Chapter 16: Memories and here on out ①
“Alright, then Kosuke, here~ let’s take a look,”
Ren opened the box and began to take out its contents.
“Is this an album?”
“Yeah, look, these are pictures from when we first met.”
Ren pointed to a photo showing them as kids.
“Kosuke, you have such a stiff smile over here… fufu~.”
“Yeah, even though I am smiling, It looks so stiff. I wonder why?”
“Fufu, don’t you remember? You were nervous because it was the first time we took a picture together.”
“Ah… I see.”
They continued to look through various photos, including school event pictures and family vacation photos, until they came across one.
“So Nostalgic, this is the time from your birthday, isn’t it? I remember this one clearly… Look from this~.”
Kosuke pointed to a teddy bear plushie in the photo.
“I saved up my all my allowance till that day just to give you that teddy bear as a present. You were so happy…”
But as Kousuke spoke, Ren on the other hand wore a somewhat sad expression for some reason.
“Yeah, I was really happy. I used to sleep together with it every night. But… I’m sorry, that bear is not with me anymore…”
“Oh, well, it’s been many years after that, so it’s understandable. Don’t worry about it.”
“No, you don’t understand. I… —I ended up throwing it away.”
“Eh?”
“That’s right, I threw it away! Not just the bear, but everything — everything that was related to you! …”
“—Ah… I … I see.”
Kosuke couldn’t hide his shock upon hearing Ren’s words. While it’s natural for things to get old and be discarded, but the implication behind her, Ren’s words was that, she wanted to discard all the memories she had with him.
In other words, for his elder sister, Ren, the memories she shared with him was something she didn’t want to remember.
Or so was what Kousuke felt.
“Well, it can’t be helped, ahahaha…”
Kosuke forced a smile.
“…Kosuke.”
“…But… then why come to see me now?”
“It was just a coincidence.”
Ren tried to evade the question, but Kosuke wasn’t convinced.
“There’s no way it was a coincidence. —It’s strange to think that way. It’s not normal for someone to attend the same high school and coincidentally move in next door.”
“…”
“Nee-san.”
After some thought, Ren started speaking.
“Yeah, it is as you guessed Kosuke, not everything was a coincidence. I chose to come to this high school because it had the highest chance of meeting you. But, it was a coincidence that we became neighbours, truthfully, I had no idea where you lived, Moreso, over here. — I did thought that, if I moved here in this academy, I would get closer to you. But, I never expected to be so close to get next door to you, though.”
“…So why go to such lengths just to see me? Is it about money after all?”
“No, it’s not! —I simply wanted to see you!”
Ren vehemently denied.
“But then why now?”
“That’s… well, —it’s a long story. Okay, I’ll tell you everything. Everything, why now, and my past which made me.”
Ren looked into Kousuke’s eyes with a determined look.
“I understand. Please tell me about it, Ren.”
Kosuke straightened up to listen, and Ren began her story.
