Chapter 11: The Battle in the Library
A few minutes before Karamine Ritsu and the others entered the gymnasium building.
Inoue Yume had shouted, just before the equipment storage room door closed.
“I’ll be in the library!”
It wasn’t a message for Uchida Natsumi to seek help, but a message left for Ritsu to find.
Yume was certain. Just as Yume had searched for Ritsu, Ritsu would also be searching for Yume. The two of them were bound by such a bond. So, Yume left only the location, concisely, for Ritsu to find.
Zombies reached out to grab Yume.
Yume squatted down, dodging countless hands, and then she started running full speed towards the entrance of the gymnasium building.
Zombies ran after Yume.
She thought they were the running type of zombies. She had seen a movie on a video site, Netflix, where zombies appeared on a bullet train. Or maybe it was an old movie from before she was born, like 28 Days Later?
The zombies that moaned and wandered slowly, like in the works of director Romero, were scary, but running zombies were even worse. They were really bad.
“Aaaah… Aaahhhhhhhhhh… Aaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…”
The zombies reached out to grab Yume, but their movements were linear. If she watched their movements carefully, she could easily avoid them.
It seemed they had low intelligence. Yume had also seen zombies repeatedly bumping into a sliding door without opening it.
One zombie wasn’t so scary. The problem was the number and stamina. There were many zombies, and they didn’t rest. If she was chased by this many zombies, she would eventually be caught.
The running zombies also made the situation worse. Compared to walking zombies, they spread the infection much faster. If the initial response to them was delayed, there was a good chance of a pandemic happening.
—I have to find Ritsu-kun quickly and build a safe zone.—
Even in a situation where she was being chased by a large number of zombies, Yume couldn’t stop worrying about Ritsu.
Yume realized that her bad habit was coming out.
Come to think of it, I was in danger of losing my life.
She put her own safety aside and only thought about Ritsu. That was the power of her obsession with Ritsu, but it was because of that that she could deal with the situation calmly.
Even when she was surrounded by zombies, Yume still had a vision of escaping.
Just as the dead were about to catch her, the zombies scattered, as if they were distracted by something else.
—It seems silence is the right answer, after all.—
The gymnasium building was a hellish scene.
Zombies were attacking humans everywhere, biting and tearing them apart, and terrible screams rose.
Then, more zombies gathered around the victims, reacting to their screams.
Yume had realized that zombies reacted to sound.
In this situation, where many humans were screaming, if she ran quietly and silently, the zombies would lose interest in her.
If she could help the students around her, she would, but in this situation, Yume had no choice but to prioritize her own life and run as fast as she could.
Yume easily exited the gymnasium building and ran towards the school building. There were fewer zombies outside, as most of them had rushed into the gymnasium building. She reached the window of the first-floor library, avoiding the zombies, and shook it a few times. The lock here was broken, and it was supposed to open if she moved it like this…
It didn’t open.
She shook the window again. It still didn’t open. Running zombies were approaching. She shook it again. A zombie nearby was screaming. Feeling anxious, she shook it again.
Click.
The lock of the library window opened. She barely managed to slip inside and close the window. The zombies that had gathered around the window began to bang on it.
Yume sighed with relief.
That was close. She turned around to check the room, taking a breath.
“Aaaah… Aa… Aaahhhhhhhhhh… Aaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…”
A female student zombie lunged at Yume from close range.
Yume dodged to the side instinctively, and the zombie collided with the bookshelf by the window. The impact caused several books that had been neatly arranged to scatter on the floor.
Yume wondered if the girl had also escaped to the library and then turned into a zombie. Multiple shadows moved in the room. There were probably three zombies.
She had to escape. Yume ran towards the entrance of the library, panting, and reached the door.
However,
—Bang!—
The entrance door was slammed shut from the outside. There were also zombies in the corridor outside the library. She couldn’t open the door.
Three zombies were approaching from behind.
There were zombies in the room, and there were zombies outside the room.
Yume looked back and forth between the front and the back, sweating.
Should she escape to the corridor, or…
It was a choice between two options, both of which led to death. Yume chose the third option.
Just as the zombies were about to catch her, she climbed onto a bookshelf.
The bookshelf was taller than a human, and if she climbed to the top of the shelf, the zombies’ hands wouldn’t reach her.
The zombies—didn’t climb up. They just reached out to her and moaned, “Aaaah.”
Yume waited for a while, making sure there was no problem, and then she lay down on the dusty shelf, taking a breath.
Below Yume, the zombies kept charging at the bookshelf, but the fixed bookshelf didn’t move.
For now, she was safe.
Just as she thought that, the library door was suddenly opened again.
One thing after another, the situation was changing rapidly.
A big man burst into the room and closed the door.
Yume recognized the man’s face. He was the one who had been awarded for his excellent performance in the karate club. His name was, I think, Gouta.
It seemed that no new zombies had entered the library, but the zombies that were already in the room were staring at Gouta.
“Damn it! There are zombies here too! What the hell, you bastards!”
Gouta cursed as he tried to run in the library—his eyes met Yume’s, who was on top of the bookshelf.
Unlike the previous situation, Yume could help someone now. She instinctively reached out her hand.
“You, come here.”
Gouta grabbed Yume’s hand, which was extended from the top of the bookshelf, and he smiled with a sadistic expression, as if he had a bad idea.
“Hehe, don’t take it personally.”
A chill ran down Yume’s spine.
Before Yume could escape, Gouta pulled her hard. She couldn’t resist his well-trained muscles, and she was dragged out and fell to the floor.
Zombies lunged at Yume, who couldn’t move, having hit her body.
“Lucky for me. I have a girl to be my shield!”
While Yume was being attacked by the zombies, Gouta calmly climbed up to the top of the bookshelf.
He had used Yume as a decoy to save himself.
The zombies covered Yume, who was lying on her back.
They opened their mouths wide and tried to bite her neck, but Yume managed to twist her body and avoid it.
The zombies were strong, and she couldn’t push them away.
While she was struggling with one zombie, the other zombies also ran towards Yume.
“It hurts!”
It was all too easy. A zombie bit Yume’s hand. Her teeth sank into Yume’s flesh, and she felt intense pain.
—I can’t do this, it’s impossible.—
The calm Yume fully understood that her calmness had put her in an impossible situation to survive.
Since she had been bitten, there was no way to save her now.
But still, Yume desperately resisted.
Even in a situation where she couldn’t possibly survive, she still struggled to live.
Because.
If Yume was in an impossible situation to survive alone, her loved ones would definitely come to her rescue. This was not a prayer, but a conviction.
My god, who always comes to my rescue when I’m in trouble.
“Yume-nee!”
Hearing Ritsu’ shout, Yume’s heart and body trembled. He had come, after all. He had come to save her, defeating zombies along the way. Her chest was filled with indescribable warmth, and she felt her crotch getting wet with excitement.
The weight of the zombies that had been tormenting Yume disappeared.
Ritsu`had forcefully pulled the zombies off Yume, and then he split the zombie’s head with a sharp-looking blade. Behind Ritsu, a girl with blue hair in a ponytail cut down another zombie with her sword.
Ritsu, who was about to reach out to Yume, distorted his face.
“Yume-nee, that…”
It was impossible to hide. Yume smiled, trying not to worry Ritus, as she suppressed her fear, while holding her bleeding hand.
“Yeah, I’m sorry. I was bitten.”
