Chapter 37
The second day of the field trip.
After finishing our breakfast buffet, we gathered in the forest a short walk away from our lodging.
Kiyomi-sensei did a quick “Ah—ah—” megaphone test before starting to speak.
“Alright, some of you might have already figured this out yesterday, but… our school doesn’t do the typical two-person test of courage. I mean, it’s not like any of you could pull it off anyway.”
“““Ehhhhh!!”””
The girls let out disappointed voices, while the boys looked relieved.
The biggest highlight of a field trip is usually the test of courage, but letting the boys walk around in the dark was probably deemed too dangerous, so they scrapped the idea.
It was a reasonable decision, and honestly, as someone who sucks at scary stuff, I was genuinely grateful.
“Instead, as written in your handbooks, you’ll be doing a two-person walk through the forest. So, girls, you can start celebrating now.”
“““YAAAYYYY!!!!”””
“…So, we’re still going to end up paired with a girl, huh?”
“Am I even going to make it back alive…?”
The girls were overjoyed. The boys looked utterly defeated.
As for me—
“YAAAYYYY!!!”
I was the only guy shouting along with the girls in excitement.
Rui, standing next to me, gave me a look that basically said, You’re the same as always, huh? Meanwhile, Kanoya-san smiled softly at me.
Both of them seemed a little relieved to see me acting normal.
Well, I guess it makes sense for them to be worried…
“If it were me, I wouldn’t let such a wonderful boy out of my sight. In fact… I’d want to keep him all to myself, even if it meant locking him up. Fufufu…”
Last night’s incident—where I almost ended up in a dangerous situation with a woman—was later shared with my male bodyguard, Rui.
After hearing the details, Rui looked incredibly down, clearly feeling responsible as my bodyguard.
But, just like Kanoya-san, Rui respected my wishes. In the end, the three of us decided to keep this incident a secret so I could continue participating in the field trip until the end.
Then, Kiyomi-sensei began explaining the next activity.
To summarize: everyone would draw a lottery within the class, and those who picked the same number would pair up and walk through the forest for 30 minutes.
After 30 minutes, we would return to the meeting spot and draw lots again.
Basically, it was an opportunity to explore the forest while deepening our bond with our partner.
But if it’s a boy-girl pair, isn’t that basically just a date?
Apparently, the girls were thinking the same thing.
“I’m definitely getting paired with a guy!”
“If I don’t, I might as well collapse and stay in bed for the rest of the trip…!”
The atmosphere around the girls drawing lots was intense.
Since there were only three boys, it wasn’t long before most of the girls let out disappointed cries.
Meanwhile, the ones who paired up with Takahashi and Tanaka made sure to show off with smug expressions.
“Looks like it’s Ichise’s turn next.”
“Well, I am the last one left.”
Yeah, I was the last one to draw a lot… but—
“I wonder who Ichise-kun’s partner will be?”
A soft voice spoke from behind me—Kanoya-san.
Since I was the last one, that meant Kanoya-san had already drawn her lot.
And looking around, all the other students had already formed pairs based on the numbers they picked.
Except for Kanoya-san.
Which means…
“Isn’t this just a waste of time!?”
There’s no way my partner isn’t Kanoya-san!
I mean, I’m happy to be paired with her, but still! Is there even a point in drawing the lot at this stage!?
“Don’t be like that, Ichise. The thrill of drawing lots is part of the youthful experience.”
“We already know the result, there’s no thrill at all!”
Well, arguing about it wasn’t going to change anything.
I quickly pulled the last remaining lot from the box.
“Looks like my partner is Ichise-kun.”
“I haven’t even checked my number yet, but yeah, no surprises there. Looking forward to it, Kanoya-san.”
And just like that, my first partner was officially Kanoya-san.
Once the class lined up in pairs, Kiyomi-sensei began explaining the next part of the activity.
“If you don’t usually exercise, make sure to do some warm-ups first. Also, so you don’t run out of things to talk about, I’ve scattered some treasures around the forest. Try to find them while you walk.”
“What do you mean by treasures!?”
One of the girls immediately raised her voice to ask.
“The treasures are capsules. Inside each capsule is a prize. For example, a one-week free pass for the cafeteria, a free dessert pass, or even a pair of amusement park tickets—”
For something that’s just a bonus, the prizes are pretty extravagant! Now I’m actually motivated!
“Oh, and… there was also a one-day male bodyguard experience or something?”
After a deliberate pause, Kiyomi-sensei added that last bit with a sly grin.
Needless to say, that was what got the biggest reaction from the girls.
“A one-day male bodyguard experience… Kiyomi-sensei really threw in something crazy, huh?”
Rui, standing in front of me, muttered in disbelief.
From a male bodyguard’s perspective, it basically meant getting a whole day off… so I guess it’s a pretty good deal?
“Being a male bodyguard for a day…”
Beside me, Kanoya-san was murmuring to herself with a serious expression.
“You’re only allowed to open the capsules at the end of this session, so don’t open them as soon as you find them! Alright, we’ll start in staggered intervals by pairs.”
And with that, instead of a test of courage, our unique role-reversed world event—where we drew lots for partners and took a walk through the forest—began.
