Chapter 2
Thank Goodness
After a shocking night, the morning arrived. When I woke up, I couldn’t see my sister who was supposed to be sleeping next to me.
Whipping my languid body, I descended the stairs with heavy steps and smelled the aroma. My mother noticed that I had woken up and called out to me.
“Ara, Kousuke, you finally woke up. Go wash your face quickly. Your breakfast is getting cold.”
“Fuaa~ Morning.”
“Seriously… Saki-chan woke up early to help me prepare breakfast!”
“Hahaha, Mama scolded Kousuke.”
“…..”
“You can’t talk about other people, can you? Haa~ Why are men like this…?”
“…..”
“Dad got scolded too.”
“Whaat?!”
I went to the sink and washed my face to get away from my father who was pissed off. Then, I returned to the dining table and had breakfast when everyone was present.
“”Itadakimasu”””
“Here you go. Bon appétit.”
Breakfast was scrambled eggs and toast, plus a tomato and lettuce salad.
“mogu mogu…..Nn? The eggs are kinda sweeter than usual.” (Tl/n: munch munch sfx)
“Ara, you noticed? Saki made those scrambled eggs.”
“How is it? Nii-san.”
“Hmmm… I like …… mom’s more!”
“You’re an idiot, Kosuke. Of course Saki’s scrambled eggs are better! mogu mogu…… Oh yeah! It tastes even better than usual~Sakii~!”
“Oh, I see. Yours is the usual scrambled egg, full of my love. I’m glad it tastes good.”
“…..”
My mother’s lips twitched even as she smiled. When Mom looked at him, he curled up his back and shrank back, then continued eating breakfast in a hurry.
Saki, as usual, quietly ate as she tried her best to move her small, docile mouth. However, I felt that she was somewhat pissed off.
“Well, sometimes it’s nice to have something sweet.”
As something that was just made for me, I felt like I was going to end up feeling guilty at this rate, so I said a somewhat blatant follow-up.
“…..good.”
With that word, my little sister busily moved her mouth again, continuing to eat breakfast.
After finishing breakfast and brushing our teeth, my sister and I left the house.
Ever since my sister entered elementary school, we always held hands when we went to school. I was a little embarrassed, but even so, I’m worried about leaving my 1st grade sister and walking ahead without her, so I had no choice but to do this for a while.
On the way to school, my sister was a celebrity, so sometimes adults with cameras would approach her, but at times like that, the neighbors who were always watching over her would chase them away.
For better or worse, we always had people’s eyes on us, as people on the street would smile at the sight of a third-grade boy and a first-grade girl holding hands on their way to school.
“Good morning! Kousuke-kun, Saki-chan! Glad to see you two getting along again.”
On the way to school, as we were walking hand in hand without anything to talk about, an old lady who has lived nearby for a long time approached us.
“Morning, Grandma.”
“Good morning, Grandma.”
Now she was my quiet little sister at home, but when she went outside, she smiled sweetly and greeted people amiably out loud. It was just like the old Saki, the noisy, energetic one who cackled at home and outside when she used to play at the park with me.
“Saki-chan! I saw you on TV last night! You were so cute!”
“Thank you very much. I’ll be in a few movies next time, so please watch them.”
“Wow, a movie! You’re getting more and more popular!”
“Thanks to grandma and everyone.”
“Araa, then I’ll do my best to cheer you on!”
“Thank you very much.”
Smiling, conversing, and waving her hands, the little sister continues on her way without stopping. It’s not like we were going to be late, and when she wanted to talk to them, she tugged at me, indicating that I should stop and let her talk to them for a bit.
“…..Saki.”
“? Yes, Nii-san.”
My sister stopped walking ahead of me, dragging me by the hand. Then she turned around her body and waited for my words with a blank stare.
“Aa…..ya, Nothing.”
“Weird Nii-san. Come on, let’s go.”
With that, my sister started walking again. Now she was walking a little backwards, as if she were a little girl being led by the hand.
We arrived at school and I parted ways with Saki. Saki, a first-year student, went to a classroom on the first floor. I headed to a classroom on the second floor.
On the way up the stairs, a friend from the same class called out to me from behind.
“Yanagawa! Morning!”
“Yo, Tanaka.”
“You were holding hands again today~ The Yanagawa siblings are as close as ever~”
“Don’t make fun of me…it’s embarrassing.”
“I don’t care. Your sister is cute, affable, and most importantly, she’s famous. My little brother is already a complete yancha.” (TL/n: Yancha means delinquent, punk, etc.)
“Fights and stuff?”
“Every day. He eats my ice cream, uses my games on his own and other things without my permission.”
“Fuuu…..I see”
“Does it not happen at your place?”
“I’ve never had a fight over that kind of thing.”
I’m not sure if it’s my place to say this, but I was an older brother who liked to take care of her quite a bit. We shared snacks and whatever else we had together, and we just played with simple toys that my little sister could play with.
My sister always followed me and did whatever I told her to do.
Well, the biggest reason why we don’t fight even now is probably because we never need to fight. Now my sister could buy most of the things she wants on her own.
“That’s nice. I wish I had a little sister instead of a brother. She would be cute and not violent.”
“Oh, but there was a little fight yesterday.”
“Hee, even that little sister of yours gets into fights.”
“Just a little argument.” (TL/n: Yea right)
“Fuu….so, how was it, Did you win?”
“What did you mean, Did I win?…..Well, of course I won. How could I, an older brother, lose.”
I wasn’t lying. I never said I had a “fight” in the first place, and therefore there is no win/loss or anything. Thus, I didn’t lose.
“D**n, you made your little sister cry.”
“I didn’t say anything like that! I was just teaching her that I was better than her.”
“Haha, how does your little sister get angry?”
“Eee…..”
It evoked memories that I didn’t really want to recall. I never thought my sister would throw a tantrum like that. Or rather, was she angry…?
“Th-That’s normal. Normal… Hah, haha”
“What’s with you all of a sudden? What do you mean, ‘normal’?”
“Don’t worry about my house! What about Tanaka’s house?”
“Ah, I’ve been learning to use tools lately. I’ll take an umbrella and swing it around.”
“Dangerous….So, what are you going to do?”
“If I hit him, my parents would get mad at me. Lately I’ve been attacking him with spitballs.”
“You’re gonna spit? Unfair.”
“But it’s very effective. And you don’t get hurt.”
“Hmm….”
We entered the classroom with such chit-chat and I took my seat.
After that, I spent the rest of the day at school as usual, having casual conversations with my friends while attending classes, and then headed home while grazing with friends on my way out of the school.
After school, my sister gets into a car parked in front of the school gate and travels to various places for entertainment work.
Occasionally I would see my sister getting into the car and I would feel sorry for her. While girls around my sister’s age were happily leaving school in groups, chatting away, her back was small and lonely as she got into the car alone.
In the evening, my sister came home at the same time as yesterday. As usual, my parents greeted my sister with high spirits, and she simply said, “I’m home.”
“Nii-san, I’m home.”
“Welcome back. Saki”
