- Chapter 16: What Exactly is the Enemy of My Enemy?
It seems that Ran became fascinated with being a magical girl right after she started her second life with a diet made by her mother.
Unable to eat the same foods as normal people and often vomiting at the family dinner table, she felt deeply grateful to her younger sister, who always followed her around, calling her ‘big sister, big sister.’ Therefore, she decided to pay extra attention to her sister, to the point of being almost annoying.
Ran’s sister, Anzu Ikegaya, who had been continuously feeling sad from being hugged by Naimune, seemed to have developed thoughts after a while. Considering some of her masculine traits, she worries about Ran’s future love life. Wondering if it would be problematic, she showed Ran magical girl anime, where girly girls take center stage.
And so, Ran was thoroughly captivated by a series where fluttery and magical girls triumph in grand finales despite being a bit lily-lily.
“So, Ran, a former boy who might have been a bit of an otaku in his past life, got hooked on magical girl anime and ended up causing trouble in the world of magic due to his intense desire to assimilate?”
“Yeah, that’s right, Bakasane-chan! My sister is a bit… weird…”
“Well, from my perspective, Ran is quite unique, but that’s not necessarily bad. It’s quite fun.”
“Bakasane-chan, it’s sad when your family is ‘interesting’…”
“What! I’m often told I’m interesting, but what does that mean for my mom…”
“Yeah, Yui-san might feel the same disappointment…”
“Gosh, I see!”
I learned this new fact from a younger girl — though she’s already a bit more mature than Bakasane — and felt my face burning.
So, being ‘interesting’ is good because it’s from an outsider’s perspective. Ran, Misaki, and others are not embarrassed even as a family, but being the subject of constant retorts every day might be tiring.
Thinking about it, my mom’s retort skills must have always been incredible. After all, her punch can penetrate even Bakasane-chan’s super durability, so it makes sense.
I nodded, thinking it was good that she was my mom. Anzu, watching my twin tails waving as I nodded, seemed to have a somewhat exasperated look in her eyes.
“Bakasane-chan is just Bakasane-chan, huh…”
“Huh? Of course, I’m me, right?”
“I guess so…”
As I tilted my head in confusion, Anzu seemed to understand it. So, Bakasane-chan is Bakasane-chan. That’s how it was decided.
This is just after leaving Ran Ikegaya’s room, where we listened to all the magical stories from Ran and Gordric. Anzu, who had been listening behind the door and waiting, said she had something to discuss.
For some reason, Misaki was kicked out because of her large breasts, and it was just petite me and Anzu talking leisurely in a nearby cafe.
While I quickly finished a super delicious milkshake and considered ordering another, I watched Anzu, with her peculiar taste, slowly drinking black coffee. Resigning myself to water, I started chewing on the hard ice, thinking it was tough when Anzu began talking.
“I’m sorry. My sister dragged you into such a foolish situation…”
“No need to apologize. But, it seems your family knew everything, huh…”
“Well, yeah. When you start seeing someone with a different hair color and outfit sneaking out of the front door… you do some research… and then get thoroughly dismayed…”
“…Tough luck there.”
With what seemed like side tails sprouting from the top of her head, Anzu knew all along that her sister was getting wrapped up in some strange situation.
It appears the entire Ikegaya family was watching Ran’s magical girl antics with bemused detachment.
Until now, they were relieved by her easy-going attitude. But with her getting beaten up like never before, they decided it was a serious matter and spilled everything to me, now involved in the situation.
Currently, Mr. and Mrs. Ikegaya are probably interrogating Ran and Gordric. Naturally, if your bloodied family member nearly dies, everyone gets serious.
They have a great family bond. I thought, feeling a bit competitive, then remembered I forgot to call home to say I’d be late.
I candidly mentioned it.
“Speaking of which, I forgot to call home…”
“Oh, it’s fine, Bakasane-chan. Yui-san probably already got a message from your mom saying it’s okay.”
“Hmm… does that mean my mom already knows everything?”
“Yeah.”
“So, my mom knows and believes that my friend has been playing magical girl and causing trouble in various places?”
“Yeah. Yui-san, being Bakasane-chan’s mom, is quite wonderful herself.”
“Wow.”
Like the child in front of me, swallowing the bitterness with a smile, I was taken aback.
My mom always seemed to hide various things from me but to think she’d fully believe and understand such an outrageous situation just from hearing about it.
Indeed, she’s quite the adventurer. Probably could even defeat a bear with her bare hands. Terrifying.
As I shivered at the thought, Anzu continued.
“Hey… Bakasane-chan, what do you want to do?”
“Huh? What do I want to do? Regardless of Ran’s magical girl play, if bad guys show up, I plan to beat them up.”
“I heard that Bakasane-chan usually falls asleep at 9 pm. But those guys seem to do a lot of bad stuff late at night.”
“Is that so… that’s troublesome.”
