- Chapter 54: The Great Tower of Nadinalezre - Part 2
“What are they doing!” Ryuujo-sama exclaimed angrily while gazing at a crystal, likely showing the relentless progress of the four intruders.
There have been hunters with absurd blessings who have attacked before, but Hazel’s unique skill seemed to surpass those in terms of convenience, perhaps because it was not a power given by the selfish gods.
The high defensive capability was the worst part for us. The abundant traps, a dungeon master’s method to defeat stronger foes, were almost ineffective against her. When I first heard about her ability, I thought, “What in the world is that?”
Ryuujo-sama might look in his twenties, but he’s nearly 300 years old. If he can’t even find a solution, the dungeon is in dire. But for me, Ryuujo-sama’s predicament is an opportunity. I’m relieved my assessment wasn’t wrong so far.
However, Ryuujo-sama suddenly turned to me, and I quickly adopted a subservient posture. Even in my wheelchair, I bowed my head like a recruit awaiting orders, fearing I might be converted into DP for a trap at this critical moment.
I’ve enhanced my value as a monster by obtaining blessings from gods, thinking it would reduce my chances of being decomposed for DP. But what Ryuujo-sama said next was completely unexpected.
“…This dungeon is finished. I’ll release you from our contract with magic. You are to escape and continue the work to revive her.”
Release from the contract? That was totally off my radar. Too good to be true.
(Really? Why would he do that?)
Why would I, now free, continue reviving the woman he loved? Is he delusional enough to completely trust me, or has he gone mad, thinking I’m still his absolute servant?
However, after some thought, I decided to reject the offer.
“Isn’t your life in danger, Ryuujo-sama?”
Even though it seemed like a lucky break, accepting it too easily could make me seem untrustworthy and lead to my elimination. I decided crossing a risky bridge was unnecessary since I would win anyway.
“I’ve already undone it. You will be teleported to the entrance now. Escape without being detected.”
“…What?”
I realized then that the magical flow from Ryuujo-sama had stopped, a swift decision that made me question the point of all my scheming.
“If your research succeeds and she… Trana comes back to life, tell her, ‘It’s too late now, but I’m sorry for pretending not to notice.'”
I didn’t need to relay this message. I knew what troubled him and why he wanted to resurrect Trana Spoonbender, having heard it countless times over 200 years.
He had become so deranged while convincing himself of these things.
“Yes, yes. Of course. But I’m sorry, I cannot accept that message.”
Thump. Jacqueline punched Ryuujo’s head with her fist clenched cutely. Her monster strength, harder than iron, easily drew blood from him, making him crumble.
“Gah! What are you doing!”
“Summon. Dungeon Core.”
As if it was planned, Jacqueline then summoned another dungeon core.
This core was stolen and contractually bound to her by one of the many dungeon masters she had hunted as a dungeon slayer.
“Wait, what are you doing!”
Ignoring Ryuujo’s protest, Jacqueline merged the fully matured core of the “Great Tower of Nadinalezre” with her own dungeon’s core. The absorption of one dungeon core by another signified defeat.
It was the end of the 300-year history of the “Great Tower of Nadinalezre,” but the tower itself had not yet fallen.
She never expected to be released from the contract before Wito and his group reached the core room. Relieved at the cores’ successful fusion, she took a deep breath.
“Now, this dungeon is mine.”
Like Wito’s group taking over the dungeon on Grabsdread Island, seizing the core allowed her to use the old dungeon site for a new dungeon. Jacqueline had made the Great Tower of Nadinalezre her own.
“I knew betrayal was a possibility. Take over if you must. But please, don’t forget to revive Trana. Even if it takes thousands of years.”
That was everything for Ryuujo. Defeated as a dungeon master, he was now just an ordinary man, desperately squeezing out these words.
“Hah. Takeover, Ryuujo-sama… Do you think I want to be cursed with the boring job of a dungeon master?”
Jacqueline, who had been watching for 200 years, expertly manipulated the core. Ryuujo realized from her actions that her betrayal had been a long-term plan.
“Let me tell you. I was the one who killed Trana.”
“What?”
While Ryuujo was stunned, Jacqueline converted all the monsters inhabiting the Great Tower of Nadinalezre into DP. None of them could have defeated Wito’s group anyway.
Jacqueline Spoonbender had things she had to do, even if it meant decomposing her colleagues she had spent years with.
“If you want to know more, accept the contract. Ryuujo-sama. From now on, you’ll fight those intruders as a dungeon monster.”
