My Girlfriend Wanted an Open Relationship, So I Broke Up with Her and Found a Sweet Yandere - Chapter 17
The next morning came fast, and before I knew it, I was gazing at the scenery drifting past me swiftly from the train’s window.
There was a hum of commuters around me as I stared at my phone’s screen.
Haruka hasn’t read my text…
It was weird. I brushed it off, thinking she was over the moon about her newfound freedom and didn’t bother checking her phone. But it’s been more than a day and a half… Did something happen to her?
Or she’s in someone’s—ugh. I pinched the back of my hand. It’s no longer my concern. It has nothing to do with me.
The train came to a halt, and everyone began flowing out of the compartment hastily. Iroha had something to do, so she didn’t accompany me to university… which made the train ride a bit mundane, to be honest.
While walking out of the station and then to the university, I never took off my headphones, so the noise around me was nonexistent.
“There’s still time…” I muttered as I walked past the university gate. I was quite early today.
It was only then that I noticed a sort of commotion outside the gate and turned to see a guy being surrounded by a bunch of women. He had an angular face, pale skin, and brown eyes. An earring dangled from one ear, giving him a bit of an edge, and he had white hair.
…White hair? Kaito. It was the same drunk guy I met the day before yesterday at the ramen restaurant. He also helped us find the thief who stole Hayami-sensei’s phone.
That reminds me—I also have to help Hayami-sensei with her PC build.
“Hey! Yuuta!” someone yelled loudly, and I recognized the voice immediately. Turning around, I noticed Kaito running toward me.
He closed in quickly.
“What are you doing here?”
And before I could question him, he asked what was supposed to be my question.
I raised an eyebrow at him. “I study here. This is my university. The real question is—what you’re doing here?”
Kaito looked around nervously, his eyes flickering toward the group of girls who had been hovering around him. Before he could speak, someone stepped up behind him.
“Oh, are you a friend of his?” a woman’s voice chimed in. She was tall, confident, and clearly older—probably a senior. She brushed her hair back and gave Kaito a warm, practiced smile. “You must be new around here. If you’re interested, I can show you around. ”
Her voice had a teasing lilt to it, and she tilted her head just slightly, her smile lingering as her eyes took in Kaito’s features.
It made sense. With his sharp jawline, pale skin, and that distinctive white hair, Kaito looked like someone who’d walked out of a shoujo manga.
But despite all that, I could tell he was clearly uncomfortable. His hand twitched at his side, and he shifted his weight, avoiding eye contact.
“Ah, sorry,” I stepped forward quickly, putting myself a little between them. “I actually need to talk to him. Something kind of urgent.”
Kaito looked at me with a flash of relief, and without waiting for a reply.
“Sorry!” I called back over my shoulder. “We’ll catch up later!”
We moved fast, turning the corner near the cafeteria before either of us said anything. I finally let go, and Kaito exhaled deeply.
“You looked like you were about to die back there,” I said, half-joking.
He glanced at me and gave a sheepish grin. “That obvious, huh?”
“You’ve got the face of a model and the social instincts of a scared cat. Yeah, pretty obvious.”
He chuckled awkwardly, scratching the back of his head.
“My Girlfriend…She studies here,” Kaito said, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. “I came to meet her.”
I wasn’t the one who asked but that made me pause for a second.
His girlfriend, huh?
My mind wandered back to the other night at the ramen shop—when he was on the phone with someone. I hadn’t paid much attention to it at the time, but now, putting the pieces together, the person on the other end was most likely her.
He’d been loud… frustrated. Drunk too, which didn’t help.
The things he said weren’t exactly kind. In fact, if I were being honest, they were the kind of words that usually came right before a breakup. I remember thinking how tense and stormy his voice sounded while he was on that call—and then how quickly he composed himself afterward, even apologizing for causing a scene like nothing happened.
It was hard to tell if they were even still together after that.
I cleared my throat and asked, “So… she’s a student here?”
“Yeah,” he replied, nodding. “She’s in her second year.”
Second year… That narrowed it down only slightly. There were a ton of students in that batch.
I gave a small nod and stepped back. “Alright. Looks like you’ve got something important to discuss then. The second-year building is over there,” I said, pointing toward the east wing.
“Thanks,” he said with a slight smile.
We parted ways.
A couple of classes passed without much happening. I sat through them half-listening, still stuck in my own head, when my phone buzzed. It was a message from Iroha.
[Sorry, Yuuta. Won’t be coming to uni today. Got a few things to handle.]
I stared at her text for a moment, then pocketed the phone. Guess I’d be on my own today too.
Then I remembered—Hayami-sensei’s PC.
I pulled out my phone again, ready to text her… only to realize I didn’t have her number.
Right. No contact info. No way to reach her directly.
Maybe she was in the faculty room after classes
The faculty room was on the other end of the campus, just past the second-year building. I figured I’d drop by and see if Hayami-sensei was around after her lectures
As I walked through the courtyard, I noticed something… off.
Just by the edge of the second-year building, half-concealed behind one of the wide, concrete columns near the old notice board, someone was crouched down. At first, I thought it was just a student catching a break or tying their shoelaces.
But then I recognized the hair.
White.
It was Kaito.
He hadn’t noticed me. His shoulders were trembling slightly, head bowed, both arms resting on his knees. I slowed my steps.
He was crying.
Or at least, doing a damn good job trying not to.
I stood there, unsure of whether I should call out to him or keep walking.
What the happened?

Really sorry to hear about your accident, and I hope you are now on the mend. Thoughts and prayers go out for your recovery.
Wasn’t expecting this – a new plot thread. Seems like Kaito is a good guy, though. Curious how this plays out with the long term plot. Maybe he turns out to be the best buddy / wingman type character? Dating myself, could see him being like a Niimai-kun from Video Girl Ai
But you are going to keep us hanging forever on this Haruka thing. aren’t you? 😨
Damn, sorry to hear about your accident. Here’s hoping the ribs and the knee heal fine.

Also, damn, 1.5 days without Haruka looking at her phone? One has to wonder how she has managed that … looking towards her finally checking her messages.
Also, Iroha’s fun. Hopefully the guy ends up with her eventually.
Given the title, I think Iroha has a 0% chance, unless this turns harem.
Yeah I don’t understand how a college girl could possibly not use her phone for that long or use her phone but not see his message. I hope this doesn’t get dragged out too much longer where she only sees it after her trip… maybe she’ll see it when she’s boarded the plane or something?
I’m not sure why the MC didn’t block her after sending the breakup message too. It’s not like she could ever change his mind now. At most, he should send her a message stating that her stuff that was left at his place was shipped out to her place. Then there’s zero reason to be reachable and he can walk away cleanly with his dignity intact.
We had this debate before – as stated earlier, she’s off to the island with the new boy toy. May not have reception. I speculated she may not even respond for the week.
Your conclusion doesn’t make sense with the timeline though. He sent that message in the morning right about the same time as she would have woken up in the bed of the disappointing senpai. The trip departure was the following day after that.
So she had a full day of packing, logistics, and messaging with her friends who are also going on this trip. It’s impossible for her to not be using her phone during that time.
The only thing that makes sense to me is that the actual message from him got pushed off her home screen by other stuff that came later and then when she checked her messages she saw the little “1” next to her boyfriend’s name and made a conscious decision to ignore it so she’s not “held back” from her experiment or something.
Not that it matters anymore since it’s already over. She can experience being thoroughly used as the group’s bicycle for a week. She’s a single gal now after all, she just doesn’t know it yet.
Welcome back, sorry to hear you’re enduring such a difficult accident!
I’m looking forward to how this story progresses and all but please don’t push yourself too hard 🙏
