ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
I properly told Muna and Haruna everything. It might have made things even heavier, but I decided not to worry about that. And I gave Misaki a flick on the forehead. Her reaction when it hurt was cute. I thought I was seriously disgusting, even to myself.
After that, a little more time passed, and now it was Friday, December 22. The last school day before winter break, the closing ceremony. The ceremony was extremely boring. There wasn’t anything particularly meaningful, and they just kept repeating the same speeches over and over. At that point, it would be better to just sleep. The teachers didn’t even bother waking anyone up, so it was probably fine.
Thinking that, I rested my cheek on my hand and spaced out at my desk when Muna spoke to me, looking a little embarrassed.
“Hey, Haa-kun.”
“Hm? What is it, Muna?”
“The day after tomorrow is Christmas. Are you free?”
“Yeah, I’m free.”
“…! Hehe, that’s good! Want to go on a date with me? To an amusement park!”
Christmas… right, Christmas. It was already that time of year. I had been so caught up in winter break that I forgot. Come to think of it, this might be the first time I go on a one-on-one date on Christmas. It had always been group parties before.
“If you’re okay with me, then sure.”
“It’s not ‘if you’re okay with me’! It has to be you!”
“What about Haruna or Misaki?”
“Hm? This year we decided it’s first come, first served. Instead of a party, we’re competing properly.”
“I see. Got it, I’ll look forward to it. Thanks, Muna.”
And just like that, I ended up going on a Christmas date with Muna at an amusement park. And this kind of thing usually leads to a confession event, right? There was no need to be full of myself. Muna liked me to the point of being almost unhealthy about it. That much was obvious from watching her all this time. It wouldn’t be strange at all if she confessed at any moment.
“Man, I’m in trouble…”
I didn’t really understand what love was. If I understood that, then responding to Muna’s feelings would probably be really easy. But I didn’t. Somewhere along the way, I had been avoiding it. No matter what form it took, the feelings Muna and the others had were completely serious. I knew that. That was exactly why I didn’t want to treat them carelessly. I wanted to respond properly, with equal sincerity.
I tried thinking about it. About something that might resemble an answer. I probably had countless clues. Just not a single core answer among them. Nothing came to mind. Absolutely nothing. And before I knew it, the ceremony had ended. I had been awake, but not even a single word of the speech stuck in my head.
“Hara-kun, what’s wrong? You’ve been spacing out the whole time.”
“Are you tired?”
While I was getting ready to go home, Haruna and Misaki, who were probably worried about me, called out to me. Was my face really that obviously dumbfounded?
“Yeah, a little.”
“You need to rest sometimes.”
“That’s right. Otherwise Mii will end up clinging to you again like last time.”
“Misaki, you already did that, didn’t you? So next time, I think it should be my turn.”
“Stop. Come on, let’s go home… Where’s Muna?”
“She got called out by a boy earlier. Hehe, Muu-chan is really popular.”
I stopped them just as it looked like another fight might start. Then I noticed Muna wasn’t anywhere around, and when I asked, it seemed she was being confessed to. Muna really was popular.
…My chest hurt a little. Like a small, sharp prick.
“That boy is kind of pitiful too. Even though Muna only has eyes for you.”
“It’d be nice if he backs off gracefully, but there are always trash types who might try something against Haa-chan.”
We changed into our shoes at the lockers. I was already used to Misaki’s harsh language. That said, it was still scary. The three of us were walking when we heard a somewhat loud voice.
“I’ve liked you for a long time! Please go out with me!”
“Um… Thank you for the confession. But there’s someone I’ve already decided on in my heart… I’m sorry.”
We ran into it. The scene of Muna being confessed to. What kind of reaction was I supposed to have in a situation like this? My chest hurt even more.
“That’s a very Muu-chan-like rejection. So gentle.”
“Yeah. If it were me, I’d crush him completely.”
“Mii would probably glare at him and reject him harshly too, like ‘what are you even talking about?’”
“Then what if I confessed?”
I asked out of simple curiosity. The answer came immediately.
“Let’s go to the city office first. Then we can go greet the family.”
“How many kids do you want, Haa-chan? Any number is fine. Mii will do her best.”
“Okay, that’s scary.”
Apparently, to Misaki and the others, my confession was basically the same as a marriage proposal.
Also, what is this? Do middle school girls nowadays have a switch to turn their seriousness on and off?
“Think about it the other way. Do you think we’d ever reject you? We can’t live without you.”
“No, I don’t think so. Not even if the world turned upside down.”
“Then why did you ask? Do you have plans to confess? Yes, gladly. I’m inexperienced, but please take care of me for the rest of our lives!”
“It’s not like that. Just curiosity.”
While we were chatting like that, Muna had somehow already come back. This was awkward. I couldn’t exactly say I had watched her confession scene.
“In my case… I might take it as a sign that it’s okay to lock you up, and then actually lock you up. And make you spend your time only looking at me.”
“Wait, you heard that?”
“Yeah! I knew Haa-kun was watching too, so that’s why I rejected him gently.”
As expected of Muna. I was starting to think these girls had some kind of sensor for me.
“Alright, let’s go home. If we don’t hurry, we’ll catch a cold again.”
“Yeah. It’s gotten even colder lately.”
“But it’s fine if Haa-chan catches a cold, you know? Mii and the others will stay over and take care of you!”
“Haha, I’ll count on you when that happens.”
