“What’s wrong all of a sudden?”
“I just felt like saying it. Hey, it’s beautiful, isn’t it?”
“Yeah, it’s beautiful.”
We sat on the breakwater. It was beautiful. Everything was. This sea, the wind, and Rin-neechan too. It felt almost like a lie that just a little while ago I had wanted to die.
“…I’m sorry, Hakkun. Truly. I heard about the rumors from Muna-chan and the others, but Rin couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t even stay by your side.”
“To be honest, there was a part of me that wondered why. Not about you, Rin-neechan specifically, though. But now it’s all gone. It’s thanks to you, Rin-neechan. Thank you.”
I hadn’t told Rin-neechan anything myself either. Even so, somewhere in my heart, I had wondered why.
…Muna and the others were moving for my sake too. It wasn’t like I had really been abandoned.
“It’s still not enough. Rin and the others have to suffer more and more, suffer and suffer and suffer and suffer and suffer and suffer and suffer… we have to make you happy.”
“Hm?”
Her behavior was getting strange again. She was saying something kind of scary!
“Rin is trash. Garbage that has no value in living. That’s why I have to suffer more. Otherwise, this sin won’t disappear.”
“Wait, wait! Rin-neechan isn’t trash or garbage! You’re an angel, an angel!”
“Eh…”
Crap, I blurted out something embarrassing without thinking. But it was true, Rin-neechan really was like an angel. No matter what, at her core she was just a girl. Being praised like this probably made her really shy. Her face turned bright red like an apple.
“You’re kind, Hakkun. You’d call someone like Rin an angel?”
“No matter how anyone looks at it, Rin-neechan is nothing but an angel. You managed to stop me at the very last minute and it might not be my place to say this, but… let’s just let it go.”
There was nothing left anymore. No despair, no anger. All of it had been washed away by those tears. I gently smiled at Rin-neechan as I said that.
“Hakkun, you know… if, just hypothetically, you jumped back there and didn’t die… and until that very moment no one like Rin or the others came to help you… would you have resented us?”
“I think… I would have. Even at the very end, I would’ve wondered why no one came to save me.”
“I see. Then I’m sorry, I can’t just let it go. Rin has to carry this sin for the rest of her life.”
What was this “sin” Rin-neechan kept talking about? I didn’t really get it. Personally, I didn’t want her to think too deeply about it. But from how she had been acting, I could tell just how much it weighed on her. So I wouldn’t deny it. Instead, I would just respond like usual.
“I see, got it. …Thanks again, Rin-neechan. For saving me.”
“You’re welcome. By the way, I wonder how long it’s been since we last went to the sea, just the two of us.”
“Wasn’t the last time before I even started elementary school? You know, after that I started hanging out with Muna and the others too.”
“That time was funny, wasn’t it? We got all excited like, ‘Let’s go to the sea!’ even though neither of us could swim.”
It was an old story. Our parents suggested going to the sea, and we were so excited we couldn’t sleep. But neither Rin-neechan nor I could swim. So in a place way better than a kindergarten sandbox, we just built sandcastles and that was it. Even remembering it now made me laugh a little. It was that kind of silly story. But I remembered how incredibly fun it was. Because Rin-neechan was there with me.
“Hey, Rin-neechan. Want to make one now? A sandcastle.”
“That sounds good. Then it’s a contest! Hakkun versus Rin, who can make the bigger castle!”
“Alright, I won’t lose!”
We stood up from the breakwater and walked toward the sandy shore. Then we started. The two of us built sandcastles with everything we had. It felt like we had gone back to those old days. And the result was…
“Yay, Rin’s win!”
“Ugh, I lost again!!”
“Hehe, you can’t beat Rin.”
It was my loss. I hadn’t done this in a while, so I had gotten pretty rusty. I couldn’t believe my hand hit it midway through and made it collapse when it was almost done. Actually, wasn’t Rin-neechan’s result kind of ridiculous?? What was that thing? It looked exactly like the kind of castle some kidnapped pink princess would live in. There was no way you could normally make something like that out of sand, right? That was cheating, totally cheating. She had to be using magic or something.
“Come challenge me as many times as you like, hahahaha!”
Saying that, Rin-neechan laughed toward me. That smile was brighter than anything. It made my heart skip a beat without thinking.
…That’s not fair, seriously.
“Hakkun. School ends early today, so after this we’re planning to go to Muna-chan’s house and talk about a bunch of things. I was hoping you’d come too. What do you think?”
“Yeah, I’m fine with that. But… are Muna and the others okay with it?”
“They were the ones who said they wanted you to come.”
“I see. Yeah, then I’ll go too.”
“Alright, it’s decided. But before that…”
Rin-neechan, who had been staring intently at the sandcastle, suddenly destroyed it herself. Huh? What was she doing? Just as I stood there confused….
“Now that’s better.”
“Mmgh!?”
She stole my lips. W-what!?
“Hehe, yay. Surprise attack successful.”
“Ugh, you…”
