleep if I don’t get a teeth check. It makes me anxious.”
The three of them step closer, but I’m not the type to give in.
I slip out of their circle with a quick move and head straight for the big room where the kids are sleeping.
“………………………………”
“………………………………”
“………………………………”
I feel their intense stares on my back, but I don’t turn around.
This is part of my job as director, too.
*
“Phew…”
After tucking the kids in and finishing up my little hobbies, the date has already changed a long time ago.
My eyes are heavy with sleep, but I still take a bath, then flop onto my bed spread-eagle.
In the orphanage, rooms are divided by age.
Kids under ten sleep together in the big room, kids ten to fifteen live three to a room, and once they turn fifteen they get their own private room.
By the way, I have a completely private room too. With a lock.
I may not look it, but I’m the director, so my treatment inside the orphanage is pretty good.
“Haaaaah…”
I collapse onto the bed, let out a big sigh, and close my eyes.
Every day is fulfilling, but the buildup of fatigue is no joke.
The orphanage gets support from the country, but the funds still aren’t exactly overflowing, so we barely hire any staff.
Including me, there are only three adults.
Against that, we have more than twenty kids.
Basically they leave once they become adults, but orphans keep coming, so there’s definitely a limit to our capacity.
We accept any kid who shows up. That’s our policy, but anything more is getting hard.
That’s one of my recent worries.
“……………………”
I was spacing out, thinking about the future like that.
Then—creak. A small sound comes from the door.
It’s so faint I could almost miss it.
Probably just the wind. The door is made of wood, so it’s normal for it to creak.
Besides, even if someone was planning to break in, it’s locked, so they shouldn’t be able to get inside.
No need to worry.
More importantly, I should think about tomorrow’s menu. Bread and milk for breakfast is fine, but lunch is the tricky part. I start mentally mixing ingredients in my head when—
“………………”
The sound comes again.
This time it’s not the door. It’s right next to the bed.
The next moment, I feel the blanket lift up with a rustle…
—Something’s wrong.
I finally notice the change.
Even with my eyes closed, I can tell someone’s there.
I hear ragged breathing, and the mattress sinks deep from someone’s weight pressing down on the bed.
And then, the finishing touch—a loud gulp as they swallow saliva.
“……………………”
Someone’s fingertips touch my cheek.
“Sai-sama, I won’t let you escape anymore, okay?”
The next instant, a warm breath brushes against me.
A shiver runs through me, but I realize this is bad if I let it continue, so I snap my eyes open wide.
“…Eh!?”
I grab the intruder’s arm, twist my body, and shift their center of gravity so I can push them down instead.
I climb on top, straddling them, and finally get a clear look at their face.
“……That’s way too bold.”
Golden hair spreads out across the sheets, glowing faintly in the moonlight. Her cheeks are flushed red, and her blue eyes are moist and burning with heat.
And in this orphanage, there’s only one girl with golden hair.
It’s Priere.
She’s the oldest in the orphanage and also the very first test subject I ever tried to use for human experiments.
And now that girl has suddenly broken into my room.
“What are you doing?”
I ask, sounding exasperated, but inside I’m freaking out hard.
After all, Priere is a girl who only just became an adult today, and she’s looking up at me with this dreamy, smiling face.
It’s impossible not to be shaken by an expression with that much destructive power.
“Sai-sama…”
She says my name, then slowly spreads both arms wide.
In a posture like she’s ready to accept everything, she whispers,
“Please… do your experiments on me!”
