Chapter 19: The Reason There Are Only Beautiful Women

“I’m kind of sorry… Ceres-kun.”

“It’s no big deal! Since we’re already here, why don’t we eat first?”

“Yeah, you’re right.”

When morning came, I went out with Katie, but she ended up apologizing to me.

A little earlier…

“Ceres-kun, today I’ll treat you to anything you want. Eat as much as you like.”

So Katie had said, so we went to a slightly upscale restaurant…

“You’re a man, right? If you’re accompanied by a woman, everything is free! Eat and drink all you want!”

So the manager had said, and we ended up in a buffet situation. We started with steak and ended with parfaits. I was completely full.

Katie apologized like that, but…

“Don’t worry about it. I didn’t pay anything either.”

When I showed my security card to prove I was male, the meal was free for both of us. When I asked the restaurant out of curiosity, I found out that it wasn’t that meals were free just for men. The rule was that “a man accompanied by a woman eats for free.”

Apparently, it was part of a system to promote romantic relationships. Though, even men alone already had quite a lot of benefits. They could eat at a 70% discount thanks to government support. In most cases, the remaining 30% wasn’t even charged.

Why? Because women often came, hoping they could meet a man who was eating alone. Hence why many restaurants offered this as part of the service. So technically speaking, I was the one treating, but since it was a free service, I didn’t pay anything. Still, being called the one treating made me feel a bit ticklish inside.

“Sorry about that. So, what should we do next?”

Katie glanced over at the LR, but… I wasn’t really feeling it. It was still midday after all.

“Isn’t there something more fun, like an activity or something?”

“Then, how about the LR…”

I knew she’d say that.

“Let’s not, at least not during the day. Think of something else.”

“You’re right… Oh! How about an amusement park?”

“Amusement park?”

“Yeah, there’s a place nearby called Mouse & Beaver Land. Wanna check it out?”

Mouse and beaver? An amusement park, huh? That sounded fun.

“Yeah, sounds like a blast. Let’s go!”

Mouse & Beaver Land turned out to be a much larger facility than I expected. Still, I noticed a few LRs scattered around here, too.

A love hotel in a dream-like world?! Is that even allowed?!

That thought crossed my mind, but… 

Wait, what is a love hotel, anyway? Oh well.

“It’s the biggest amusement park in this area! So, Ceres-kun… ah!”

“It’s okay, I won’t pay, but let’s say it’s my treat.”

There was a clear sign that read: “Men accompanied by a woman enter free.”

“Excuse me, I’d like a pair ticket for a male and female, please.”

“Certainly. May I see your security card?”

“Here you go.”

When I handed over my card…

“Confirmed. You’re male, so admission is free. Also, please wear this badge.”

The woman handed us not only the tickets but also a badge.

“What’s this badge for?”

“It comes with various perks! But what those are… Well, you’ll have to find out inside.”

“I see! Thank you very much!”

As we walked into the park wearing the badges, a mouse character and a beaver character came right up to us and shook our hands.

Ah, I get it. Wearing this badge means the characters give you priority attention.

“Pretty good service, huh?”

“……”

For some reason, Katie looked slightly annoyed.

“What’s wrong?”

“Ceres-kun, those characters might look like mascots, but they’re all women inside…”

“True, but does that really matter? They’re just characters, after all.”

“I figured you’d say that… But even if they look innocent, they’re still beasts on the inside. Be careful.”

“Come on, this is a dream-like place. Nothing’s gonna happen.”

“You’re too naive, Ceres-kun… Never underestimate a girl’s lust or romantic urges!”

“If you say so… I’ll be careful. So, where should we go first?”

“Hmm, how about that?”

Thriller House? Oh, a haunted house.

“Shall we give it a try?”

Katie linked arms with me and we headed into the Thriller House.

“Yeah, I don’t know why myself.”

I felt like I had fought something way scarier before, though I might be wrong. Maybe that was why it didn’t scare me at all.

“Ceres-kun, do you want a drink? I can go get us something.”

Since we had a pair ticket, drinks were also free… This treatment felt unreal.

“Sure, I’m a bit thirsty. Thanks.”

“What would you like?”

“Cola, please.”

“Got it! I’ll be right back!”

Katie dashed off energetically. All I did was ask for a drink, but she looked so happy. She really ran off at full speed, though…

“Huff… huff… Sorry for the wait!”

“You didn’t have to rush that much…”

“Well, there’s an unspoken rule that when a woman is with a man in a place like this, no one should approach the guy unless something really serious happens. It’s just basic etiquette, though… huff…”

So that was why people were just watching from a distance. Speaking of which, there was something I wanted to ask Katie.

“Hey, Katie, can I ask you something else?”

I felt like I hadn’t seen a single overweight person.

If they make their kids obese, they can be legally punished. Once kids enter school, the school manages their nutrition. If a child starts gaining weight, their food is reduced and they’re made to exercise. So unless there’s an illness, there shouldn’t be any obese or extremely skinny children.”

“I see… Sorry, I guess my memory really is a mess.”

“That’s okay. Are you alright?”

“Yeah, I’m fine!”

“As for why everyone’s a beautiful or cute girl, I don’t know your exact standards, but I have an idea. Back when the gender ratio wasn’t so skewed—say around 1:8—and before men started disliking women so much, even then, there were probably girls who weren’t what you’d call ‘beautiful.’ But since men could choose whoever they wanted, they didn’t pick those girls as partners. Over time, genes from girls who weren’t considered attractive didn’t get passed down. So, the girls you see now are genetically more attractive than before. That’s the theory, anyway.”

If men had their pick of partners, I guess that kind of evolution could happen.

“That makes sense.”

“Yeah. Actually, nowadays, girls have longer limbs than in the past, and with strict health management, there’s no obesity. The data says women have gotten more beautiful. But… Even now, most men still dislike women.”

“They hate women thatmuch?”

“Yeah. Ceres-kun, have you met any boys at school?”

“Only one…”

“The gender ratio is 1:50, so you should’ve met more. But you almost never see them. Even here, in this amusement park, do you see any other men?”

I looked around… And sure enough, there were none.

“You’re right…”
