- Chapter 31 - Even Though She is My Childhood Friend, I Can’t Let it End Like This
Even Though She is My Childhood Friend, I Can’t Let it End Like This
“You’re late, Toshi-kun. Where have you been?”
She—Tsukimiya Airi, rubs her half-open eyes with the back of her hand while letting out a big yawn.
She is sitting on the bed, staring intently into my eyes.
“Why are you here—”
My heart is racing.
Did I forget to lock the door?
No, I clearly remember locking it. Then how did she get in?
I can hear my heart pounding.
I can feel my mouth going dry.
“Senpai? I heard some voices…”
Rinka, who had been waiting outside the entrance, comes over to me.
The moment she sees my childhood friend, she’s stunned.
I instinctively hide Rinka behind my back.
My childhood friend is a girl. Physically, I have the advantage, but since she trespassed into my house, I can’t let my guard down.
As soon as my childhood friend sees Rinka, she looks down.
“Isn’t that enough revenge by now…?”
“What are you talking about?”
My childhood friend leans against the wall.
She sits upright, hiding her mouth with her knees.
“I saw the trash can.”
“Huh?”
“It’s really painful…I was actually thinking about it, you know? When should we kiss, when should we have sex…I had everything planned in my mind. I wanted it to be on a special day, something that would become a lifelong memory for me and Toshi-kun.”
My childhood friend muttered so.
As Rinka and I stand there frozen, my childhood friend continues.
“But because of that girl…everything is ruined.”
“W-What are you talking about? You’re shifting the blame here. It’s all because Tsukimiya-senpai cheated—”
“Shut up. I didn’t cheat on Toshi-kun.”
“Are you kidding me…?”
Rinka seems shaken. She is grabbing my back rightly.
“Because I didn’t give him my feelings, I don’t intend to give him my heart as well. I only gave him my body.”
“That’s not the issue here.”
“Yeah, you’re right. I’m sorry, Toshi-kun. I was wrong…yeah, I understand now. It was really, really painful for me too…just thinking about what happened between you and Rin-chan made me want to throw up, and to be honest, I even thought about dying. You felt the same way as I do, right? I’m sorry…I really am, but I think we can start over now. Now that we’ve both experienced the same pain, we can start over, right?”
“There is no way we can start over…”
I’m stunned right now.
I really don’t understand what she’s talking about.
“Why not? Toshi-kun, you dated that girl to get back at me, right? Otherwise, there’s no way you’d be Rin-chan’s boyfriend. That’s enough, isn’t it?”
“I’m not dating Rinka to get back at you!”
The beginning of our relationship might have been twisted, but after I accepted Rinka’s suggestion to be my affair partner, our relationship changed.
But I didn’t start dating Rinka to get back at my childhood friend or my former best friend.
In fact, I no longer want to be involved with them at all.
“…I see. Toshi-kun, you really are being deceived by that girl, aren’t you?”
“Huh?”
“There’s no way Toshi-kun would say something so cruel and terrible to me. That girl must have said something weird to you…Toshi-kun, you’ve changed…”
My childhood friend gets up from the bed and glances at Rinka sharply who is standing behind me.
“Rin-chan. Give me back my Toshi-kun. You must be satisfied by now, right? Toshi-kun is too good for you. You don’t deserve him at all.”
“…at least, I don’t want to hear that from you, Tsukimiya-senpai.”
“I see. Well, that makes sense. Even if it’s for Toshi-kun’s revenge, you can’t let go of this relationship, right?”
“Didn’t you hear what Senpai said? He is not dating me to get back at you.”
Rinka retorts so without hesitation.
My childhood friend smiles and sits down on the bed again.
“I realized.”
“You realized?”
“Yeah. I was wondering why I didn’t realize that Toshi-kun likes me until I was in my second year of high school. You’ve had feelings for me since middle school, right?”
To be precise, I’ve had feelings for my childhood friend since fifth grade.
But I think it was when I entered middle school that I truly realized I liked her.
As I remain silent, my childhood friend lets out a small laugh.
Perhaps, she is taking that as an affirmation.
“If you think about it logically, I should have realized it much sooner. You’re so honest and easy to understand, Toshi-kun.”
“…what are you trying to say?”
“In other words, I think someone was plotting something unnecessary.”
“Huh?”
“For example, maybe Rin-chan was trying to prevent you and me from getting together under the guise of giving you romantic advice…?”
Rinka’s shoulders jump slightly at my childhood friend’s words.
I can see the agitation in Rinka’s eyes.
“I-I would never do…something like that…”
“Rin-chan would definitely do it. Because Rin-chan has a really bad personality.”
“I-I don’t want to hear that from you!”
“Don’t get so angry just because I hit the nail on the head. It’s bad for your beauty.”
My childhood friend places her index finger on her chin and smirks.
“If you hadn’t done that, maybe Toshi-kun and I could have started dating much earlier. We could have been together before I gave my body to someone else, right?”
“……”
“It’s all that girl’s fault, she tore us apart. Plus, I know that Toshi-kun and Rin-chan often met up to talk on the bench park. When I saw that, I misunderstood the situation—and with everything going on with my parent’s divorce, I got depressed and did something reckless…it’s all Rin-chan’s fault. If it weren’t for Rin-chan, I would still be happy with Toshi-kun now…”
My childhood friend keeps talking nonchalantly.
“—you should shut up already.”
Seeing her like that, I say so in a calm tone.
