Chapter 17 – Study Session with Mina-san
On June 25th, one week before the regular school examinations, after school, Mina and I were at a family restaurant on our way home from school.
On the desk were drinks, junk food ordered at random and, of course, study materials. Textbooks and notebooks were laid out. Yes, just laid out… The textbooks and notebooks are closed, not opened.
I stopped eating and drinking, opened my notebook and picked up a mechanical pencil. Then I called out to Mina-san, who was sitting next to me eating what was ordered.
“Mina-san, it’s time to do it.”
“Hmm?”
Don’t answer while you’re eating potato fries!
The reason why we decided to have the study group here goes back to before I left for school this morning.
As I was eating breakfast, Mina-san spoke to me from next to me.
“Yuuto-kun, the test is coming up, so let’s have a study session at a family restaurant. We can drop by after school.”
Why a family restaurant?
It’s better to study at home.
“I’d rather not since it’s more efficient to do it at home. If you want to go, why don’t you invite a friend?”
“Eh~, isn’t it fine? It’s a request from your cute little sister.”
Probably Mina-san asked me out because she felt more comfortable with me. Mina-san put her hands together, said please and looked up at me.
“By the way, why in a family restaurant?”
“Ah, it’s been a wish of mine…to study at a family restaurant after school with someone…”
“Heh…”
When she said that while her face turned bright red, I resumed eating with a disinterested look.
“What do you mean, ‘heh’? You asked, so I answered. Ah! If you come, I will teach you how to study since I’m number 1 in my grade~… Wait, Yuuto-kun!?”
Mina-san was surprised when I suddenly bowed to her.
“Mina-san, let’s have a study session at a family restaurant after school.”
At that time, I was tempted by her words that she would teach me to study.
And back to the situation at hand…
“Mina-san, we didn’t come here to eat, did we? You were the one who asked me to have a study session.”
Why do I almost forget my purpose when I’m with Mina-san? It was the same when we went to the mall to buy my dad’s birthday present… We almost forgot our original purpose and went straight to buying it in the end.
“Yes, yes, I know. But first, these fries are delicious, you know? Here, ahnn.”
Mina-san brought a fry to my mouth.
No, no, no, just let me eat normally.
When I tried to reach for the fry in Mina-san’s hand to eat them myself, they were snatched away.
“No can do, Yuuto-kun. Here, let’s try it one more time.”
Apparently eating by myself is a no-no.
Then I chose the option not to eat instead…
I gave up on eating the fries… (I don’t want to eat them in the first place) and started studying.
Mina-san saw me and forced herself to sit next to me, even though we were facing each other. As soon as she sat down, she grabbed me by the shoulders.
“It’s not every day you get to have a beautiful girl like me to feed you. Are you sure?”
“Uh, yeah, I don’t mind.”
It’s almost painful to hear her call herself a beautiful girl.
“You can’t say that, okay! Look, look~ your cute sister is trying her best~”
Trying her best at what!?
Before I knew it, Mina-san had wrapped her hand that wasn’t holding the fries around my arm and was clinging to me.
I have a good poker face, but when she comes this close to me, I’m going to break down.
I’ve been getting glances from the other customers, so I’ll get this over with as soon as possible…
“Okay.”
“Nnn, then, here you go.”
The potato fry entered my mouth.
It’s very salty and spicy…
“How do you like it?” Mina-san said as she was smiling and waiting for my feedback.
“Mmm, it was delicious…”
“You’re so stiff… Now, let’s have a study session.”
Mina-san, who had moved away from me and sat back down opposite me, pulled out her study materials from her bag.
“What are you good at, Yuuto-kun, liberal arts? Or perhaps science?”
“Liberal arts, I guess.”
“Then, we’re the same. I’m not good at science~”
“Heh, so you’re not good at science… EH!?!?”
I was surprised because I didn’t think Mina-san was bad at science.
“Is it such a surprise?”
“Well, Mina-san seems to be good at science, so I tried to get her to teach me how to study, but if we’re good at the same thing, what’s the point?”
After hearing my words, Mina-san was taken aback.
“Ah, I guess you’re right. But don’t worry! Even if I’m not good at it, I can still get a 90.”
Yes, she’s first in the grade… Even if she’s not good at some subjects, she got good marks.
“Well, I look forward to working with you.”
“Yes, you can call me Mina-sensei today.”
I thought this was just a daily practice for character building, so I didn’t go into anything.
“I’d like to know about this problem right away. I’ve got it up to the formula, but I don’t know what to do from there.”
“Oh this… Hey, it’s hard to teach in front of you, so can I come next to you?”
“Hmm? Yeah, it’s definitely too far away. You can come next to me, but don’t stick to me like you did before, okay?”
“I wouldn’t do that. Seeing couples flirting while studying is frustrating.”
I’ve been thinking lately…
Mina-san distinguishes between her true self and herself when she’s acting spoiled with me. I get scared when she keeps changing herself around like this.
“Mina-san, don’t you have a boyfriend? You seem to get a lot of confessions…”
“I don’t need a boyfriend. Boys only look at me for my looks, and they’re all jerks.”
While saying that, Mina-san sat next to me with nothing but a mechanical pencil.
Even though I was a boy, Mina said what she wanted to say without worrying about it.
“Mina-san, aren’t you doing your hair and wearing perfume like that because you want to be popular?”
“I’m not doing it to be popular. It’s all for me. I’ve had a few guys confess their feelings for me, but most of them have ulterior motives. I don’t think I want to date people like that.”
“Is that so? I thought you were trying to get guys to fall for you.”
In fact, Mina-san is the most popular girl in our year. Looking at her personality and appearance, there’s nothing wrong with her, so there are probably many people who would want to date her.
“I’m not doing it for that. They just like me on their own. What about you, Yuuto-kun? Which me do you prefer?”
“I like the real Mina-san, of course.”
“…Alright, that’s the end of the chit-chat! You said you didn’t understand this problem, right? This here—”
I think there was a strange pause, but Mina-san looked happy and took the notebook from me and started looking at the problems. I wonder if this was her way of hiding her embarrassment.
