After Luna Had Left.
“Hey, Beret.”
“Whoa!? You scared me.”
Just after Luna left. I turned around to see Elena with her mouth agape, as if she wanted to say something.
“Why are you surprised…? I don’t understand.”
“Of course I was surprised. You were right behind me without any sound.”
“That’s because you were admiring Miss Luna. That she’s so quiet and cute!”
“I wasn’t admiring her…”
“Hmph. It’s not that I care.”
As soon as she turned away, Elena glanced at me and let go of my hem.
“…Now she knows about you too, doesn’t she? I thought it was just me and Shea…”
“Hmm? She knows what?”
“If you are asking me because you don’t understand, I’m gonna be pissed.”
“I’m asking you because I don’t know what you are talking about.”
“Jeez….”
I guessed she could tell that I was serious. After exhaling in dismay, she fidgeted and told me.
“H-how do I put it… like she knows that you… are a ‘good guy?'”
“Ah, hahaha…. I don’t know if I’m the ‘good guy’ or not, but she gives me some book recommendations and stuff.”
“Hmmm. Well, I guess so. She also seemed to be having a lot of fun.”
“I don’t talk to people I don’t enjoy. And that’s not the case with Luna. She was just here to tell me about something she was supposed to tell.”
She mentioned the obvious by not missing the particle ‘also’, but this brought up the biggest question mark ever here.
“Haa-? From my point of view, she seemed to be having more fun than you.”
“No, no. It’s just.. Haa.. Elena, I think you’re just seeing things?”
“How could I be mistaken after I saw you and her talking to each other earlier? Or what? Are you trying to tell me that my eyes are rotten?”
“No, I’m not!”
No one would be able to say such a bad thing about the daughter of a count.
In fact, I, who did not have the faintest idea of doing such a thing, explained as I waved my hand.
“No, because it’s Luna, right?”
“Yeah?”
“How do you know she’s really enjoying herself? Again, it’s Luna we are talking about.”
“Even I don’t understand how I know that myself.”
Luna’s voice was consistent and her face expressionless. The muddled question, ‘Could you tell from it?’ seemed to get through to her, and Elena denied it as well, equally muddled.
Neither of us intended to speak ill of the other at that point.
“Well, then how can you say ‘she was having fun’…?”
“Because I’ve never seen her talk that long before. Miss Luna I know would just come to the point and then go back her way. She never chit-chatted.”
“F-for real!?”
No wonder she was so surprised.
The conversation went like this.
“I came here today because I have business with you.”
“Oh, what is it?”
“Excuse me. Before that, may I ask you something? There is something that is bothering me.”
It was Luna herself who prolonged the business. This was different from what Elena was saying.
“There are also other things. She came all the way to this classroom. The most unbelievable thing was that she agreed on your invitation to play.”
“Ahh… On second thought, that one may have been close to being forced…”
“Forced? I don’t think your character would do something like that.”
“I think it’s more a matter of family background than personality. I heard that Luna has turned down many people’s invitations, but it’s hard to turn down an invitation from me, don’t you think? I mean, I’m a legitimate son and heir to a marquis, after all.”
This title was very different from that of Luna, who was from a baroness family.
“Well… sure it will be hard to say no, but she’s not the kind of weak girl who can’t deny your invitation.”
“I’ll tell you another thing, I owe her a favor and I’ve asked her to play as one way to repay it as well, okay? So I’m sure Luna will try not to make me look bad.”
“Well, with those terms, I can’t say for sure. Honestly.”
“Right? I feel sorry about it. But I think this is her way of being considerate.”
There was a reason why I was able to guess so much myself.
After I gave some advice to Elena’s brother, Alan, she told me.
“I respect you as a human being.”
She took me up on the offer because she really thought so. It made sense to think that she was a good person.
“But, I just think she likes you a little more.”
“And why is that?”
“Because she’s been watching me every single time. If I had to use a woman’s intuition, I’d say she’s been giving me the stares.”
“What?”
“D-did you tell her something? Something to do with me. I can’t think of anything else.”
She curled her hair with her index finger as if it was a habit, and urged me on with curiosity.
“Oh, by the way, she said, ‘you are close to each other,’ to which I replied, ‘you are the closest to me.'”
“…Cl-closest…? Me?”
“Yes.”
“…”
“Ehh?”
I admitted this, and for some reason, she froze for a few seconds.
Elena, with a face that made it hard to tell what she was thinking, came back to herself with both hands on her cheeks.
She was very involved with Shea. It was not strange that she would act the way Shea did when she is in this situation.
“D-Don’t get me wrong. I’m telling you, I’m not at all happy. Hmph!”
“I-I’m sorry about that.”
Elena was right, I didn’t have many friends.
Apart from the maid of honor, Shea, there were only two people, Elena and Luna.
“B-But, no, let’s not talk about that. Going back to the argument, isn’t that the very reason she pouted over your verdict. See, it makes you feel bad, doesn’t it? If someone you care about says something like that.”
“Hahaha. I’m happy if that’s the case, but Luna is not that kind of girl. It was a woman’s intuition that told you that she was giving you that stare, wasn’t it?”
“Th-that’s true but…”
I was the one who could not believe that she glared at her with that sleepy look on her face.
Nor did she give me any such pretense when we were actually talking.
“I mean, it’s Luna, you know? She’d rather spend her time reading than falling in love.”
“Well, you do have a point, but…”
“It’s not just a theory, it’s absolutely true.”
This assurance calmed the conversation down- but was it really right?
When we first met, Luna told me, ‘I can confidently recommend philosophy and romance novels.’
Recommendation was something she could do because she read a lot.
If she read a lot, it meant that she liked to read and that she had read more books because she was interested in them.
If I had remembered those words, I would have thought differently.
