Chapter 163 Elsie
Then, for a while longer, we continued our journey through the “Chamber of Truth.”
Lyune still seemed angry. She walked a few steps ahead of me, muttering insults in her mind—”Pervert, idiot, the worst”—on repeat. I felt genuinely guilty, but every now and then, she’d let out a mental scream like, “Why my underwear…?” which made things all the more awkward.
Along the way, we encountered monsters several times—goblins, giant spiders, and the like.
Each time, Lyune generously shared her knowledge: “That monster’s weak spot is the back of its neck!” or “Aim for its eyes!”
Even though she couldn’t fight herself, I could tell she was doing everything she could to support me in her own way.
(I hope we can meet up with Master soon… And when we do, I’m totally telling on Kiska.)
Listening to her thoughts, I pushed forward, step by step.
“Ah.”
Lyune suddenly stopped in her tracks.
Ahead of us stood a door—completely different from any we’d seen before. The pitch-black surface was covered in eerie patterns, surrounded by pale blue flames that burned endlessly. It radiated a crushing presence, like a giant shrouded in darkness, standing with arms crossed and glaring down at us.
(Something bad is definitely behind this… But turning back isn’t an option, is it?)
That was exactly right. We couldn’t stop here. Nyau was still waiting for us, and more than anything, we needed to get out of this place.
“A boss fight wouldn’t be surprising,” Lyune murmured.
I was thinking the same thing. Elsie had guided us all the way here—there was no doubt some monstrous enemy awaited us.
But—
“Let’s go.”
With just those words, I placed my hand on the door.
(I really hope I don’t have to use magic… No matter what, I have to keep that secret safe.)
I could hear Lyune’s inner thoughts. Thanks to that, I could tell exactly how hard she was trying to keep her secret.
Silently listening to her unspoken words, I stepped forward beyond the door.
“I’m so glad you made it this far. I’ve been waiting for you.”
The moment Elsie’s voice reached my ears, a chill ran down my spine.
Dressed in her pristine maid uniform, she stood bathed in the flickering candlelight—graceful yet unsettling. The very person who had toyed with us all this time now smiled gently, as if none of it had ever happened.
Just looking at that expression made my anger rise. After everything she put us through, she still had the nerve to act composed? But beneath my fury, unease twisted in my gut. What was she planning? At the very least, I needed to figure that out.
“You backed us into a corner like this—what the hell do you want?”
My voice trembled, more from anger than fear. Still smiling, Elsie simply pointed ahead.
“There’s no need to be so anxious. Just beyond here, you’ll find a treasure chest—one that is necessary to clear this mission. If you can obtain it, I will release you from this place.”
I shook my head. No way it was that simple.
“You really expect me to believe that?”
“Fufu, of course, it won’t be easy. To claim the treasure chest, you’ll have to defeat me first.”
Her smile deepened as she spoke.
Cold sweat dripped down my back.
Because I knew—she was supposed to be invincible in this space.
She had just proven it earlier when she stabbed herself in the chest.
“Have you ever heard this story?” Elsie began in a sweet, almost melodic voice. “One bright morning, a noble princess met a knight.”
I furrowed my brows. Why was she suddenly telling a story? What was she trying to do?
“The two were drawn to each other, and soon, they became the envy of all—a bond so deep, so intimate. Just being by his side made the princess happy, as if fate itself had brought them together—”
For just a moment, her voice wavered.
There was something raw in it—something painful.
Like she wasn’t just reciting a tale, but reliving it.
“But one day, the knight met a charming dancer. At first, it was nothing—a fleeting encounter. But over time, their hearts connected, and before anyone realized it, they had formed a secret, special bond.”
Elsie’s gaze flickered between Lyune and me.
Something in her expression felt calculated.
It sent a shiver down my spine.
“Why are you telling us this—”
“The princess knew. But she was too afraid of losing the one she loved, so she could do nothing but watch. Because love… love has the power to tear a person apart.”
(This story… something about it is eerie…)
Lyune’s inner voice trembled.
Elsie’s story felt like a sharp blade, poised to pierce our hearts.
“Why… would you tell such a story…?”
Elsie wore a wicked smile.
“This is just a simple love story. The kind of ordinary romance anyone might experience. But—”
She paused for a moment before continuing.
“I just thought it seemed somewhat similar to your situation.”
Then, she let out a quiet chuckle.
What is she talking about? Similar to our situation?
What does she mean?
Elsie’s words drifted like mist, impossible to grasp. Lyune and I had faced countless trials in this labyrinth. But a connection between us like the princess, knight, and dancer in her tale? That didn’t make any sense.
Elsie simply smiled, as if she knew something we didn’t, but offered no further explanation.
(Could she mean… Master and Kiska? No, that can’t be it. Because I…)
Lyune’s thoughts echoed in my mind. She seemed just as confused.
“I don’t know what you’re scheming, but stop playing with us.”
I put my anger into my words, and Elsie let out a soft chuckle.
“You still don’t understand your own situation, do you?”
Elsie’s words rang out, cold and sharp.
In that instant, an alarm-like sensation surged through me—like every cell in my body had simultaneously detected danger.
And then, a searing pain tore through me.
“Gah…!”
Blood gushed from my mouth.
Before I even realized it, a sword had pierced my chest. The unmistakable sensation of cold steel running through my body. But how? What just happened? I couldn’t understand.
“Kiska!”
Lyune’s scream echoed, sounding distant despite being right there. The fear and panic in her voice clenched around my heart.
The sound of blood dripping onto the floor was unnervingly vivid. Time itself felt distorted.
What… just happened?
I was prepared for battle. I was ready to read my opponent’s movements. And yet—why? Elsie hadn’t even moved. She was only pointing. And yet, my body—
“I am God in this space.”
Elsie smiled sweetly.
