- Chapter 0: The Blue Bird of Happiness
There’s a story about the blue bird of happiness. It’s a tale where a poor brother and sister, asked by a fairy, search for the blue bird of happiness.
The siblings travel through the Land of Memories, the Palace of Night, the Garden of Happiness, a cemetery, and the Kingdom of the Future, finding various blue birds. However, each time they cross into another world, the blue bird transforms into something else.
Eventually, they find the blue bird in a birdcage at their home. It’s a fairy tale that suggests happiness is something that exists right near us.
I thought about it. The siblings found true happiness. But that was because they sacrificed many blue birds in their quest to find the real one.
The true message of this fairy tale might be that to grasp real happiness, one must accumulate many misfortunes. Happiness doesn’t come to us from elsewhere.
I too had a blue bird. It was always, always by my side, watching over my happiness.
The moment I found it was trivial. I’m sure if I told someone, they’d ask why something so insignificant mattered.
It was too obvious, and I didn’t notice it. I thought it would always be there, a part of my life, something natural.
So when I became conscious of it, every little thing about it became dear to me, and looking back, I realized I had always been supported by him.
‘Why?’
One day I asked him. He tried to deceive me with a clumsy lie, even though I knew the whole truth. He thought I hadn’t noticed.
This is my story of trying to get the blue bird to look my way. For now, just being by my side is enough, as trying to catch it would only make it flee.
