My Adorable Daughter Can't Be A Villainess - Chapter 4 - Their past
An Arcane is the awakened manifestation of a person’s inner nature, instinct, and dormant potential.
When a human awakens, their Arcane takes the shape of a glowing pattern, granting abilities that grow through three distinct tiers.
An Arcane is not just power — it is the user’s truest self given form.
Based on potential and limitations, the Arcanes are divided into four classes:
Beast, Elemental, Arcanum, and Primordial.
There are three known tiers in each class that grant more abilities to the user.
Like the first tier in the Beast class allows the host to strengthen their body, amplifying basic physical stats by a wide margin when they use their Arcane.
And in the second tier, they can manifest their beast traits like claws, talons—based on their Arcane beast.
Each class and tier also defines the amount of mana a person would possess.
A second-tier Beast Arcane user would have a similar mana reserve to a first-tier Elemental Arcane user.
Those Saints who were healing Chloe inside the altar room must have an Elemental awakening that has affinity with healing. Or maybe a Beast like a Koi fish also allows a user to heal others, but not to the degree where they can completely cleanse one’s body.
Eric Blackwood, son of Count Blackwood, was quite famous in the nation and also in the academy—not only because of his intelligence but also because he had awakened an Arcanum Arcane.
It was said that one in one million awakens an Arcanum Arcane.
Arcanum allows a person to freely manipulate mana to craft spells using several elements. They have free rein over the very essence of magic, and that gives them a large spectrum of resources.
During his academy days, Eric was hailed as a prodigy, given that he had awakened a rare Arcane and also came from a scholarly family.
Not only did he always gain a high score in written exams but in physical assessments too. He never allowed others to outshine him… well, with the sole exception of a girl.
A certain girl who had awakened a Beast Arcane and also had a weak background, given that she was the bastard child of a Baron.
And yet, she never allowed those factors to stop her.
The only person who always pushed Eric to do better, to improve himself with time, was that single person.
Chloe Markren.
Initially, they had a very thorny relationship—always bickering, always challenging each other.
Eric found the girl annoying for her competitive nature and pretended he never considered her as his equal. But it was a fact that Eric always felt threatened because of her, and truth be told, that helped him improve in various fields.
During their academy days, Eric and Chloe were often seen together, not only because they were placed in several projects together but also because they loved to spar against each other.
The competitiveness bloomed into something entirely else. Slowly, Eric began to see the girl in a different light.
Whenever he couldn’t meet her, he would feel empty… as if something was missing.
Chloe also began to change. She started to focus on her appearance whenever she came to meet him. She started to wait for him in the morning before class, and they started to share at least one meal of the day.
Slowly, the relationship of rivals started to shift into something more profound… more beautiful.
And on the day of graduation, when Eric heard that her marriage partner had been decided… he took an impulsive step which he greatly regretted later.
That night… he crossed a line with Chloe which made him feel shameful, unbecoming of a man.
And because of that shame, he left her. He didn’t visit the academy again and shifted to another continent to shift his focus and pursue his dream of becoming a researcher.
Over time, he believed Chloe must have forgotten that night as well, and moved on.
….
[Eric’s POV:]
But, “Eric was so freakin’ wrong.” I clutched my head in frustration.
How… unmanly was that… to assume everything on his own and abandon that woman who trusted you?
As I sat outside the altar room, memories of this body were coming back to me, and the more I thought, the more anger I felt towards this guy.
From what I remember, it was mentioned in the novel that Chloe was abandoned by her family after it was discovered she was pregnant.
Apparently, Chloe’s stepmother had been searching for a reason to throw her out of the academy.
Chloe had begged her father to let her study in the academy—one chance to prove herself.
As such, when her father heard that she got pregnant with a child whose father was missing, he was enraged and threw her away.
Chloe had to work several jobs, even during her pregnancy, to support her and the child’s life.
Just thinking about it… it makes my heart ache in agony.
How much she must have suffered… I can’t even bring myself to think about it.
Chloe actually never wanted our daughter, Charlotte to ever find out about her past but she does through a diary. And when she learns everything her mother has suffered from, she naturally develops hatred towards the man who had made her good going life a living hell.
And I can’t blame her. Anyone would hate such a man like him…like me.
Heaving a sigh, I leaned back against the chair. No, I can’t let it happen. Not because I was scared of my death but because I don’t want them to suffer anymore.
“Sir Blackwood.” Suddenly, someone called out from the left.
I got up, my brows drawn closer, “Is she okay?”
The man was startled but he soon nodded and informed me, “Yes, and she wishes to see you.”
