My Adorable Daughter Can't Be A Villainess - Chapter 18 - Reputation
Three days had passed. These past few days, all Eric did was train his magic control and practice using his Arcane.
He didn’t have any urgent work that needed his attention, since he would be resuming his job as a professor tomorrow. And being surrounded by people who knew him would surely raise suspicions if he didn’t behave the way he should.
On top of that, Eric read through all his recent research papers so he’d have something to focus on and avoid meeting people.
Now, it was the last day of staying at home. That was why he was thinking of a way to spend some time with Chloe and Charlotte.
Yes, for the last three days, all he’d done was see them for a few minutes or spend time with them eating at the dining table.
That was all.
It was wholesome, and father and daughter were getting along well. Still, Eric wanted to make the most of the free time he had.
That was why he stood outside their room door, hesitating.
The servants had returned, so a few maids were already nearby, asking if he needed something.
‘You can do this…’ Hyping himself up, Eric finally knocked twice on the door.
There was a brief pause before it opened, revealing a smiling Charlotte.
“Ah, Uncle Eric.” She instantly stepped aside to let him in.
Eric quietly entered and looked at Chloe. She sat at the tea table with several books spread out in front of her. It looked like she was teaching Charlotte.
Pausing, he said, “I was thinking of having lunch outside. Would you two like to come?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
Two silver heads, two different reactions.
Charlotte turned to her mother, her innocent violet eyes blinking in silent pleading, while Chloe returned the look with a sharp glare.
“Didn’t you say you wanted to finish this lesson today?” Chloe asked.
Charlotte whined, “But Mom… the sun is so warm today. Shouldn’t we go out and explore a little?”
Eric pressed on, “If it’s an important lesson, she can understand it later. And it’s good for her body to get some sunlight.”
Chloe turned to Eric with raised brows. “Oh, and did the medic say that?”
Eric stiffened, then nodded. “Yes.”
Chloe held his gaze, searching his face for the truth.
Eric didn’t look away. He wasn’t a good liar, but his desire to spend time with his family helped him push through.
Chloe finally let out a sigh. “You’ll finish this chapter after we return.”
“Yay! I love you, Mom!” Charlotte jumped up to hug her, rubbing her cheek against Chloe’s affectionately.
Chloe groaned, then patted Charlotte’s back and said, “Go and freshen up.”
Charlotte nodded, gave Eric a bright smile, and sprinted toward the bathroom, leaving the two adults alone.
Eric stood there quietly, feeling a little awkward.
Chloe started arranging the books, not even bothering to ask him to sit.
Eric hadn’t expected anything else. He stayed because he wanted to tell her something.
“I… arranged a few dresses for Charlotte, and for you too. Should I have them sent over?”
Chloe paused. Then, after a moment, she said, “You don’t need to ask me before doing something for Charlotte…” Turning to look at him over her shoulder, she added, “…I’m just a visiting guest, so don’t bother about me.”
Eric looked down before replying, “We’re going outside together, and you don’t have a decent dress.”
Chloe paused, then frowned. “So it’s about your reputation, huh?”
Eric sighed. “If that’s what it takes for you to accept them, then yes. That’s the reason.”
Chloe didn’t say anything for a few moments.
Eric realized he should leave before her mood got worse.
When he stepped out, Maylie was standing there with several maids behind her, each holding the dresses he’d prepared.
Eric nodded, and Maylie guided the maids into the room.
As they went in, Maylie asked, “Should I prepare the lunch basket, Young Master?”
Eric nodded and muttered, “Make sure no one disturbs us.”
Maylie bowed, and Eric headed down to the first floor, ready to change his clothes and enjoy the date to the fullest.
….
Charlotte was excited, and she had every reason to be.
Ever since she came here, she had been living a completely different life.
She wasn’t working all day anymore, and she didn’t have to use a double identity either. She was learning new things, and her mother was healthy now. Could anything be better?
And today, they were going on a picnic.
“Seriously, Uncle Eric is the best.”
She liked this man who had changed her life more and more.
Not only was he taking care of her mother, but he was also cool and strong.
He was a famous magician, a senior professor at the Academy, and he fought so well.
‘I really want to be like him.’
Charlotte had found a second mentor in Eric.
“Here, wear this.” When Charlotte stepped out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around her body, her mother lifted a white dress toward her.
Charlotte was surprised. “Waah… it’s so beautiful.” She hugged the dress to her chest. “Did my favorite Uncle Eric give this?”
Chloe narrowed her eyes, though her lips curved into a smile. “Look at you, singing your uncle’s name like that.”
Charlotte giggled, hugged her mother, and said, “I’m so happy right now, Mom. It’s all thanks to you and Uncle Eric. You two are the best.”
Hearing that, Chloe’s expression shifted slightly.
Her heart felt warm, but her mind resisted the thought.
She was happy that her daughter was accepting Eric’s presence in her life… but what if Charlotte chose him over her?
What if, after getting custody of Charlotte, Eric married someone else?
What would Chloe do?
