Chapter 25: Video Streamer Dies
United States. Video streaming site “MeTube.” Cameraman Donnie Raskin.
“Welcome to the ‘Zombie Must Die’ channel! Today, Donnie Raskin will be shooting zombies left and right! Ah, the camera is fixed to my helmet, so it might shake a bit, but please bear with me.”
The camera shows a city with tall buildings. A few zombies are walking around.
“Today is the ninth day since the zombie hazard began. The zombies in Manhattan, where we are, have decreased in number. The gun society is really the best. I want you guys to learn how to shoot zombies on this channel. What? Viewers from countries with gun control? Well, there’s nothing we can do about that, let’s give up… just kidding, just kidding. How about moving to America? Fortunately, there are plenty of guns. There are more guns than living humans, haha!
Two zombies attack, but Donnie shoots them in the head with practiced ease.
“Zombie Must Die! This is important, but zombies stop moving when their heads are destroyed. So I don’t want people in countries without guns to give up. You can just split their heads open with a fire axe. …Right? Fire axe.”
Donnie raises his hands and shows them to the camera. He’s wearing long sleeves, a protector, and leather gloves.
“Also, if a zombie bites you, you’ll become a zombie too. That’s why I’m wearing this armor. I really wanted a wetsuit to prevent shark bites, but when I went to the store, they were all gone. I guess everyone thinks the same way.”
Donnie enters one of the buildings. A sign indicating a food store appears on the screen.
“Today I came to get some food. No matter how well-armed we are, we can’t do anything about hunger… What, you don’t think it’s dangerous? I’ll tell you secretly, just for the viewers… In fact, zombies are weak. Their strength is human-like, and their running speed is also human-equivalent. But unlike us, they can’t handle weapons. As I said earlier, zombies are being driven out of Manhattan. I heard that the US military is also expanding safe zones centered around military facilities. Soon, humanity will win… Hey, look, there’s a huge fat zombie.”
The camera shows a giant zombie. A wide-bodied obese zombie walks unsteadily inside the building.
“If that thing gets close to me, I’m done, but zombies can’t use weapons, right? So if I just shoot them in the head, it’s over… What’s that? Did it throw up?”
The giant zombie vomits a large amount of green liquid from its mouth. It’s sprayed forcefully and reaches the cameraman, who is far away.
“Ugh, that’s disgusting! What is this? What is this? It’s melting! My body is melting! Look at this! My bones! My bones!”
The cameraman raises his hands again. His forearm is missing from the middle, and the bone is exposed. The screen goes black.

Japan. Video streaming site “Warawara Videos.” Cameraman Muryamuryra-kun.
“Hello, hello, hello~, it’s Muryamurya-kun! Well, today, I noticed that there were strange zombies visible from my window, so I decided to do a sudden live stream!”
The screen moves. After a brief glimpse of a messy room, it moves to the window. The window is opened, and the camera moves down to the ground.
“This is the third floor of my house. I’m filming the area below from my room window. Can you see it? There are zombies everywhere, just like the name of this channel, ‘Warawara Videos.’ My house is a detached house, but I’ve blocked the stairs on the first floor with furniture so that the zombies can’t climb up. My mom and I are going to try to hold out until help arrives. …My dad is probably wandering around on the first floor. That’s about it.”
A sound like a nose being blown.
“So, about the strange zombies. I thought this might be useful for everyone, so I decided to record it. Oh, there they are. That’s them. There’s a guy with something weird coming out of his mouth, right?”
A four-legged zombie, moving with its hands and feet on the ground, walks down an alley. It drags a tongue that is several meters long from its mouth.
“Is that a tongue? Yeah, it’s a tongue, right? Oh, it looked at me. Should I wave? I’m on the third floor, so it’s safe… Uwah.”
The cameraman screams. The screen shakes violently. The giant tongue extends from the ground and wraps around the cameraman’s arm, which is near the window.
“That’s impossible, I’m on the third floor! This is bad, this is bad, this is bad! Mom! Run! Mom!”
The sound of something falling. After the screen shakes violently, it goes black.

“Stop, Ritsu-kun. What am I being shown here?”
Yume-nee stopped me just as I was about to play the next video on my tablet.
“This? It’s a compilation of video streamers’ death scenes. I thought we could watch it together, Yume-nee.”
“Oh, that’s morbid…”
I heard Ai’s disappointed voice, and then I noticed Yume-nee frowning, so I panicked.
“Wait, wait, there’s a misunderstanding. Do you think I’m the type of person who enjoys watching people die in videos?”
“I’m glad it’s not true.”
Yume-nee showed a relieved expression.
After sex, we were lying naked on the bed, watching videos on our tablet. I was showing her this instead of pillow talk, which was unexpected.
A few days had passed since using the first Skill Drug, and ten days had passed since the start of the zombie hazard.
After enjoying the act with the second Skill Drug, Yume-nee asked me this:
“How do you decide which skill to buy?”
This was a very difficult question to answer.
Basically, we buy skills to increase the situations we can handle, so it presupposes knowledge of what difficult situations exist in “DL4.”
“In other words, the video we just watched is connected to that question. You saw zombies that were clearly different from ordinary zombies, right?”
“Yes, there was a zombie that spit out a liquid that melted people, and another one with a huge tongue.”
Yume-nee nodded as she recalled the contents of the video.
It should have been a pretty grotesque scene, but Yume-nee didn’t change her expression at all. I could feel that our emotions were gradually wearing down as we spent our days killing zombies.
“In ‘DL4,’ we call ordinary zombies ‘common zombies,’ and zombies with special abilities ‘special zombies.’ The zombies in the video we just saw were on the special side. There are various types of special zombies, but basically, they have high health points despite their small numbers.”
“So special zombies are harder to defeat than common zombies?”
“Yeah, that’s right. That’s why we need weapons and skills to defeat them. And this is the dilemma, but the weapons and skills that make it easier to defeat special zombies have high power, but they can’t be fired in rapid succession. So, it becomes difficult to deal with groups of weak common zombies.”
I became anxious about whether my poor explanation was getting through to Yume-nee, but she nodded as if she understood.
“It’s a case of ‘if you stand one, the other falls,’ isn’t it? That’s why we need team members in ‘DL4.’ There are people who deal with groups of common zombies, and others who deal with special zombies, and each person has their own role, so they need to have weapons and skills suited to those roles.”
It seemed that Yume-nee was making progress in her understanding.
I continued my explanation, feeling relieved.
“To put it more precisely, the composition also needs to be changed depending on how many team members there are. If it’s a six-person team, I think it’s okay to have two people who are specialized in dealing with special zombies, but that’s not the case with a two-person team. You can’t deal with groups of common zombies.”
For the time being, it’s likely that our team will consist of just Ritsu-kun and me. If we both have builds specialized for special zombies, it will become troublesome to deal with groups of common zombies. It’s a shame that Kenzaki-san isn’t here, as having another melee character would make it easier to deal with weak enemies.
“So, going back to your first question, the answer is that we decide which skill to purchase based on our role in the team.”
“I see. So, you’ve already purchased two more skills, which means you’ve decided on your plan for the near future, right?”
“Yeah. I’m thinking of making a jack-of-all-trades build that can handle both common and special zombies, while Yume-nee will have a build specialized for dealing with special zombies. Oh, by the way, ‘build’ refers to the composition of weapons and skills.”
To put it more precisely, I plan to acquire skills while keeping in mind the eventual six-person team, but I’ll keep that to myself. It’s more likely that we’ll continue as a two-person team, so it’s too much of a long shot.
“So, taking into account our roles in the team, these are the first two skills we acquired.”
Talking about “DL4” is really fun.
I opened the skills section from the menu screen and showed it to Yume-nee.
