Chapter 64: Wife Moves (Friday)
Monday night, 9 p.m., at Snack Bar “The Witch’s Cauldron.”
Under the soft flicker of the counter’s lights, Izolde downed a glass of amber liquid in one gulp.
Tears glistened in her eyes, her voice hoarse.
“No way, why, why does it have to be like this?
Of all things, a pair like Leviathan and Morgadia…!”
“Ugh, ugh, ugh… What did I do wrong?”
The bar was filled with the quiet stillness of a weekday.
“Mama, another round!”
“Take it easy, alright?”
Izolde’s voice trembled as she confessed.
“Mama, I’m… I’m going to die on Saturday.
So let me at least go out on my own terms, please.”
Mama let out a heavy sigh, her face etched with resignation.
“Fine. But can you keep what’s about to happen an absolute secret?”
“You got a plan?” Izolde asked.
“I’ll read your fortune. A way to survive this battle.”
Mama’s voice held no trace of jest. She laid out her conditions.
“Two things. First, don’t tell anyone what I reveal in this reading. Don’t even mention ‘Mama’s fortune-telling.’
Second, you must follow what the reading shows. If you don’t, you won’t make it back alive.”
Izolde extended a trembling hand and nodded firmly.
“Yeah, Mama. Thank you. I’ll follow it, I swear.”

Friday morning.
“Come on~ Time to get up already,” Kazuto’s body was shaken, and he rubbed his eyes.
“Oh… good morning.”
“Good morning. Breakfast’s ready,” Towa said.
Aki, in her school uniform and apron, was in full-on morning housewife mode without a hint of hesitation.
Sitting at the table, the usual breakfast awaited: rice, miso soup, tamagoyaki, and natto.
“Let’s eat~”
“Let’s eat~”
Then Towa swept in, casually opening the Ienari household’s fridge.
“The fridge only has A-type, huh?” she said, grabbing a blood donation pack and slurping it through a straw.
An awkward silence settled over the morning table.
Aki spoke without pausing her miso soup sipping.
“The bento’s cooling down now. Pack it up and take it yourself. Don’t forget.”
“Oh, thanks,” Kazuto replied.
“…” Towa stayed silent.
Morning chatter was brief, and the three headed to school as usual.

Time passed—after school.
The sound of the Ienari household’s front door opening echoed.
“Oh, you’re back~ Welcome home~” Aki’s voice called from inside.
“Yeah, I’m home~” Kazuto replied, as always.
On the table was tonight’s dinner: rice, miso soup, tonkatsu, and a vegetable salad.
They clapped their hands together, saying “Let’s eat” in perfect sync.
These simple meals had become their “normal.”
“Mom’s coming back tomorrow, huh? It’s been fun, like we’re newlyweds. Even if I’m sleep-deprived,” Kazuto reminisced.
“Yeah. But this life will go on. I’ll make sure of it,” Aki declared, puffing out her chest. “Listen, tomorrow we might be enemies or allies, but I’ll protect you no matter what. I won’t let you die. And we’ll keep this life going. That’s a promise.”
“Sure. It’s been fun, all things considered. I won’t hold a grudge, so do what you want,” Kazuto replied.
During their exchange, a distant memory flickered somewhere deep—
It felt like Samael had laughed suddenly.
“It’s been fun, all things considered. Heh, even if you kill me and turn me in, I’m fine with it. If it’s you.”
That voice echoed in Aki’s heart.
(Samael was like this too, heh.) Aki smiled faintly.
“Yeah, if I’m gonna die, I’d rather it be with you. Let’s do it,” she added candidly.
A cold voice cut in from behind—Mio’s.
“Don’t fall for it.”
Aki turned around.
“Hah, me, deceive him? Betray my own family?” she snapped, her voice laced with anger.
“You can’t trust someone who’s coming to kill you tomorrow, can you?” Mio retorted.
“Don’t mess with me! If Kazuto dies, I’m ready to die too!!” Aki shot back.
“Is that so? All you care about is Samael, isn’t it?” Mio countered.
“No, you’re wrong. Wanna settle this right now instead of tomorrow?” Aki taunted.
“Fine by me. I don’t feel like losing,” Mio replied.
“Stop it!!” Kazuto shouted, the air tensing for a moment.
“That’s enough. I’m going somewhere until tomorrow. If you fight, I won’t show up at the battlefield.
And don’t follow me. I want to be alone today.”
With that, he stormed out.
Kazuto just walked. Trying not to think, thinking of nothing.
His feet carried him toward the bustling district, as if drawn by something.
As night approached, something in his chest began to stir.
The time was nearing 9 p.m.
