Chapter 5 The Demon King and the Hero, Advance to 6th Grade
April arrived, marking nearly half a year since we reincarnated in Japan. When Hikaru returned from elementary school, Isumi and I congratulated her.
“Hikaru, congratulations on starting elementary school.”
“Congratulations indeed. Starting tomorrow, we’ll all go to school together.”
Hikaru smiled brightly.
“Yeah! I’m looking forward to school!”
In this world’s educational system, Isumi and I would attend the same school as Hikaru for only this year. Next year, we would become middle school students, and by the time Hikaru reached middle school, we would have already graduated from high school.
For today’s entrance ceremony, only Hikaru and our parents attended. Isumi and I wanted to join too, but unfortunately, sibling’s attendance at elementary school ceremonies was not allowed.
Daybreak and Akari said with nostalgia,
“Hikaru is already an elementary school student. Time flies.”
“Yes, indeed.”
“And Kageyo and Isumi are sixth graders. Next year, they’ll be in middle school.”
“I still remember when we found out we were having twins. It feels like just yesterday.”
“Absolutely. We’ve been through so much together.”
Our parents looked up at the ceiling, reminiscing.
“I’ll never forget the first time we took Kageyo and Isumi to the beach.”
“Kageyo was hilarious back then, asking, ‘Where’s the whale?'”
“And Isumi calmly responded with, ‘There’s no way there’s a whale at the beach.'”
Hikaru giggled, saying, “Wow, Kageyo-onichan said that? Even I know that.”
“That was when they had just started kindergarten.”
“Oh, I see. So kageyo had a kindergarten era too.”
“Of course.”
The three of them laughed and shared memories. Akari then turned to us and asked,
“Will Kageyo and Isumi remember that time?”
The current me and Isumi have no memories of that incident. It’s only natural since we were reincarnated as Kageyo kamiya and Isumi Kamiya six months ago.
Isumi and I exchanged glances, unsure of how to respond.
“Sorry, I don’t remember.”
“Me neither.”
With just a few words, we returned to our shared room. Even there, we remained silent, as if avoiding a difficult topic. Isumi seemed troubled, and I might have been feeling the same way.
The next morning, Isumi and I walked to school together with Hikaru. After a while, we encountered Sora at the intersection.
Hikaru greeted him before any of us had a chance to say anything.
“Sora-niichan, good morning!”
“Haha, Hikaru-chan has become quite good at greetings.”
“I’ve been able to greet people for a while, you know.”
“Really? I remember when you first moved here, you used to hide behind your Mom.”
I was a bit surprised and couldn’t help but ask, “Is that so?”
“Could it be that because of the accident, you don’t remember that either?”
Sora said with a slightly dark expression. I knew that Sora still felt responsible for that accident. So, I hurriedly denied it, “No, that’s not the case.”
“You’re right. That’s why I was moved a little.”
Of course, I have no memories of playing with Sora right after moving here. Hearing our conversation, Isumi, who was beside us, wore a complex expression similar to yesterday.
Today, we sixth-graders have classes until the fourth period, while Hikaru and her classmates, the first-graders, will go home after the first period.
After the first period ended, I mumbled something.
“Hikaru, do you think you can go home alone?”
Sora, sitting next to us, smiled and replied, “It’s okay, until we reach near our houses, we walk home with the other fourth graders as a group.”
Walking home as a group, huh? I have no memories of that either. As fifth and sixth graders, our classes are longer than those of other grades, so we go home individually.
After that, the second period ended, and the 25-minute break time arrived. At that moment, Isumi came to my desk.
“Kageyo, can I borrow you for a moment?”
“What’s up?”
“Please, just come with me.”
“Well, okay.”
I left the classroom with Isumi.
