Volume 6 Chapter 06: My First True Feelings
What happened after that, I heard second-hand from Miyu later. After finishing the deluxe jumbo parfait with me, Yuka appeared before the students waiting to take their seats for their cram school class and apparently said something like this:
“I have some unfortunate news for you all.”
The students watched Yuka, standing at the podium with her arms crossed imposingly, without any real surprise.
“Yesterday, I became a woman.”
Those heavily suggestive words caused about 10% of the students to understand the general gist of things, another 10% were innocent boys and girls who didn’t understand at all, and the remaining 80% thought, “There’s no way Yuka would do something like that,” and weren’t really listening.
“Weren’t you a woman already?”
One of the male students in the front row, falling into the 80% category, threw that line at Yuka.
“What are you saying, like a little kid? Don’t you get it? Here.”
As if she’d been waiting for that comment, Yuka pinched the skirt of her dress with her fingers and fluttered it—hira, hira. Lowering their gaze to the swaying shadow, they saw spotless heels at her feet, asserting their presence.
“Isn’t it obvious that this is a date-night dress? And I’m wearing the same clothes as yesterday.”
The meaning of that statement was difficult for them, still so young, to grasp. With raw emotion, the male student gave Yuka a scornful look.
“Gross.”
“It’s not gross! How many showers do you think I took?!”
Yuka lashed out, making one of her pigtails whirl like a whip, creating a swish, swish sound as she threatened the male student.
“Basically, it’s sex, SEX! What else is there for a girl to become a woman! I had the best, most lovey-dovey, super-romantic sex full of love! Yesterday… or rather, just a few hours ago this morning!!”
Unable to restrain herself any longer, Yuka made a completely unfiltered statement. The boy was at a loss for words and fell silent, while the female students awkwardly lowered their gaze to their desks. They had to study for entrance exams soon and having the classroom become an awkward place was a real nuisance.
“What the heck are you doing?”
A lecturer with a stack of printouts arrived. Yuka sharply whipped her head to the side, glaring at the lecturer.
“Oh, didn’t you hear? Well, I’ll tell you.”
“I heard. Just sit down. I’m about to return the test papers for the one person who failed.”
“Nuuugh… How heartless to do this at a time like this…!”
“If you’re aware of that, then study more.”
The lecturer placed the stack of printouts on the podium, taking only one marked with X’s and lining it up to the side.
“It’s a momentous day, couldn’t you at least offer a congratulatory word? If you’re like that, you’ll still be a virgin when you’re over thirty.”
That joke about the lecturer being a virgin was something the students used to tease him about. Yuka was the only one who was seriously worried about it, which was a more difficult problem for the lecturer to deal with.
“I’ll have you know,”
However, the male lecturer’s response was different that day. Though he seemed uncomfortable speaking in front of the students, he couldn’t help but retort to Yuka’s smug face.
“I’m not a virgin anymore.”
Shock ran through the classroom. No one was facing forward anymore, but everyone was straining their ears.
“W-When was this?”
To the stunned Yuka, the lecturer, unable to back down now, continued.
“Just last week.”
The lecturer replied, almost muttering. It was nothing short of a public embarrassment, but Yuka was the only one whose eyes sparkled upon hearing the report, clasping the lecturer’s hands in hers and covering them.
“Let’s have sekihan (red bean rice) tonight to celebrate!”
“Be quiet.”
That ended their routine, and Yuka returned to her seat with the poorly scored printout in hand. The students, reading the atmosphere, didn’t interrupt or comment on their conversation, and the class ended without incident, with Yuka preparing for her retest.
She was given a practice test that was practically the answer key itself, but that wasn’t enough to derive the answers in the science subjects, so Yuka was waiting in an empty classroom, doodling on the blackboard, for someone to come and tutor her.
“Hey, um… you.”
A male student, one Yuka was relatively familiar with, came in. You could tell just by looking at him that he was from the culture club, not a very sociable type of boy, but an excellent student who consistently ranked high in national practice exams.
“If there’s anything you don’t understand, I can teach you.”
It was an offer with ulterior motives. Yuka, who was usually kept at arm’s length by most students in matters of romance, didn’t make a universally negative impression. The fact that men didn’t approach her meant that there was a chance for those who were less experienced in romance. Even so, the boy had only thought of Yuka as a “pretty but troublesome girl” until that day, and suddenly wanted to get closer to her as a member of the opposite sex.
He knew the odds were slim and thought that if he was rejected, he would just be rebuffed. However, Yuka, upon receiving the offer, placed the chalk on the chalk ledge and gave a soft smile.
“Thanks. But I’m waiting for someone else, so I don’t need it.”
Yuka turned around, putting her index finger to her lips. As she moved, her glossy pigtails danced in the air.
“If it’s dating advice you want, I could even lend you an ear.”
At Yuka’s gleeful smile, the boy’s chest was struck by the pangs of adolescence, and he blurted out, “Oh, okay!” and ran away. Perhaps it wasn’t the usual bravado, but the original charm of Yuka, brought out by her heartfelt confidence. It was too late to fall for Yuka now, but at least none of her classmates would see her dating a guy anytime soon.
“Yuka-chan, did something happen? Someone ran by here at an incredible speed.”
Sachiko came instead. They went to the same cram school, and they had started talking more often since the incident at the internet cafe.
“Nothing, really. Anyway, we don’t have much time, so please help me with this.”
Yuka placed the practice test on the long desk, facing Sachiko diagonally.
“Before we start, there’s something I want to say.”
With a serious look, Yuka stared at Sachiko. Sensing that something unusual was going on, Sachiko nodded nervously in agreement.
“I really appreciate you teaching me like this. So, um, thank you. I know you’re busy too, Sachiko. Let’s do our best for the next half year, please…”
Caught off guard by the unexpected formality, Sachiko worried that Yuka had eaten something weird, but she soon realized it wasn’t just a whim.
“Yeah. Let’s work together. If you don’t understand something in high school, I’ll teach you again.”
Sachiko readily accepted Yuka’s request. Originally, Sachiko didn’t think Yuka was evil, just hopeless, but it was at that moment that Sachiko also felt that Yuka had become a “woman.”
“Alright! In that case, I’m going to get a perfect score on the final exam and make those lecturers cry their eyes out!”
“I’m sure all the teachers would cry, but let’s start by perfecting this practice test.”
“If I make a mistake, I’ll have to give myself a punishment. Goodbye to all the distractions!”
Yuka tossed her turned-off phone into her bag. On the dark surface of the display, a message was sent to two people.
“Sorry for causing you all so much trouble. You don’t have to worry anymore. Thank you. I hope to see you from now on.”
Those plain words were difficult for her to say, so Yuka sent the unadorned message to her best friends.
“Alright, first up is math. This jagged symbol alone is a mystery.”
“Starting from there, huh?”
Yuka took out a set of stationery from her pencil case, gripping one of them. With an unprecedentedly serious look, she faced the problem sheet.
“Just you wait.”
She took a deep breath and clicked the top of her mechanical pencil twice.
