Chapter 2 The Demon King and the Hero, Playing Dodgeball and Soccer
Isumi glared at me and grinned.
“Hehehe… Demon King, the time has finally come to settle this.”
That smile somehow seems more fitting for a Demon King than a hero.
Also, saying that while wearing a T-shirt and bloomers doesn’t look very cool.
Before I could even make such a remark, Isumi raised her right hand, holding a ball.
“Here we go!”
Isumi shouted and threw the ball towards me.
It was incredibly fast.
Dodging it would be difficult.
I might be able to avoid it by rolling on the ground, but then, it might hit someone in the outfield.
No choice. Let’s take it head-on, Hero-sama!
I braced myself to catch the ball.
It was a heavy ball, and it felt like it could blow me away, but somehow, I managed to catch it.
Isumi clicked her tongue.
“Not bad, Hero-sama!”
The classmates in the outfield are exasperated, saying, “They’re talking about being the Demon King and the Hero again,” but it’s nothing new.
Over the past few months, Isumi has been calling me the “Demon King,” and the classmates have heard it countless times. Lately, I’ve even started calling her “Hero-sama” in return. At this point, it seems like we’re just twins joking around.
Oh, I forgot to explain. We are currently in PE class. More specifically, it’s dodgeball, and the classmates are divided into red and white teams. As the game progressed, the infield was left with Isumi on the red team and me on the white team. So, it has become a one-on-one showdown between the Hero and the Demon King.
“But this ends now! I’ll defeat you with my strike!!”
“Ha, bring it on, Demon King!”
Now it’s my turn.
I wind up and throw the ball at Isumi.
But she catches it again.
This is turning into quite the match.
However, it’s quite enjoyable, in a way. Returning to our childish selves and playing like this feels great. Well, it’s not exactly playing; it’s a class, after all.
“Hey, throw the ball over here too, Hero-san!”
The outfield from the opposing team calls out to Isumi, but she ignores them and aims at me. Hmm, it seems she has no intention of passing the ball to the outfield.
Now, what should I do? There’s about three minutes left in the game. At this rate, it’ll end in a draw.
“Here I go, Hero-sama!”
I shout and aim for the ground just in front of her.
Or more precisely, I aimed for the ground slightly in front of Isumi.
“Hehehe, you missed, Demon King. With a one-bounce, you can’t get me out, you know.”
Isumi laughs as she tries to pick up the ball.
However, the moment the ball touches the ground, its trajectory changes, bouncing unexpectedly.
“What!?”
The ball, with its altered trajectory, heads towards the outfield of the white team.
It lands right in the chest of Sora, a member of the white team’s outfield.
“Hahaha, you let your guard down, Hero-san! Not noticing the stone on the ground, you still have a long way to go!”
Indeed, my aim was the small stone on the ground.
I made the ball bounce in a way that it would reach our team’s outfield.
Admittedly, it was a stroke of luck that it ended up in Sora’s chest, but regardless, it presented a great opportunity.
“Sora!”
I shout, and Sora nods slightly.
“I’m sorry, Isumi-chan.”
Saying that, Sora throws the ball towards Isumi.
Isumi clicks her tongue in response.
She must have judged that catching it would be difficult in that direction. It was a swift decision to roll across the schoolyard, so as not to soil her gym clothes, to avoid the ball.
However, the ball Sora threw ends up rolling right beside me in the white team’s infield.
I pick it up and throw it towards isumi, who is still on the ground.
Certainly, she couldn’t catch that one, and thus, the white team won the match.
After the match, while I was tidying up the balls, Isumi approached me with a discontented look.
“That was unfair!”
“What do you mean?”
“It was supposed to be a one-on-one battle!”
“Well, in dodgeball, it’s normal for the outfield to cooperate.”
As I said that, Sora, who was nearby, nodded in agreement.
“Yeah, that’s right!”
I gave Sora a pat on the back as a sign of appreciation.
“I trusted Sora to help me.”
“Yep, thanks!”
We exchanged a high-five.
“Next week in soccer, I won’t lose!!”
…or so she said, but the following week during physical education class…
After the teams were assigned, Isumi said with frustration,
“Ugh, I never expected the Hero and the Demon King to team up.”
In soccer, both Isumi and I ended up on the same white team. By the way, Sora was on the red team this time.
At the start, I passed the ball to Isumi, who grinned.
“Demon King! You stay there and watch!”
With that, Isumi dribbled the ball alone, charging towards the goal. Man, she’s really going all out.
As expected, the red team players swarmed around Isumi. There were even some from the soccer club. Even our determined Hero was having a tough time.
I dashed toward the goal.
“Over here!”
I shouted, but let’s face it, with Isumi’s stubborn personality, she wouldn’t pass the ball to me. The opponents also knew Isumi’s style after these past few months, so they ignored me.
However, after confirming my presence, Isumi, though grumbling, said something.
“Fine, can’t be helped. Receive it, Demon King.”
Isumi sent a long-range pass towards me!
Her aim was impressively accurate, and the ball rolled right to my feet.
The only thing standing between me and the goal was Sora, the goalkeeper.
“Sorry, Sora!”
I took a powerful shot!
Sora couldn’t react in time, and I scored the goal.
“Nice pass, Isumi!”
I praised her, and Isumi arrogantly crossed her arms, saying, “Of course.”
“Well, can’t you at least say ‘Nice goal’ in return?”
“Hmph, my pass was just good.”
Well, I can’t deny that, but in any case, we scored one point right at the beginning… or so I thought.
Then, Kimijima-san, our teacher, said to us,
“Well done, nice pass, nice shot. However, no score.”
“What!? Why?”
“Didn’t I explain the offside rule before the class started?”
Ah…
“So, with that, the score remains 0-0 as we resume. Isn’t that right, Hero-san and Demon Lord-san?”
Oh nooo!!
In the end, the soccer match that day concluded with the red team’s victory, thanks to the outstanding performance of the soccer club members.
After the game, we were tidying up as usual.
“Darn it, I fell for such a simple trap! I was a fool to trust someone like the Demon Lord.”
“My bad. More than half of the opponents were soccer club members, so there wasn’t much we could do.”
“As expected of the Demon Lord. You’re always ready with excuses.”
We exchanged banter like that, but then Sora came over and said, “You two have become quite close lately, haven’t you?”
“Well, compared to right after the accident, maybe.”
It’s true that Hero-san’s personality has softened quite a bit.
I thought so, but…
“No, it’s more than that. You two are closer than before the accident.”
Huh, really?
“Before the accident, Isumi-chan seemed like an untouchable honor student, even more so than Maruki-kun.”
Hm, well, Isumi-chan is more of an underachiever in everything except for physical education now.
But you know, it’s true.
Have Hero-san and I really become closer than before the accident?
It’s kind of a strange thought.
Isumi-chan blushes and protests, “I-I don’t remember becoming friends with someone like him.”
“Hahaha, Isumi-chan is blushing! You two look like great friends. Why not get married?”
“T-That’s not funny!”
Aww, she looks genuinely embarrassed.
She’s quite adorable, you know.
But you see…
“Well, in the first place, twins can’t get married.”
I sighed while interjecting, wondering if my comment actually reached their ears.
