A Brilliant Bookworm Girl’s POV.③
“…Time to head back home?”
Luna muttered as she closed her book and looked at the darkening sky.
It was now past 18:00.
Normally, she would continue reading until 20:00, the time when the school dismisses completely, but after feeding Beret today, she didn’t have that much energy left.
She went downstairs carrying two books, one she had been reading and one she would read at home, under both arms.
She still had sleepy eyes, but her vision was good.
She descended without falling or stumbling, and stopped in front of the counter where the librarian was sitting.
“Ara, what’s the matter, Luna? Is there something else you want to borrow?”
“No, not at all. I’m going home today.”
“…You’re going home already?”
“Yes.”
“A-are you feeling unwell? Shall I call your family? What can I do for you…?”
The librarian was in a panic, clasping her hands together, but that was understandable.
This is the first time this had happened to her. The first time Luna left the library after school dismissal hours.
“Please don’t worry. I am fine. There is no need to contact my family.”
“R-really? If that’s the case, do you have any important business or…?”
“No, nothing important.”
“Then why… hmm?”
It was natural to ask the further question, “Then why are you going home?”
Luna explained with a straight face to the librarian, who was understandably troubled, though not as much as Shea.
“The reason is simple. My food was stolen.”
“Wh!? That’s a big deal! I have to contact the school right away…”
“…”
The librarian lost her cool even more when she heard that it was the work of a thief. Looking at the situation as if Luna were a statue, she spoke up before the librarian could do anything.
“Excuse me. It was a joke.”
“EHh? It’s a joke!?”
“Yes. Nothing was stolen.”
“Oh, my goodness… I see. I’m sorry, I panicked. I’m glad to hear that.”
The librarian breathed a huge sigh of relief after the revelation.
Luna’s voice was always constant. She was expressionless.
She had a personality that made jokes more believable.
“Were you surprised?”
“Of course I was. Luna, you eat lunch in the librarian’s office, so I thought maybe they took some important materials from the library with them.”
“Oh… I am really sorry for the terrible joke. I hadn’t even thought about that. I’m going to stop doing things I’m not used to doing.”
“Don’t worry about it. Nothing happened after all.”
Luna bowed her head with a default straight face.
To those who did not know her, she did not look remorseful.
In fact, she had created such misunderstandings before. But if she didn’t feel sorry, she didn’t bow her head.
The librarian knew this. They had a good relationship because she got the point.
“I’m sure… something good has happened to you, Luna.”
“How did you know? I didn’t tell you anything.”
“You said earlier, ‘it’s not what you’re used to doing.’ You’re right, and that’s the first joke I’ve ever heard from you.”
“…That’s all there is to it, huh? I’m kind of embarrassed. It seems I’m the one who’s excited.”
If you named someone who had a different facial expression from what she said, Luna would definitely be the first to shine. So much so that Luna was in an iron mask, but the librarian pinched her as if she had guessed everything.
“I bet you were happy, weren’t you?”
“…I won’t answer because the librarian is grinning at me.”
“Oh, my goodness… Now your eyes are swimming. You are so unusual today.”
The librarian was not trying to be mean, saying what she was feeling, but that was what was most damaging to Luna.
“…N-No more… I won’t tell the librarian anymore.”
“Ehhh, If you pulled me that far, I’d be curious to know. The thing that made you happy.”
“Please don’t raise your voice. Please work quickly.”
Instead of turning her head to look away, Luna moved her feet and turned her slender back to the librarian and stopped facing the librarian, hiding her face in dissatisfaction.
No matter what was said, she would not answer. The librarian tried to hang on to her, who showed such a strong posture.
At such a timing – a reserved voice came from the side to give Luna a helping hand.
“Excuse me if you are busy with something but…”
“Oh, no. I am so sorry. May I help you?”
A male student with beautiful red hair inquired, and the librarian immediately turned on the librarian switch.
“Well, which section of Business Administration is located at…?”
“Business Administration. If it’s Business Administration, it’s on the first floor, third row from the left.”
“Okay. Thank you very much for your kindness.”
The student bowed with sophistication and headed for the corner at a brisk pace.
“Hoho …Now he was kind of classy, wasn’t he?”
After the guidance was over, the librarian called out again to Luna nearby, and the specifics of the person the librarian was talking to immediately came to light.
“It’s only natural. He is the younger brother of the Countess Elena Leclerc.”
“Oh, my, I see why he smelled of jasmine.”
One of the characteristics of the Leclerc family was also the perfume of jasmine.
Watching his back as he moved away, Luna dropped the subject.
“Librarian-san. It seemed to me that he was being pushed into a corner, but is he going to be okay? If he’s going to use the library at this time, he must be planning to stay there until the night.”
“The Leclerc family has made great strides in the food and beverage business, so perhaps that’s why he’s been given the responsibility to manage.”
“That’s a strong possibility.”
“Why don’t you lend him your wisdom? Luna-san.”
“Don’t be absurd. Management is a business where wisdom gained from experience is more useful than knowledge from books. I can’t give him any advice, and I can’t take responsibility if what I say leads to failure.”
“It’s a difficult problem, isn’t it?”
“Yes. Hopefully he can work this out.”
There was no flattery in what she said.
As if to prove it, she kept looking at him until she could no longer see him in her sleepy eyes.
“Well then, I shall proceed to prepare for my return home… Librarian-san. May I ask you to pick out some highly rated management books? I’ll borrow a few.”
“Fufu~. You’re very kind, Luna-san.”
“No, I’m not. I just wanted to look through it a little. I know I said those things, but it’s important to have knowledge.”
“I’ll leave it at that.”
“…”
She tried to be ignorant, but it was inevitable that she would be found out in this process.
“Well, while you’re at it, check out the business administration books… Oh, before you go into the librarian’s office, Luna. What was that thing you were excited about-“
“Again with that? I won’t tell you. I’m not excited about it.”
Luna, who had said all that to the end, went into the librarian’s room to get her belongings.
