Chapter 3.1: You Won’t Start Hating Me, Will You?
Sana’s parents called me at night, sounding desperate. They said Sana was calling my name and acting so frantic that they couldn’t handle her, so they asked me to come to the hospital right away.
I didn’t understand what was going on, but I quickly got ready and rode in my mom’s car to the hospital. When I got to the hospital room, Sana was there with red, swollen eyes and a pale face. As soon as she saw me, she started sobbing and hugged me tightly, even though her parents were right there.
“Please, Haruto, don’t abandon me!?”
“Hey, what’s wrong?”
“I’ll be a more honest girl.”
“What’s with you all of a sudden?”
“It’s all my fault for always taking advantage of you and acting so full of myself.”
Her expression was blank, and what she said was pretty incoherent, but I couldn’t just leave Sana in such an obviously abnormal state.
“It’s okay. I won’t abandon you, Sana.”
“Really…?”
“Yeah, so calm down.”
“You won’t start hating me, will you?”
“How could I hate my one and only precious childhood friend?”
“You’re not lying, right?”
“I swear to God it’s not a lie, so don’t worry.”
Sana, crying her eyes out in front of me, looked so fragile, almost like a little kid. Sana, who’s usually the type to never cry, was sobbing and so exhausted—what could have happened to her?
After a while, Sana calmed down and fell back asleep. I asked her parents what happened, but they didn’t know either. They said she started crying and freaking out as soon as she woke up. In the end, we didn’t figure out a clear reason, so I left the hospital room feeling frustrated and unsettled.
“The hospital doctor said it might be related to something mental, but honestly, that’s not clear either.”
Sana passing out at the outlet was due to anemia, not some mental shock or anything. Plus, she was unconscious until she started freaking out, so there’s no clue why she suddenly acted like that.
“…Maybe she had some scary dream while she was unconscious?”
That was the only ridiculous reason I could think of. If that’s true and a nightmare made her like that, I’m really curious about what kind of dream could break down someone as confident and strong-willed as Sana so badly.
It’s definitely something awful, but I can’t imagine what. Thinking about it, I went back to my mom’s car. She looked worried and spoke to me.
“Is Sana-chan okay…?”
“I don’t think you can call that okay.”
“What do you mean?”
I started explaining to my mom what I saw with Sana. She still looked worried but also had a face like she couldn’t believe it.
“I can’t believe Sana-chan would freak out like that. What happened to her?”
“If I hadn’t seen Sana like that myself, I probably wouldn’t believe it either, just like you now, Mom. Even Sana’s dad and mom, and the hospital doctor, didn’t know why she was like that.”
My mom has known Sana since we were kids because she’s my childhood friend, so she knows what kind of person Sana is. I totally get why she’d make a face like she can’t believe it.
For now, since Sana was acting strange, she’s staying in the hospital over the weekend just to be safe. She’s so fragile right now that it throws me off, so I hope she gets back to her usual self soon.
