- Chapter 20: Crawler Game, Part 1 (Rozina's POV)
“Dedicating this sky to my king… Lord Wit doesn’t sound bad at all.”
Feeling elated on my rare leisure flight, I found myself thinking so. Reflecting, today was the first time I’d flown so freely despite having wings.
I always slept inside the dungeon because my gigantic frame, spanning 15 meters, made me an easy target in the forest. A tree, and a large swarm of lurking Halk spiders would ambush immediately. By the king’s command, I couldn’t retaliate.
So, I stayed inside the dungeon, constantly watching the king. Just beholding His Majesty’s figure was more than enough entertainment. Moreover, the jail had flying facilities bestowed upon me by the king. That was plenty as long as I could keep my wings from rusting with flight training. Besides, the “Labyrinth of Ragnell” that the king created was far more beautiful than the outside world.
…But now, what if I was allowed to fight? Under this vast sky, none can match me. I could fend off any small fries attacking with just a tilt of my body.
At that moment, while pleasantly gazing below, my vision was enveloped in a scarlet light… I was startled momentarily but realized it was Delilah’s blessing. It looked like a wildfire, but her magic isn’t exactly of the fire attribute, just hot, so there should be no spread.
Seeing this, Rosarosa became jubilant. However, her joy wasn’t innocent delight from the height and light but a more twisted, mischievous pleasure.
“Look, look! The forest is all red. Serves them right! It’s all because they don’t love Rosarosa.”
Rosarosa, made of vines, nimbly bounced around. She doesn’t weigh much, but doesn’t she know any restraint?
“… Isn’t this bad? The towns around can see this light.”
She, resembling a badger and standing on her hind legs, surveyed the entire forest. She’s the kind of fanatic who deems obeying the king’s words right, so she came along once she got the king’s permission.
However, I’ve never seen Delilah’s magic emit such intense light. There are too many Halk spiders, or Delilah’s lost her temper… But wasn’t her unique skill stronger when she didn’t express her emotions?
“With this light, perhaps those spiders have been annihilated.”
Since ranking up to D rank and acquiring this large body, I’ve rarely been outside, so I felt nothing more than a touch of nostalgia.
The red light seemed far from the cruelty one would imagine upon hearing, “exterminating a single species from a forest.”
It wasn’t that it was beautiful either. It felt akin to watching the flame of an insect-repellent coil.
There was no pity. However, for those who didn’t possess the intellect to serve the world’s greatest king, there was sympathy.
…That light didn’t last for very long.
“Ah, it’s subsided. If the forest only shone bright red for about five seconds, it should be fine, right?”
Rosarosa muttered with a highly optimistic tone.
Knowing her, she’s probably thinking how delicious it’d be if the dungeon’s existence were exposed due to someone else’s mistake without her bearing any responsibility. Despite knowing how much the king agonizes each time he kills a monster that invades the dungeon.
But there’s no use arguing with her. After all, our fundamental approaches to serving the king differ.
I spotted a town nearby as I enjoyed the horizon from high above.
Was it called “Bordlitta,” according to Miss Jacqueline? It would be best if multiple people didn’t see that light. The crimson light wouldn’t have reached them since it was still daylight.
“Alright! Let’s do our best not to be outdone!”
I couldn’t see Rosarosa, who was riding on my back, but she was probably thrilled with our comrades’ success. But what she said was absurd. Once her unique skill activates, there’s no need to exert effort.
“No, Rosarosa. You should activate your unique skill from up here.”
At my words, Rosarosa laughed joyfully.
“That’d be boring! I could eradicate them all, but then Saryu-chan wouldn’t get a chance to fight, right? That’s why I want to play a little game.”
Skillfully extending her body to my line of sight, Rosarosa began puppeteering a bear doll she’d received from the king, moving it like a vine marionette. It wasn’t enjoyable for me during the flight.
“A game, you say?”
However, Saryu didn’t react to Rosarosa’s whimsical behavior and continued the conversation.
… She’s always been so profound. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say she’s indifferent because if she were earnest, she would have retorted.
In response to Saryu’s question, Rosarosa enthusiastically replied, “If Rosarosa-chan activates her unique skill, it’s all over just like that… But, without some incentive, the enemies will just run away from strong Saryu-chan, right? That’s why I want to set up a game that would entice all the Onibirds to participate.”
The statement could be taken as undermining Saryu, implying that without her setup, Saryu wouldn’t be able to shine.
Yet, to such a statement, Saryu said, “Thank you,” without hesitation. I couldn’t help but interject, “Hey, Saryu! You are the king’s warrior. Are you wonderful with fighting in a situation where, in essence, the enemy is helpless?”
Saryu constantly challenges us to mock battles and is a battle enthusiast. Among the personal lessons from the king, she was the only one who attended combat lectures. That’s why everyone recognized her as the strongest warrior in the dungeon.
It was surprising to see someone like Saryu willing to engage in combat against a weaker opponent in such an overwhelmingly advantageous situation, which could be seen as unfair.
However, I realized that I might not truly understand Saryu, or perhaps I didn’t understand the nature of martial arts.
“I am not a knight but a martial artist. After having a decent battle, I don’t mind if Rosarosa-san uses her skill,” she said. This meant that once she was satisfied with the fight, she would leave the finishing blow to someone else – words one wouldn’t expect from a warrior.
…One thing I realized after venturing outside was that she’s more of a researcher, wanting to perfect the “strongest way of fighting” rather than a mere warrior. That was probably the path she chose after learning martial arts from the king.
“Lol. That’s not a battle but an experiment. …Oh, this area is said to be the Onibirds’ nest,” Rosarosa mentioned as she spread out the map she had swiped from Margarita.
“It’s closer than I thought. Alright, let’s descend.”
Despite my lack of interest in Rosarosa’s game or the annihilation campaign, I wanted to drop them off and head straight back.
…Flying over the nest, it was only natural that Onibirds would surround us.
The king said these creatures were like “vultures with faces of wrathful deities.” The king mentioned that vultures on Earth scavenge for carcasses. In this world, these creatures do the same, making them our natural competitors for food.
As I searched for a place to land for the two on my back, one of the Onibirds shouted, “Do you know what that red light is about?” However, none of us responded.
“C’mon, let’s go down together. The fun is just about to start! It seems like I’ve been bossing Logina-chan around!”
Rosarosa spoke in a playful tone. I’m impressed she can act so childishly, especially with her vine-like body.
“Hey! Don’t ignore me. Ugh!”
Losing patience, I crushed the body of the attacking Onibird. I didn’t want to go outside. They underestimated me since I hadn’t retaliated before and were quick to attack. It’s such a hassle.
Suddenly, all the Onibirds around us let out shocked cries. Following that echoes of Onibird calls emanated from the forest.
The signal for the battle to commence.
The moment the atmosphere shifted, Rosarosa began her chant without hesitation.
“「Aiwanabonchu」, 「Yuashatashata」, 「The second confession bears your name」. My little Venoms, do your best!”
“Agaaaaaa!”
As Rosarosa finished her short chant, the Onibirds began to falter and fall, groaning in pain.
The battle ended so quickly. See, I didn’t even need to use my power.
Moreover, Rosarosa, for the sake of the so-called “game,” had been holding back her skill power after her chant.
“…Rosarosa, explain the game.”
Saryu said with a sharp look in her eyes. Her voice was devoid of excitement for someone so curious about the game; instead, it was filled with a calm, murderous intent. I wondered how she could be so keen on killing in such a favorable situation, and perhaps it was a technique she received from the king.
Hearing her words, Rosarosa gleefully brought out a wrapped box as if she had been waiting for this moment. As for what was inside, it remained unknown.
“Ta-da! It’s called the ‘Crowler Game’. We bury the antidote in a corpse, and they scavenge for it while trying to escape from us! We’ll get our revenge for what was done to Rosarosa and the others!”
“How simplistic.” “It’s quite straightforward, isn’t it?”
“How dare you!”
However, in reality, she wasn’t that concerned about revenge.
“I think I’m good now. Do as you please from here.”
I felt tired after being outside for the first time in a while. I’m also getting sleepy.
At that moment, “Margarita has told us that a village of Onibirds has a rare item.”
Rosarosa whispered. Then she added, “Let’s decide that the person who hunts the most in the game can offer that item to Onii-chan.”
A unique monster, the Dragon of the Garbage Mountain. Hedam’s true nature is itching.
Dragons, by nature, gather and hoard treasures.
I felt as though my blood was boiling.
“Hmph.”
And so, not liking being led on by Rosarosa, I landed in the center of the Onibirds’ territory.
“Kyaa! So easy!”
As I exerted some speed for at least a small retaliation, Rosarosa cheerfully let out a squeal.
