Chapter 11 The Demon Lord and the Hero, Another Tale
Having listened to our story, the figure of Kageyo in the form of the Demon Lord exclaimed, “Wow!”
“So, you managed to kick out Sasakura and Tanaka sensei, huh? And you even rescued Hikaru from kidnapping. You guys have been through quite a lot, huh?”
“Yeah, well. Now, what about your side of the story?”
“Um, let’s see… where should I start?”
Swiftly, Isumi in her Hero form chimed in, “Could you just stay quiet for a bit? It takes forever when you start talking.”
“Aww, that’s harsh.”
“That’s why I’m asking you to be quiet.”
And then, she began to speak.
The story of how twin elementary school students were reincarnated into the roles of the Demon Lord and the Hero and embarked on their own adventure.
“To be honest, at first, we had absolutely no idea what was going on. That God, Zekar, hardly explained anything to us.”
They awoke after their reincarnation within a cave, about half a day’s walk from the Demon King’s castle. There was someone who had magically transported the Demon Lord and the Hero to that location.
“Her name is Eleanor, a young sorceress. You’re familiar with her, Hero, right?”
Shirene, in her Isumi form, exclaimed.
“Eleanor!? She’s alive?”
“Of course. There was another one too, a demon boy named Barrier.”
Now it was my turn to exclaim.
“Barrier, he’s also alive?”
The son of the Demon General Sekares, whom I had let escape before the final battle… I see, he managed to survive.
“However, why were these two together?”
“I’m not entirely sure, but it seems that Eleanor found Barrier crying on her way to escape from the Demon King’s castle. She protected him. Then, they became friends, perhaps due to being young kids. Later, when Eleanor thought one of you, the Hero or the Demon Lord – well, us – had used a self-destruct spell, she came back to the Demon King’s castle to check on things. She found both of you, barely clinging to life. But she couldn’t leave you like that, and since Cerberus was lurking around, she used a warp spell to transport you both to a nearby cave.”
Hmmm.
Eleanor certainly is quite the assertive young girl. Listening to the continuation of the story, one might even suspect that she’s not just a child, but someone with the wisdom of an adult who has undergone reincarnation.
“So, we talked about the whole reincarnation thing and various other topics. Initially, it was quite a challenge to get her to believe us, and conversely, we had a hard time wrapping our heads around their situation over there. But still, she taught us a lot.”
“We made up our minds to bring peace to the world.”
The conversation was taking another wild turn.
“Why would you do such a thing?”
“According to Eleanor, for us to return to our original world, cooperation between the demon, human, elf, and dwarf races is essential.”
“And, you know, peace is better than war, after all.”
Quite a childlike perspective indeed.
Given that all four of them were just children, it’s only natural, but still.
“For three years, we worked hard towards achieving peace. We utilized the imposing presence of the Demon King, the charisma of the Hero, and the knowledge from our world.”
“But I think Eleanor worked the hardest. She’s truly a genius. She managed to negotiate not only with the remaining demons but also with the pompous High Priest of the humans. It was quite a feat. Well, beyond our capabilities, for sure.”
Can we really just label it as the brilliance of a genius?
“Oh, I managed it. Although it might be a bit challenging for Kageyo, I suppose.”
“Oh come on, Isumi, it’s impossible for you. You’re good at getting on people’s nerves.”
“What are you saying?”
Well, there were a few tangents and omissions along the way, but all in all, with the help of Eleanor and the efforts of individuals from each race who yearned for peace, three years have passed, and it seems like that world has become relatively peaceful now.
…Huh?
“Three years!?”
In that world, a year is comprised of 300 days. While it’s indeed slightly shorter than our world, still, isn’t the flow of time becoming a bit odd?
“Well, uh, even we aren’t entirely sure about that.”
“Eleanor mentioned that the teleportation gates are unstable, so the timeline might shift a bit,” she explained.
These teleportation gates seem to refer to those cracks that appeared in that space.
“This time, we were transported to the locations where our original bodies exist.”
“We already knew that Hero-san and Demon Lord-san were inhabiting our bodies, thanks to what the god told us,” she added.
That Zekar guy. He didn’t bother informing us about the whole switcheroo situation.
“Wait a minute. Following that logic, why would Cerberus come to this world?”
I initially thought it might have been one of Zekar’s pranks, but it seems quite different.
“Well, uh, you see…”
“Come on, tell us.”
“Uh, it seems like I messed up the experiment a little. Oopsie-daisy.”
Hey, wait a second!
“Oh no, you see, opening the teleportation gates requires a powerful magical creature,”
“We thought Cerberus might be a good fit for that,”
“But during the experimental phase, the gate unexpectedly opened normally,”
“And Cerberus just went right through the gate,”
“Oh boy, talk about a panic!”
Hey, wait a second!
“Although Eleanor had said it was too early for the experiment,”
“This half-mad elf sorcerer and homesick Kageyo forced the experiment anyway,”
“Oh come on, both you and Eleanor eventually agreed,”
“I certainly didn’t! I just sighed and said, ‘Go ahead, do whatever you want,’ that’s all.”
“Well, I think that counts as agreeing.”
“I’m not saying it does!!”
…These two are undeniably quite childish at heart. Like elementary school kids.
Even after three years of being the Demon Lord and the Hero, that essence hasn’t changed.
In the form of Shirene, disguised as Isumi, she muttered softly,
“However, something doesn’t quite add up,”
“What do you mean?”
“Eleanor being alive doesn’t exactly align with Marionear’s story… doesn’t it?”
That’s right.
Amidst all the things happening one after another, I’d lost track, but Eleanor’s supposed death should have ruled out the possibility of her having committed suicide, shouldn’t it?
“Wait, isn’t Marionear-san Eleanor’s mother? What does this mean?”
I proceeded to explain the truth behind the Hikaru’s kidnapping incident, which I had omitted earlier.
“What? No way…”
“Could it really be…?”
Both of them were left speechless.
“When we had been reincarnated for over a year, we visited the village where Eleanor was born. Eleanor felt it was about time to introduce herself to her parents, you see.”
“Then, we found out that Eleanor’s mother had passed away…”
“Her father explained that her mother had died from an illness…”
Clearly, the stories don’t match up.
No, it’s more than that.
I voiced my speculation.
“Meaning, it might have been difficult to convey that her death was a result of Eleanor or the Hero, so they explained it as a natural death.”
It’s inconceivable that Eleanor could have been informed about her mother taking her own life due to Eleanor’s absence.
“Yes, I think you’re right.”
Regarding this matter, all four of us fell into silence for a while, understandably so.
“This, after all, is our fault, isn’t it? Relying too much on Eleanor and failing to inform her that we’re safe.”
“We did try sending letters a few times, though…”
The postal situation in that world was far inferior to that of Japan.
Given the post-war chaos and other factors, the letters might not have reached or, even if they did, it might have been too late.
Regardless, Marionear-san! You’re taking this too far!
From impulsively kidnapping Hikaru to this, your emotions seem to get the best of you.
And Eleanor, come on, you’re a genius; you should think more about your parents.
“I wonder what I should do… Maybe I should apologize to Marionear-san.”
Hmm, while them apologizing might not be entirely wrong…
What should they do…
Just as we were discussing this, a voice came from the entrance to the room.
“Demon Lord and Hero!? What’s going on here?”
Oh no, things have only gotten more complicated now.
“After delivering Hikaru to the Kamiya household, it seems that Kimijima-sensei became curious about us and hurried back.”
After hearing the explanation, Kimijima-sensei muttered.
“I see, so that’s what happened.”
“Um, because of us… well, you know…”
“We’re sorry…”
The twin siblings, now in the forms of the Demon Lord and the Hero, were deeply embarrassed.
But Kimijima-sensei…
“Thank you.”
Huh? Is that the kind of response to be expected?
“That child was alive. You two helped her, didn’t you?”
“Well, actually, we were the ones who were more helped.”
“Even so, you informed us of her safety. That alone is more than enough for me.”
While saying this, she might have a complex mix of emotions inside.
An indescribable silence hung in the air, but the Hero-like form of Isumi changed the subject.
“So, now it’s time for a consultation with the Demon Lord and the Hero. Can we go back to our original forms?”
What’s that supposed to mean?
“The magic we developed with Eleanor-chan and the Elves involves two spells. One is a magic to create gates that traverse between worlds. The other is a magic that swaps minds and memories. Although, to be more accurate, it’s more about returning each soul to its original body.”
“So, in other words, we can each become the Demon Lord and the Hero again, and you two can return to being elementary school students?”
“Yes, exactly. Of course, after that, we can also send the Demon Lord and the Hero back to their world. But of course, if both of you are against it, we’ll need to reconsider…”
I see, so we can go back.
With that said, our decision had already been made.
Sure, we had formed bonds with our parents, Hikaru, Sora, and the others over the past six months.
But if we could go back, we should. Their bonds with Hikaru and the others, after all, were surely much stronger with the true Isumi and Kageyo.
The remaining question was…
In her Hero-like form, Isumi lowered her head to Kimijima-sensei and said, “I’m sorry. It was beyond our imagination that Marionear-san would end up like this. It’s just… the method to restore you to your original state…”
Certainly.
“Even so, if you want to meet Eleanor-chan, we can send you to the original world. But you’ll return as your original selves. I’m truly sorry.”
Kimijima-sensei let out a sigh.
“Afterwards, would it be possible to return to this world?”
“Well, that’s… Eleanor-chan might be able to manage somehow, but it might be difficult.”
After pondering for a moment, Kimijima-sensei came to a conclusion.
…And so, the Demon Lord and the Hero, along with the twin elementary school students, returned to their rightful forms.
Eleanor proved to be exceptionally skilled, flawlessly activating both the mind-swapping magic and the inter-world gate. Once we, in our original forms, stepped through the gate, we were greeted by Eleanor, Barrier, as well as unfamiliar faces of Demons, Humans, Elves, and Dwarves.
They were the precious allies the twins had gathered over the course of three years.
…And then, several months passed.
