Chapter 39
“The teachers really went all out for the last round, huh? Pairing us, the male bodyguards, like this—dropping our disguises.”
“Do male bodyguards have to wear that special uniform until graduation?”
“Yeah. Since I plan to take the exam under the male bodyguard program, I’ll be sticking with this uniform and role… and probably the disguise, too, until the very end.”
“I see. So that means… this version of you is pretty rare, huh?”
I took another look at Rui.
Though, if I had to point out what had actually changed… it was probably just that she had unwrapped her sarashi.
Her chest, which was usually concealed, was now noticeable.
Normally, Rui gave off the cool ikemen vibe, but right now, she looked more like a stunning ikemen bishoujo.
And once again, I was reminded—Rui is a girl.
“S-So, how do I look?”
“Hmm. The disguise suits you and all, but I like this look too. It feels like… I’m finally seeing the real Rui.”
I gave her a thumbs-up.
Rui smiled softly in response.
After that, we continued chatting and searching for treasure, just enjoying our time together at a relaxed pace.
But just as our time was running out—
“Hurry up and hand over that capsule!”
“…!!”
A sudden, angry male voice rang out.
Both Rui and I immediately stopped talking, our attention snapping toward the source.
No doubt about it—something was going down.
“Let’s go check it out.”
“Yeah.”
As we got closer, the situation became clearer.
First, the one yelling was a guy.
He had blond hair and, for a guy, a pretty solid build—which was rare in this world.
Facing him were two girls, both looking frightened.
One of them was clutching a capsule in her hands.
Judging by what the guy had just said and the fact that the capsule was with them, it wasn’t hard to guess what was happening.
The girls must have found the capsule first, and now the guy was demanding they hand it over.
No—this wasn’t just a simple request.
His attitude was more like “Give it to me because I’m a guy.”
Looking around, a few other girl pairs were watching with concern.
But there were no male bodyguards around—probably the only reason this was dragging on.
Noticing that, Rui stepped forward to intervene.
“Alright, hold it right there. I think I understand the situation, so I’d like to ask a few questions.”
Sliding smoothly between them, Rui first turned to the two girls.
“You two were the ones who found the capsule first, right? No mistake?”
“Y-Yes…!”
“That’s right!”
The girls nodded firmly.
“And do you want to hand the capsule over to someone else?”
She deliberately avoided saying “this guy,” making it easier for the girls to answer.
The two glanced nervously at the blond guy for a moment… but then quickly shook their heads.
“Thanks for telling me. It’s all good now. You two can just enjoy your walk from here.”
Rui smiled at them while gently nudging their backs.
As if reassured by her words, the two girls blushed slightly before hurrying away.
Once they had disappeared into the distance, Rui turned back to the blond guy.
“That settles it. Sorry, but no matter how much of a guy you are, you can’t just take someone else’s things by force.”
“You’re just making that decision on your own! Damn it, I was this close to getting them to hand it over!”
“More like forcing them, wasn’t it? Sure, men are rare and get special treatment, but that doesn’t mean I can ignore someone throwing their weight around.”
“Tch… Acting like some damn prince! You’re that guy, aren’t you? The one they say is the coolest first-year!”
“Oh? You know about me? Thanks, I appreciate that.”
Rui didn’t even flinch at the guy’s rough words, responding with a calm, composed demeanor.
Classic Rui.
At this rate, everything should be fine—
“Tch… You really piss me off. Acting all high and mighty… for a freakin’ giant bitch.”
“…!”
The second I heard that, my eyes went wide.
I clenched my fists before I even realized it.
Then, I glanced at Rui’s expression.
“…”
She wasn’t angry.
Instead, her eyes just looked… sad.

[Rui’s POV]
“Tch… You really piss me off. Acting all high and mighty… for a freakin’ giant bitch.”
For a moment, I stopped breathing.
Giant bitch.
It was a phrase I’d heard countless times in the past.
Guys had always looked at me and muttered it under their breath, as if my height alone was something to be resented.
I thought I had gotten used to it.
But my body stiffened instinctively.
The guy in front of me—Fujino-kun, if I remember correctly.
According to the reports shared among the male bodyguards, he had a history of being rough with his words toward the girls. He was even labeled as a problem student.
“I just can’t stand you. Walking around with that huge body, acting all high and mighty while the girls fawn over you! Why the hell are you the one getting all that attention!?”
I hadn’t done anything wrong.
But the way he spoke made it sound like I had.
I knew this was just his frustration talking.
I knew that.
“Hey, are you even listening, giant bitch!?”
That again…
That one phrase—no matter how many times I’d heard it—
“…Fujino-kun, right?”
I forced my voice to stay level, deliberately keeping my tone professional.
“If you have time to waste bothering me, you’d be better off searching for more capsules, don’t you think?”
I didn’t let my expression waver.
I didn’t let my voice shake.
I stayed composed.
I was being rational.
I was calm.
Just like always.
…So why did I feel so uneasy?
“Hah? Talking back now? You’re still just a girl, know your place!”
“That’s… contradicting yourself, don’t you think?”
Even though my tone remained steady, my words wouldn’t come out as smoothly.
And Fujino-kun seemed to notice.
“Hah. Just a little pushback from a guy and you freeze up? You’re seriously not cut out to be a male bodyguard. But even if you quit, all you’d be doing is showing off those useless lumps on your chest. Maybe you should just drop out of school already?”
“…!”
He was saying whatever he wanted… and yet, I couldn’t say a word back.
“E-Erm… Fujino-kun, isn’t that going a bit too far…?”
A weak voice spoke up—his female partner.
“Hah? You got a problem with what I’m saying?”
“N-No, I just…”
Unable to withstand the sharp glare he shot her way, she quickly looked down.
“Tch. Speak up, will you? This is why people say women are just meant to obey men.”
Because of me, someone else was getting hurt too.
More than anger or sadness… a sense of resignation welled up inside me.
This was just how it was.
No matter how much I changed my appearance.
No matter if the people I cared about accepted me.
In the end, I couldn’t change the world around me—
“And what makes you think you’re so damn important?”
A voice cut through the suffocating atmosphere.
Not a shout. Not a yell.
A calm, steady voice.
I turned to my side—
And there stood Ikuto.
His eyes were remarkably… composed.
