Shiyori’s rumors continue going on without a glimpse of sobering down. As I couldn’t stand still hearing and watching that, so I rushed out of the classroom. At times like this, being a member of another class was terribly frustrating.
“Eh you’re kidding me right!? Can this be done that easily!?”
“Ah, I’m always short on time in the morning, rather this already seems like a complete makeover altogether!”
“Truly I say~ That was why even Yoshida-san has changed so much in appearance too really!”
“Um, well, nn, yes…”
I ran into a group of girls in front of the classroom. There was also Shiyori present there. The usual group centered on Nanjo Rin. Are they perhaps on their way to the dining room? Although the focus of the talk seemed to revolve around Shiyori… but from what I could see by far, Nanjo Rin was in complete control of the conversation. No, instead, I should say that she is inducing/initiating the conversation?
It even looks as if Nanjo Rin was especially trying to protect Shiyori at that.
“…!”
“… Shiyori.”
Meeting Shiyori eye to eye all of a sudden, I involuntarily called out her name in a murmur. As usual, she was quick to look away — but then, unlike usual, she also looked somewhat tired and apologetic.
Even though you finally tried to change yourself, why do your face still look so clouded … That started making me feel frustrated somehow.
『A~h, I really can’t go on with these boys. Even he came just by looking at my superficial image after all damnit.』
Suddenly, I remembered what Nanjo Rin said to me the other day at the emergency stairs.
『What the heck is this, So stupid and worthless.』
And then, that line from this morning…
I wonder if Nanjo Rin has any insights about this situation after all?
It was like a knight protecting a princess.
『Cute and witty, huh? If that’s all there is to it, then there are plenty of people on TV and in the magazines you see these days you know. …』
Saying that, I start remembering her mocking herself with a self-deprecating smile.
I don’t know what Nanjo Rin’s intentions are at the end of the day. However one thing was clear, she had ill feelings toward Shiyori. I was sure of that.
I think I appreciate her being. However, she becomes keenly aware of her own powerlessness and then starts having these complicated feelings. However, the only thing I was capable of doing now was to just to not let the others find out that I’m the boy who lives with that pure and untainted gorgeous girl who suddenly had an image change, and with that, not adding anymore fuel into that hot topic.
After a while, it was after-school.
Still there was little to no end to the topic of Shiyori en large, but the crux, the nature had started to gradually change all in all.
“The Princess of the Sun and Princess of the Moon! Do you understand what it means, Subaru!?”
“What the heck is that?”
“Those are obviously Nanjo-san and Yoshida-san! Isn’t that obvious…”
“Oh, so that is what they are being addressed now, you’re saying?”
“Ya you got that right!”
Koutora came over excited and blurted out such topics upfront.
It seems that the pretty girl version of Shiyori has become an outcome managed by the producing giants like Nanjo Rin herself. Thanks to that, her stock prices had also skyrocketed heavily. But, due to that heavy price hike, the people eyeing to get easy shares out of her had already started disappearing.
“So, Subaru, why don’t we go and see those two princesses up close? It’ll be a treat for our sore eyes!”
“Nope, I’m fine.”
“Kaah! As usual, your uninterest in girls is damn high, you’re living a dark youth, I tell you!”
“Shut up.”
… Nanjo Rin can be trusted. I am confident in her because I already knew the cat-mask she wears — and also her real self, her essence. It would be a better decision to leave this matter entirely to her.
Rather, seriously, if I go out there, they’ll start suspecting my relationship with her — no, this was just an excuse I am pushing on myself. I am well aware of the feelings of jealousy I have towards Nanjo Rin, perhaps because I know how unworthy I was for her. Thinking that myself, I became even more surprised.
After seeing Koutora returning back to his classroom, I quietly picked up my bag and left my seat.
On the way home, I saw Shiyori surrounded by girls in the class next room. She looked shy and embarrassed, continuously being teased around by Nanjo Rin and others.
—For the time being, all seems just about fine.
With thinking on such terms, I walk my way home. As usual, I walked alone to the station and got on the train.
Come to think of it, this morning was the first time we ever went to school together. When I look out the window of the door with that in mind, for some reason I start getting an illusion that this morning’s Shiyori was still right in front of me, standing.
There is a limit to what I could do being at school. But if it’s here…
Thinking on those lines, my steps stop in front of the Hatsuseya Station, where I met Shiyori for the first time.
Why? I don’t even know myself. However, somehow I desperately wanted to wait for Shiyori in this place once more.
“……a~h”
“… yo”
I wonder for how long did I stand there?
The sunlight in early autumn weakens unexpectedly quickly, as the western sky is dyed like mad red. When Shiyori came out of the station at last, she couldn’t hide the color of fatigue showing up on her face. However, the expression of surprise was greater as that took over.
“”…””
The usual, familiar silence. It’s absolutely not an uncomfortable time.
After a while, we both started to move our legs at the same time. I think it appeared quite a strange sight all in all.
A man and a woman walked in between residential area during the evening, keeping a fine distance between them. There was no sugary atmosphere in between them, nor was there grim. An atmosphere that can be arguably told as natural.
“Today was… Quite hard, wasn’t it…”
“……yes”
I speak to her in a mutter. Even I was surprised by the way I talked.
“I was really surprised as well… Everyone were also quite surprised too.”
“……yes, it seems so too.”
None of the words that came back from her was energetic.
Shiyori is a quiet person by nature. There must have been no time to relax with having people fuss so much about her all of a sudden. There must have also been more than usual eyes of lust, along with eyes of curiosity. And Nanjo Rin was the one who protected her from them.
— That’s definitely not me.
[TL notes: MC telling that he is not part of the group of people who saw her with an eye of lust.]
Bringing that reality into my thoughts yet again, made my chest suddenly ache in pain. In order to deceive myself from that pain, I glanced behind me. However, looking at the gloomy face of Shiyori hanging down, my heart ached even greater.
『Yoshida-san, are you—』 『Yoshida-san is definitely—』 『Yoshida-san, have you —』 『Yoshida —』
What I only remembered was the multitudes of voices the onlookers were constantly throwing curiously at her today. For some reason, I didn’t like her being called by the name Yoshida anymore. And moreover, I despise myself for also calling her Yoshida in the process of remembering these.
“Shiyori.”
“… eh?”
Stopping, I took hold of her hands. That was absolutely not what she is — the girl in front of me isn’t just some “Yoshida”… thinking that, I grab hold of Shiyori’s hand.
“Shiyori…you are only Shiyori.”
“Eh… eeeh?”
With my ego making it clear that—- she was no one other than Shiyori alone, I wrap my hands around hers as if I didn’t care about her getting embarassed in the process.
As if I care about her getting embarrassed and surprised, and all in all having her face gradually turn red? Rather, that seems to be more like the usual Shiyori I know of.
“Say… Shiyori”
“Ye—Ye—YES!”
“Let’s go home and play a game again today?”
“……”
When I was busy thinking about those things, the words that came out of my mouth automatically were those. For me especially, it was a line that makes me wonder what am I really doing. However, it was rather a magical word that changed Shiyori’s expression gradually in a blink of an eye.
It somehow felt like, that was more like us, as who we actually are.
“…Yes!”
Shiyori showed a smile like a flower blooming, as we laugh on our way seeing the sun melt into the horizon.
That was just it, I wanted to see the smile of this Shiyori right here.
