- Chapter 35/36 - Evacuation Drill/ What Aiz Saw
Boss and the alien remained in the now empty room as the two left.
“So, what should I do?” the alien asked Boss.
“Well, for starters, could you ensure everyone is watched over so that, just in case, no one dies?” Boss replied.
“Got it,” said the alien, looking into Boss’s memories.
Seeing the past evacuation drills, the alien had a slightly strained smile.
“Ahh, this seems like it’s going to be tough.”
Boss quietly nodded and began to prepare.
This was an evacuation drill within the evil organization.
And what does “evacuation” mean in this organization?
First and foremost, what must be protected during an evacuation drill is life.
And what is “life” within this organization?
It is Boss.
This is the unanimous consensus among all members.
Everyone believes that without Boss, the organization cannot function, and they all place their complete trust in Boss.
And so, Boss thinks.
When a crisis looms over the organization,
For instance, when attacked by another organization or an unknown creature, Boss should fight first.
That is why Boss is trusted.
And back to the topic of the evacuation drill.
In other words, evacuation means ensuring Boss survives the battle for this organization.
And how do you train for that?
The answer is simple: The boss must engage in combat against many.
This logic defines the organization’s evacuation drill as a no-holds-barred battle between Boss and the members.
The drill is complete when Boss starts from the rooftop and escapes the hideout through the front entrance.
There have been no fatalities in the past, but it is undoubtedly painful for both Boss and the members.
However, the gains from this training are significant, which is why it is considered a major event within the organization.
Boss took his position on the rooftop, cracking his knuckles.
Though it is a training exercise to protect everyone’s lives in times of emergency and to ensure the organization’s survival, as the leader of the organization, losing is not an option.
Every evacuation drill, Boss is driven by such thoughts.
The starting bell rang.
Boss placed his hand on the rooftop door.
Below, he could see several members in black suits with serious expressions.
Pleased by their gazes, Boss rushed down the stairs and plunged into the black-clad crowd.
◆
The members of the evil organization faced the evacuation drill with unparalleled resolve.
Boss placed his hand on the rooftop door, signaling the start of the evacuation drill.
Then, the story takes a step back in time.
After escaping from a battle involving aliens, a subordinate, and a magical girl of light, Aiz and her childhood friend, who was a hostage, were walking through a dimly lit underground passage.
Having received his duty through telepathy from an alien, Aiz matched her pace to that of the hostage’s childhood friend.
“I guess this means I can’t give Subordinate-chan Akkun’s old photo after all.”
The hostage’s childhood friend muttered in disappointment. Picking up on his feelings, Aiz spoke up.
“Do you have any photos left in your smartphone? If possible, you could give me your email address, and I could send the photos to you later.”
Aiz offered with a kind smile.
“That’s right!” The hostage’s childhood friend brightened up.
“I wonder if I have any photos of Akkun…”
He took out his smartphone and started searching through the album. However, as expected from someone who had been friends with Boss for a long time, he didn’t have any photos related to Boss.
“Then, could I ask you to register your email address?”
The childhood friend asked Aiz.
Aiz happily agreed and registered the email address.
“You can contact me anytime, okay? Ehehe,” the childhood friend said to Aiz with a laugh.
Aiz blushed slightly and replied, “Thank you.”
After that, the hostage’s childhood friend shared stories about Boss from the past, and Aiz shared her background and tales of the evil organization.
Both enjoyed a pleasant time together until they finally arrived at the exit of the underground passage.
“Then, Aiz-chan, thank you for everything.”
The childhood friend thanked Aiz and said he would send Akkun’s photos.
“It was fun for me as well,” Aiz replied.
“Thank you.” And with that, the childhood friend waved goodbye and stepped into the bright outside world.
Aiz waved back until he was out of sight, feeling slightly sad.
Once the childhood friend was gone, Aiz turned back towards the underground passage to return to the hideout, her steps slightly slower than usual.
Walking through the long underground passage, she returned to the hideout. However, something was off.
It was too quiet. While the hideout was usually quiet, the absence of any noise was unusual.
Feeling something was amiss, Aiz immediately went to look for Boss, fearing that something bad might have happened to the hideout.
Deciding to seek help from the doctor in the worst-case scenario, Aiz searched the hideout.
But there was no one to be found.
This was becoming increasingly alarming. Feeling panicked, Aiz rushed outside, only to be met with an astonishing sight.
Everyone from the hideout was there.
However, only a few were standing.
The people in black suits were all lying down, uniformly defeated.
And in the center of this fallen group was Boss, their protectee.
Boss was riding on a gentle-looking red magical girl as if they were playing a game of “horsey.”
Supporting Boss with a gentle expression was a subordinate.
Above them, amid cloudy skies, a bright blue circle of clear sky expanded right above them.
Pointing to this circular patch of blue was an alien, who quietly closed his eyes with a satisfied expression.
Unable to hold back, Aiz exclaimed,
“What on earth is going on here?!?!”
