A Brilliant Bookworm Girl. ①
“W-wow… This is amazing.”
After parting with Elena, I visited the library alone and was stunned by the sight before me.
The ceiling was wide, almost three stories high. Daylight-white lighting as far as the eye could see. The glossy floors that accentuated the beauty of the building.
The bookshelves on both the first and second floors were lined with books, and there was a large space for reading, as well as soothing, gentle music.
“Is this the school’s library…?”
I instantly knew that this was a place that had been carefully designed and built, as if a book lover was in a great position.
It was so clean, stylish, and spacious that I had nothing to complain about.
It was indeed a school where many aristocrats were enrolled.
I can’t believe I can read a book in a place like this… How exciting.
As far as I could see, there were no students using the library.
I guessed the fact it was lunch break was the reason why.
“Well, I have a feeling that if no one’s around, I can turn off the lights and the music.”
I was in the mood to go sightseeing, so I started to tour the bookshelves from the first floor.
All I saw were difficult genres.
Ideology. Society. Autobiography. Business. Industrial research, etc.
“I wonder if students read this stuff… It’s so thick it could be a blunt weapon… I wonder if literature is upstairs.”
It was inevitable that Beret did not understand which genres and where they were located.
Beret had never used this library before. In other words, he could not trace his memory.
However, he did not find it inconvenient.
Thanks to this, he was able to look around the library in a fresh way. There was not the slightest hint of boredom.
Well, second floor, second floor.
I went up the stairs in search of an entertaining book that would be easy to read.
Literature… Literature …Where’s the Literature…
Concentrating on the search to make sure that I did not miss anything.
There was no one in this library. I was the only one using it. With that in mind, I looked only at the bookshelves and neglected the one before me.
But that was a mistake.
There was one girl who was using the library at this hour.
As I finished looking at the rows of bookshelves and came around a corner, I caught a glimpse of her.
She had light blue hair tied up in a side-tail and sleepy gold eyes. A girl with a few books in each hand, wearing the school uniform and skirt.
“Huh?”
Suddenly, like a ghost, she appeared without making a sound, and a blank voice leaked out of her mouth. By the time I tried to avoid her, it was too late.
“…”
“!!”
A shock hit her body.
Perhaps because she was focused on the book she was holding, she didn’t notice the impact.
A small scream. Next, the book fell to the floor with a sound.
Neither of us had any momentum, but we both realized, “We’re going to hit each other!” The responsiveness afterwards would vary for both of us.
Caught off guard, the slender girl was hit like a balloon and fell on her butt.
“I-I’m sorry! You kay!?”
“…Y-Yes. I am fine. Sorry for my carelessness.”
Because I was in a hurry, I unconsciously took on a broken tone of voice.
She seemed to think it was a one-sided carelessness, but I was not looking around either.
“No, I was careless too. I’m really sorry…!?”
I was the one who tried to apologize to her, but I couldn’t utter an apology…
I gasped at the shocking sight before me.
She had fallen on her buttocks and her skirt was rolled up. I saw her undies through her black stockings.
Damn!
I returned to my sanity and hurriedly turned my eyes away, but… she could follow my eyes. It was easy to find out.
“Excuse me, please don’t look at me in a strange way when you see an opportunity. I’ll sue you, even though it was an accident. Beret St. Ford.”
“I-I’m so sorry.”
“Yes. Be careful next time.”
A monotonous voice. She was not ashamed of being seen in her undies… She fixed her skirt and with no expression on her face, began to carefully pick up the books that had fallen.
“I-I’ll pick it up too… Also, do you know me?”
Four of the romance novels fell to the floor. I picked up the two she hadn’t picked up yet and she asked me to hand it over to her.
“Thank you very much. Aren’t you famous?”
“Ahh, Hahaha… Well, that’s for sure.”
I felt the pressure of every word said from her sleepy eyes. The rumors seemed to have reached her ears because she after all was a student here too.
“Uhm, Are you really okay? Your body?”
“Yes. The pain has subsided.”
She stood up herself, as if to prove her words.
“More importantly, I have a question for you. Beret St. Ford.”
“What?”
A constant tone of voice. A straight face. I was facing her, unable to read anything.
“It must be lunch time right now. What is your purpose for being here at such a time? As far as I know, this is your first time using the library.”
“…Well, I’m here to read a book.”
“During lunch?”
“Yes.”
As soon as I replied, she narrowed her golden eyes and looked at me with suspicion. For the first time, I was able to get one emotion from her.
“I’m sorry, but I can’t believe it. For those of you who use the library often, it may be your first time here. And there are rumors that are not good about you.”
“W-well…”
“At a time when no one is around here. You are trying to play pranks on the books to distract yourself from your sorrow.”
It makes sense, doesn’t it?… Though she’s rude.
I had no intention of mentioning the marquis’ name in the slightest, but how could she say this so brazenly to me, when everyone around me was keeping their distance from me? She had a lot of guts.
I could honestly say that I was happy. I could find another person who would treat me as an equal.
“As far as I have come in contact with you, I don’t think that you’re the kind of person to start rumors… But If you are thinking of playing pranks on books, I will definitely not allow you to do so. The Book is the wisdom, history, and thoughts of our predecessors. It is a precious thing filled with all of that. It should be treated with great care.”
She was holding four romance novels with cute covers that were probably fictional.
The gap between her strict words was so cute that it almost made me laugh.
“I’m not playing any tricks. I was just trying to have fun. I was just trying to read for pleasure.”
“It’s a simple way to put it that way.”
She continued.
“So I will read next to you until you leave the library. I don’t have that authority, but… I guess there shouldn’t be any problem? Beret St. Ford.”
“Yes, If you’ll let me read them. Thanks.”
She must love books.
Anyone would be disgusted if a man with a bad reputation entered a room full of favorites.
“You don’t have to thank me. I am being disrespectful to you.”
“That’s because I have a bad reputation, isn’t it? So it’s not your fault, and I think I deserve it.”
“…”
“Hmm?”
I tilted my head to her silence and waited for her reply.
“… Beret St. Ford. Are you really a bad person?”
“Huh? You are asking such a thing in front of me? I think I’m a bit of a good person.”
“I see. Well, I don’t think anyone would answer ‘I’m a bad person’ in this situation.”
The same tone of voice and expressionless face. Not getting to the point.
“I’ll help you find a book for you to read. I can confidently recommend philosophy and romance novels.”
She spoke as if she wanted me to read the books she recommended. I could enjoy and read romance novels, but not philosophy.
“Well, can you recommend some romance novels?”
“Are you sure? I know you’ve been through a lot of romance, so it might not be that interesting.”
“It’ll be fine.”
“I understand. Then follow me.”
“Thank you.”
And so, I spent the rest of the day being led by a girl whose name I didn’t even know yet…
She was the only student allowed to attend classes in the library.
She was a talented and beautiful daughter of a baron’s family, a young brilliant “Bookworm” who spent all her time in the library and read books whenever she had time.
That was when I met her, during lunch break—
