- Chapter 26: Let's Cuddle.
Let’s Cuddle.
“37.5 degrees.”
Looking at the numbers displayed on the thermometer that morning, Mii slumped back onto the bed with a listless groan.
“A slight fever.”
“That’s what happens when you sleep without any clothes on.”
“My head hurts a little.”
“You had a shift today, didn’t you?”
“I’m skipping. I’ll call Vanilla-san.”
Using my phone, she called Apollinaire. After giving a few apologetic nods to the receiver, she rested her head back against the pillow.
“She said I can take off until the day after tomorrow. I feel bad for causing trouble.”
“Don’t push yourself. Besides, you’ve been working too much anyway.”
“It’s fine. I enjoy it.”
Still lying there without any underwear on, she pulled my hoodie over her shoulders.
“I might actually be surprisingly suited for this kind of thing.”
“Customer service?”
“Maybe it’s my dad’s blood. Talking to strangers and having them eat something I made… it’s fun.”
“That’s a good thing.”
“Saki-nii, are you off today by any chance?”
“Yeah. Off-duty.”
“Then let’s cuddle at home.”
“No thanks. I don’t want to catch your cold.”
“Don’t be like that. Come on, look…”
She lifted the edge of the duvet, beckoning me to join her. She looked far too pleased with herself for someone with a fever.
“Ah.”
Suddenly, her face contorted.
“Crap.”
“What is it?”
“I think it’s here. That.”
“Hm?”
“You know, that. Sorry, can you grab the thing in my bag?”
“This?”
“Not that one. The other one.”
“I’m tossing it.”
“Thanks.”
She scrambled out of bed and dashed into the bathroom. When she emerged a short while later, she looked up at me with an apologetic expression.
“Sorry. I got a bit of a stain on my pants.”
“It’s fine. I was going to do the laundry anyway.”
She let out a long, heavy sigh.
“I’m sorry. I can’t have sex with you today, Saki-nii.”
“I wasn’t planning on it in the first place.”
“This is the absolute worst. I don’t even understand why this has to happen; it makes no sense. Don’t men have stuff like this?”
“Stuff like what?”
“A nonsensical thing that attacks you periodically.”
“Not really.”
“I’m so jealous.”
She stared up at the ceiling, speaking with a weary air.
“Once my cold is better, let’s go on a date tomorrow.”
“Sure. If it’s just a date.”
“Oh, so a date is okay?”
“People go on dates even if they aren’t lovers, don’t they?”
“Do they? Have you done that too, Saki-nii? Gone on a date with someone who wasn’t your girlfriend?”
“I haven’t, but…”
“Oh. That’s a relief.”
She smiled and beckoned me over once more.
“Hey. Sleep with me.”
“We just woke up.”
“It’s not like you have anything better to do. Don’t worry, I won’t do anything.”
“Usually, that’s my line.”
Since I truly didn’t have much to do, I crawled into the bed. The moment I did, she clung to me tightly.
“Saki-nii’s body is so nice and cool. It feels good.”
“You can really sleep in that state?”
“I can, I can. I’ll be out like a light.”
“Now that I think about it, we used to sleep like this a lot back in the day, too.”
“We did, we did. I used to sleep in your room all the time, didn’t I?”
“Fast asleep until evening. You’d come all the way to my house just to nap. I really don’t know what you were thinking.”
“Your bed just feels safe, Saki-nii.”
She rubbed her face against my sleepwear as she spoke.
“Because it’s full of scents I recognize.”
Through the fabric of my sweats, her body felt warmer than usual, likely due to the fever. Occasionally, the slight protrusions of her breasts brushed against my back.
Mii spoke in a low whisper.
“Hey.”
“What?”
“Are you turned on?”
“I’m not.”
“Want me to use my mouth? Like the other day?”
“I told you I’m not doing anything. What if your cold gets worse? You don’t even have an insurance card.”
“Oh, right. Sorry, sorry.”
“I’ll make you some porridge later. Just stay asleep.”
“Thank you.”
She slowly lowered her eyelids.
“You really are kind, Saki-nii.”
Before long, her breathing became steady and rhythmic as she drifted into a peaceful slumber.
The sunlight streaming through the window illuminated Mii’s face. Come to think of it, this might have been the first time since coming to Tokyo that I’d seen her looking so serene in her sleep.
