Chapter 26 – Even If I Like You, I Won’t Tell You How I Feel
At 23:00, I decided it was time to go to bed and put down the futon. The house is large and has many rooms, so each person has a room. It was quiet in my room.
I got under the covers and lay down to sleep, and then I heard voices coming from behind the sliding door.
“Yuuto-kun, are you awake?”
“Mina-san?”
I was lying down, but I got up and opened the sliding door. There was Mina-san wearing a white t-shirt and knee-length trousers. When I looked at Mina-san, I noticed something.
“Mina-san, you’re wearing glasses…”
“Ah, yeah. I’m usually in contact. Anyway, can we chat more?”
“I don’t mind, but…here?”
“It’s not nice to stand and talk, so let’s talk on the porch.”
***
Slowly, without making a sound of footsteps, Mina-san and I moved to the porch and sat down side by side. When I looked at Mina-san next to me, she looked a little cold.
I gently draped my own thin cardigan over Mina-san’s shoulders.
“Eh…?”
“You’ll catch a cold if you’re dressed that thin.”
“T-Thanks…”
Mina-san looked happy and clutched the cardigan tightly in her hands so that it wouldn’t fall off her shoulders. We were silent for a while, but Mina-san finally broke the silence.
“Yuuto-kun, when I heard that…Yuuto-kun was going on a date with Shirai-senpai, I hated it so much.”
Mina-san told me how she really felt, and I realized that she wasn’t trying to tease me when she said she didn’t want me to go.
That wasn’t to tease me, that was Mina-san’s real wish… I vaguely knew back then, but at the time, I pretended not to notice.
“I know myself that this is jealousy. But I’m Yuuto-kun’s sister and I shouldn’t have asked him not to go, right? I’m sorry, I bothered you…”
“Jealousy… Then, Mina-san—”
I was about to say the next word, but Mina put her index finger on my lips.
“Don’t say anything else… I’m not saying this because I want to tell Yuuto-kun how I feel. I told you before, didn’t I? I said I wouldn’t fall for you. Even if I fell in love with you, I would never tell you how I feel.”
I couldn’t say anything to Mina-san’s clear declaration. And I felt the same way as her.
“Mina-san and I think very similarly. I’m the same way… Even if I like Mina-san, I’m not going to tell her how I feel.”
The reason is probably the same.
Because me and Mina-san are ‘family’.
***
“It’s difficult to love someone. Just because you’re jealous, you don’t know if it’s romantic jealousy or not. The more you get to know someone, the more possessive you become of them, and the more you hate yourself for letting it get the best of you.”
It’s not only romantic feelings that you want only for yourself. It’s also about friends. If someone you are interested in is having more fun with someone other than you, you will be jealous.
“I don’t know myself if I’m jealous as a friend or jealous because I like you. But it doesn’t matter which one it is. I’m sure I like you, but I’ve decided not to tell you, so please continue to be my brother, Yuuto-kun.”
“Yes, of course. I’m asking you too. I want you to continue to be my sister.”
“Yeah, I’m going to do that without being asked.”
On this day, at this moment, it felt like an invisible line was drawn between me and Mina-san. But that’s okay…
“Ah, by the way, I saw photos of Yuuto-kun when he was little. He was so cute.”
“Eh…? You saw?”
Mina-san nodded her head when I asked her that.
Aimi-san, when did you show her?
All day today, I’ve been watching to see when Aimi-san would show Mina-san the photos.
“I exchanged contact details with Aimi-san and she sent me the photos.”
If she sent it via phone, Aimi-san could show it to Mina-san without having to be in contact with her.
“Ah, seriously~, do you really hate it when people look at you like that? You were so cute when you were little. In exchange for seeing yours, I’ll send you pictures of me when I was little next time.”
“I never said I wanted to see it.”
“But you want to see them, don’t you?”
Next to me, Mina-san took her phone out of her trouser pocket and started looking at pictures. Then, as if remembering something, she searched for something on her smartphone and showed me the screen of her smartphone.
“This one, do you want to go with me? It’s a festival that’s happening just when we get back home, but all my friends already have their own plans and can’t make it. So, Yuuto-kun, how about it?”
Most of Mina-san’s friends are her close friends. I doubt for a moment that all of them had plans, but Mina-san was smiling and waiting for my reply.
“Okay.”
“Yay! If we’re going together, let’s stay until the fireworks. Last year I didn’t get to see them because of all the things that happened, so I’m determined to see them this year.”
I was curious about all that stuff, but felt like I shouldn’t go into it, so I didn’t ask.
I don’t think I’ve seen fireworks since I was little.
“I’m looking forward to seeing you in your yukata, Mina-san.”
“Wha… H-How did you know I was going to wear it?”
Mina-san was surprised at my comment and tried hard to remember if she had said it before. Seeing her like that, I couldn’t help but laugh.
“Well… When you were searching on your phone, I saw the search history and it said, ‘Do boys like yuka—”
“I didn’t search for those kinds of things!”
Even though I haven’t said it all the way through yet, Mina-san interrupted me. Well, it was in her search history, so it’s impossible that she didn’t search for it. Well, let’s just say I’m wrong here.
