Chapter 158 Game
“After carefully inspecting, I didn’t find anything that looked like a trap.”
With that, Nyau led us forward.
Beyond the door lay a hallway, stretching straight ahead. I glanced to both sides, but the walls were completely flat with no doors or windows—an unnaturally stark design, as if the only purpose of the passageway was to connect us to somewhere else.
“This is the room.”
Nyau stopped in front of the door at the far end.
“There’s no danger of getting attacked the moment you open this door, so you can both relax.”
Hearing that, I felt a bit relieved and waited for Nyau to open the door.
Inside was a spacious room.
At first glance, it looked like a plain, empty room with no furniture or belongings. But it didn’t take long to understand why Nyau wanted to show us this room.
In the middle of the room sat a suspicious-looking stuffed toy on the floor.
“A teddy bear, right?”
Sure enough, there was a teddy bear placed right in the center of the room. The way it was left there, it was practically screaming that it was a trap.
“I’ll approach it, so you two stay back and watch from a distance.”
Lyune and I nodded.
After confirming this, Nyau carefully inched forward, slowly approaching the teddy bear.
“GROOOOAAAAAAARRRRR!!”
A ferocious roar echoed through the room.
In an instant, the thing we thought was just a stuffed toy transformed into a massive monster.
“Huh?”
Nyau let out a dazed sound.
“Whoa!”
Lyune gasped in surprise.
Even I couldn’t help but step back half a pace, shocked by the sight before us. Upon closer inspection, the creature standing in front of us was a Bugbear clad in armor.
Now that I thought about it, maybe that stuffed bear had actually been an armored Bugbear all along. Still, of all things, it had to be an armored Bugbear, I thought with an inward sigh. This particular monster held a kind of grudge against me, as it had killed me several times before.
“The… the stuffed animal turned into a monster…?”
Nyau raised her staff, a look of confusion on her face.
“Master, do you think this is an enemy attack?”
“That’s very likely. Both of you, be careful,” Nyau replied, gripping her staff tightly, likely preparing to cast a spell. At the very least, I should buy some time until she could get the spell off.
Just as I thought that and reached for the sword at my side—
“Huh, strange. I thought you’d be more surprised,” a human voice suddenly came from the Bugbear.
The next moment, the Bugbear’s head split open from top to bottom.
“Whaaat?!”
Nyau and Lyune both screamed at the unexpected turn of events.
Even I was stunned.
“Oh, don’t be so shocked. It’s just me.”
The voice was one I recognized.
“Hello, it’s me, Elsie, Chief Attendant to the Second Prince. It’s been a while since earlier.”
With that, she emerged from inside the Bugbear costume. Apparently, the creature we thought was a Bugbear was just a hollow disguise.
To think, the very person who set this trap would reveal herself in such a way…
With a small, lively hop, she slipped out of the costume. Elsie stood before us, still dressed in her maid uniform, just as she had been before.
“—!”
Immediately, Nyau glared at Elsie.
“Sage Nyau, there’s no need to be so wary. I don’t intend to start anything with you here and now.”
“After everything you’ve done, you have the nerve to say that?”
“I understand why you’re angry, Sage Nyau. But do you realize that this situation is partly your fault as well?”
“Wh-what are you getting at?”
“Simply that, instead of that half-hearted capture, you should have just killed me back then. If you’d been serious, I wouldn’t have had a chance to resist.”
“I could still kill you right now.”
There was a clear intent to kill.
Nyau’s gaze sharpened as she looked at Elsie.
“You still don’t understand, do you?”
Elsie sighed in exasperation.
“This is my domain. There’s no way I would die here.”
With that, Elsie snapped her fingers.
Suddenly, a sword materialized in what had been empty space, hovering in the air. With a sharp swish, it sliced through the air and then drove forward—
—straight into Elsie’s chest.
In other words, she had impaled herself with her own sword.
Blood sprayed from the wound, creating a scene that made me instinctively want to look away, yet Elsie continued to speak, unfazed.
“See?”
“Wha…?”
Nyau’s face was filled with shock.
“In this space, I can do anything I wish. As you can see, I can’t die here.”
A cold sweat broke out on me. If what she said was true, then she was invincible in this space.
“But there’s no need to despair,” she continued. “I don’t intend to harm you. I simply want you to play a game.”
“A… game?”
Nyau voiced her confusion.
When I think of games, I picture cards or board games like chess, but would we be doing something like that in here?
“Yes, a game! The rules are simple: you’ll be presented with missions, and you just have to clear them. If you succeed, I’ll let you out. But if you fail… you’ll be trapped in this space forever.”
“Why do you get to make that decision?”
“Don’t raise your voice, Sage Nyau. This is a done deal,” Elsie replied, her gaze icy as she gently traced her finger along Nyau’s neck, as if to remind her she could kill her any time.
Sensing this, Nyau fell silent.
“Well then, I wish you all the best of luck.”
And with that, Elsie vanished along with the Bugbear disguise, leaving no trace behind.
She had come and gone like a storm, leaving me bewildered.
And still, we had no details about this so-called game.
“W-what should we do?”
It was Lyune who broke the silence first. Her usual cheer was gone, replaced by a solemn look as she grasped the seriousness of the situation.
“It’s annoying, but for now, it seems like we have no choice but to play along with this so-called game she mentioned.”
“Can’t you force us out with your magic, Nyau?”
Given Nyau’s skill as a mage, I thought she might be able to break us out of this space. After all, she had once used teleportation magic to exit a dungeon instantly.
“There isn’t enough information to make an escape. To gather intel, we should follow her game for now.”
If that’s the case, then I’ll go along with Nyau’s plan and focus on the game for now.
Just as I thought that, something happened.
Suddenly, a transparent screen, like a status menu, appeared on the wall in large letters.
It read:
▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼

“Huh????”
For a moment, I couldn’t even process what I was reading.
