Chapter 8: Reiha’s Struggle
This classroom, where I was alone with Kenzaki-san, was a closed space.
Zombies were lying everywhere, but their heads had been crushed and they were rendered powerless.
As expected, it was judged that the requirements for a Safe Room, a safe zone, were now met, and I was able to open the store.
The store could only be used in a Safe Room. It was the same rule as in “Dead Land 4.”
In “DL4,” if you purchased items from the store, only players could use them. For example, you couldn’t use recovery items on NPCs who fought alongside you in event battles.
I needed to confirm with Ai how Kenzaki-san would be treated.
“(*Sigh* Ai, can I give the weapons I bought from the store to someone else?)”
“It’s possible. However, unlike players or team members, ordinary humans do not have the method of using weapons installed. If you give a gun to someone who is not trained, they probably won’t be able to handle it.”
So, the method of using weapons was installed in players.
Come to think of it, the way I was unconsciously swinging the machete was very similar to the motion in “DL4.” That’s why I thought it was so easy to defeat zombies. I hadn’t tried the gun yet, but maybe I could handle it just as naturally.
I also wanted to gradually confirm the differences between team members and ordinary humans, but for now, it was enough to know that I could give weapons to Kenzaki-san.
I bought weapons, offensive accessories, and support accessories from the store.
The weapon was a Katana, priced at 40.
The offensive accessories were two alarm bombs, priced at 20 x 2.
The support accessories were two bandage kits, priced at 10 x 2.
I spent a total of 100 Info Value ORTA, but I had no choice but to accept it as a necessary expense.
“Kenzaki-san, could you close your eyes for a moment?”
“Huh? How many seconds should I count?”
Kenzaki-san closed her eyes right there. This person is incredibly obedient… I hope she doesn’t get fooled by a bad person in the future.
While Kenzaki-san wasn’t looking, I materialized the Katana from the inventory, taking a few seconds. It had a longer blade than the machete I was holding. In “DL4,” there were various statistics for melee weapons, such as firepower, range, and mobility, and the Katana was an easy-to-use weapon with a long range and high firepower among horizontal-swinging weapons.
I gripped the Katana and stood up.
It seemed that my stamina had fully recharged. The fatigue I usually felt, which would have kept me bedridden until the next day, had completely disappeared. This was probably thanks to the physical ability of the player.
I offered the Katana to Kenzaki-san.
“Kenzaki-san, can you use this?”
Kenzaki-san, who had opened her eyes, took the Katana with a surprised expression. She drew the blade from the sheath and held it upright, admiring it.
“It’s a good Katana.”
“Do you know about these things?”
“I’m sorry, I don’t know much, so I just said that.”
“You withdrew your bluff quickly…”
Kenzaki-san looked at the Katana with a puzzled expression.
“Where did you get this from?”
“Well, I prepared it in the classroom just in case.”
“Karamine-kun, if you want to survive in human society, it’s better to hide your attitude that clearly shows your facial expression, clearly saying that explaining is a hassle. Anyway, I won’t ask for details. It’s important that we have a weapon here.”
I was relieved that Kenzaki-san wasn’t concerned about the details.
I myself was still struggling with the question of who to talk to about Ai and whether it was better not to talk about it at all.
My stamina had recovered, and I had prepared the weapons.
I consulted with Kenzaki-san about which route to take to the gymnasium building.
“What about going straight through the school building to the gymnasium building?”
“I think it’s better not to. There are zombies everywhere inside. I think it’s better outside.”
“Then let’s first get down to the ground from here, and take a look at the gymnasium building from the shadow of the school building.”
As a player, I was able to easily jump from the second floor to the ground.
Kenzaki-san also had good athletic ability, and she jumped out of the window and landed like a cat. Her skirt was about to flip up, so I quickly looked away.
“You could have looked.”
Kenzaki-san said it calmly, but I could see that she would blush and complain if I actually looked.
First, we had to walk along the back of the school building and head towards the gymnasium building. Looking in that direction, I could see a fair number of zombies wandering around.
It was a narrow space between the school building and the wall. Since Kenzaki-san couldn’t climb the wall in one breath, we had to fight and defeat the zombies.
Kenzaki-san counted the zombies with her finger.
“One, two, three… There are a lot of them.”
“Kenzaki-san, are those the tests you got a failing grade on in math?”
“I wish you wouldn’t underestimate me, it’s all subjects. The only thing I’m confident about is my beauty and…”
Zombies were running towards us. There was one male student zombie and one female student zombie.
Before I could stop her, Kenzaki-san dashed out.
She swung the Katana, and with the tip of the blade, she bisected the first zombie from head to crotch.
She dealt with the other zombie that arrived late in the same way, and in an instant, the girl had defeated two zombies.
“Just kendo.”
It was an impressive performance. She really had something to be proud of.
Kenzaki-san, who had defeated the zombies, turned to me.
“By the way, Karamine-kun, I have a lot of friends, unlike you.”
“Why did you have to take a mount at this timing?”
“You might think that a girl defeated two zombies, but the accurate fact is that Kenzaki Reiha killed Kobayashi Hiroshi and Asano Saori. I’m troubled because I’m okay with that.”
“Are you… okay?”
“I’m okay, that’s why I’m troubled.”
While we were talking, another zombie ran towards us, but Kenzaki-san mercilessly cut down the zombie.
Another one came immediately after. This time, I stepped forward. While I did that, Kenzaki-san continued talking, as if she couldn’t help but confess something.
“The classroom I was in, there were actually more people in it. I fought desperately to save those people. I used a mop as a weapon, swinging it around, and split the heads of many zombies. They were all people I knew. It was very difficult, but I tried my best to protect everyone. After defeating all the zombies, the people who survived looked at me and said this…”
“Scary…”
“She’s crazy…”
Kenzaki-san said it weakly. It was easy to imagine that those words had hurt the soft part of this girl’s heart.
“Aaaah… Aaahhhhhhhhhh… Aaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…”
While fighting the approaching zombie, Kenzaki-san asked me.
“Hey, Karamine-kun, what do you think? Am I a crazy woman who can kill my former friends without hesitation?”
Is it okay to say what I think? I struggled with the question, but in the end, I decided to speak my mind. I thought that was the most sincere answer.
“I’m honestly not sure, since I’m a bit crazy too. But I’m glad that the first person I met at the academy was Kenzaki-san. I’m really glad that you’re not just a girl running away from zombies, but a kendo practitioner who can fight with me like this.”
“Because you find it useful in the fight against zombies?”
“Well, yeah. It makes it easier for me.”
We faced each other back to back, dealing with the zombies coming from both sides. Since Kenzaki-san wasn’t a player, I had to deal with more zombies, considering her stamina. Still, it was much easier than fighting alone.
“At least I don’t feel fear towards Kenzaki-san. I think you’re useful.”
“As a snack?”
“Don’t get carried away just because you have big breasts, I mean as a fighting force.”
Since the mini-map could only confirm a narrow range, having a wider field of vision made it easier to deal with zombies.
I wanted at least one team member who was good at close combat, and I wanted to invite Kenzaki-san. If it was according to the settings of “DL4,” there would be a very high hurdle to add someone to the team, so I didn’t say it out loud.
“Thank you. The answer I was expecting was different, but it’s so relaxing to be needed by someone.”
Kenzaki-san smiled. Her happy face, directed at me, made me feel a little itchy.
I hugged Kenzaki-san with one arm. Since I had suddenly pulled her close, her soft body was pressed against me all over. I heard a strange voice, “hya,” from her chest.
“Aaaah… Aaahhhhhhhhhh… Aaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…”
I cut down the zombie that was about to attack Kenzaki-san from the blind spot in the shade of a tree with the machete. Since I had the mini-map, I didn’t have to worry about missing zombies at close range.
“That was close. Kenzaki-san, are you okay?”
“Y-Ywes…”
“Are you really okay?”
“U-Uh, yeah. I’m okay. Thank you.”
The warm body temperature left me, and I felt a little reluctant to let go of it.
Kenzaki-san coughed a few times to maintain her composure.
“Karamine-kun, you’re more reliable than I expected. I wish we had become friends before all this happened.”
“I don’t know. Kenzaki-san is a beautiful woman, so I don’t think we would have talked if this hadn’t happened.”
“Eii!”
Kenzaki-san punched me in the cheek, blushing.
“What was that for?”
“Karamine-kun, stop attacking me like that. It’s better not to say things like that so easily.”
“Ritsu-san’s natural seducer. He tries to seduce a girl as soon as he sees their breasts.”
Ugh… Unfair…
Finally, we cleared the zombies around us.
We looked at the gymnasium building from the corner of the school building. The distance between the current point and the gymnasium building was close. From here, we could take a look at the entrance of the gymnasium building.
I felt something was wrong. There were far fewer zombies than when I looked at the main gate.
I realized the reason, and I shuddered. Kenzaki-san shouted in panic.
“Karamine-kun, the door of the gymnasium building is open!”
Zombies gather in places with a lot of people.
The fact that there were fewer zombies than before meant that, for some reason, the number of people in the gymnasium building had decreased.
“Yume-nee!”
Without thinking, I dashed out from the back of the school building and ran towards the gymnasium building.
