v3 Chapter 11: A warning from a childhood friend
“Is Ren Nishimiya your real elder sister?”
“What are you talking about? Of course, she’s my elder sister.”
“Kousuke, can you calmly explain why you thought she was your long lost elder sister?”
Risako spoke gently.
“Well, it’s because… Ren-nee is really my elder sister.”
“Anyone say that, just like that.”
“And she knew memories that nobody else should know, moreover the dishes she cooked were all just like the flavors I remembered from when I was little.”
“Memories and dishes could have been told to her by your real elder sister someday.”
“Guh! But then, what about that smile?!”
“If you’re constantly being conditioned, just seeing a smile like that can make you think it in that way.”
Kousuke tried to desperately explain, but Risako rebutted each point he would make.
Which finally led to Kousuke losing his cool and become frustrated.
“What are you trying to say?! That I’m being deceived!?”
“Sigh… calm down. That’s a possibility too.”
Risako tried to calm him.
“Both you and oneechan are too quick to believe.”
“I understand your feelings, Kousuke, but think about it calmly.”
Kousuke sat down on a nearby bench to calm himself.
“Are you feeling better now, Kousuke?”
“Yeah… I guess.”
As he answered, he touched his neck. Seeing him do this, Risako felt a little awkward.
“Ah, sorry, it did hurt, eh? Oh, uwaa, it’s all red. Just wait a moment.”
Risako took out a handkerchief, dampen it with her breath, but on trying to put it on Kousuke’s neck, she got stopped, and instead urged to continue the conversation.
“It’s okay, let’s continue talking.”
“Really? Okay, let’s start from the beginning and rethink this. First, let’s discuss on how you became close with Ren-san.”
“Ah, okay, so first…”
Kousuke began telling Risako about when he first met Ren, from when she moved in next door, to eating meals together, and their current relationship.
After hearing this, Risako exclaimed, “Haa~h… Are you an idiot?”
She held her head in disbelief.
“Kousuke… I thought you were all right in your head, just some screws lose here and there. … But I never thought you to be missing all screws required for sensing incoming crises.”
Risako sighed heavily.
“You don’t have to go that far…”
“Listen, any normal person wouldn’t let someone who just moved in next door, into their room!!”
“But, she’s that Ren-senpai, and she’s famous at school, so…”
“Just because she’s famous doesn’t mean you will readily let her in! Did you ever talk to her personally?”
“No, just till greetings?”
“Listen now!! Ugh, forget it, my head’s starting to hurt.”
Risako held her head.
“Are you okay?”
“Whose fault do you think it is?!… Haa… Anyway, Kousuke! Promise me!!”
Risako pointed her finger sharply.
“From now on, you won’t bring unknown people into your house recklessly. And even if you want to, you will think about it first, got it?”
“Ah… okay.”
Feeling pressured, Kousuke responded.
“Haa… just as oneechan said. Kousuke, you’re not ready to live alone yet.”
*Clap clap*
Risako clapped her hands.
“Anyway, let me tell you what I thought after hearing what you said.”
“Ah, okay.”
Kousuke awkwardly sat in a seiza on the bench.
“Why seiza? Well, whatever. My impression after hearing your story is … it’s too suspicious.”
“To that degree?”
“Yes, to that degree. It’s strange, don’t you think? Your long-lost elder sister happens to move to the same school and then, even lives next door to you.”
Thinking about it calmly, it does seem odd.
“And why did Ren-san make contact after you became a high school student?”
“Well, because she didn’t know where I was, right? Also, because I moved out as well.”
“Listen Kousuke, it’s easy to find out. Because you were taken in by your grandfather, moreover, he also owns a shop. By that alone, she could have known where you were, and if she didn’t want to meet the Master, she could have just checked the school district and get information till the point where you went for your middle school.”
“So… you’re saying that if she wanted to make contact, she could have done it easily anytime. So why did she wait a whole year and now decided to contact you? … Thinking that way, it does feel a little suspicious?”
Listening to Risako’s words, Kousuke realized how strange it all was. Why did Ren-nee approach him?
“Say, Risako, then why do you think Ren-nee made contact to me?”
“That…I don’t know. Maybe she really just wanted to see you, or…”
“Or?”
After hesitating for a moment, Risako seemed to make up her mind and began speaking.
“…Or maybe she’s after your inheritance, Kousuke.”
